I took lessons from him 20 years ago in Boston....Incredible work ethic and one of the most decent guys I have ever met in music...I still use his hand written notes to practice. I'm glad he is where he is today ,he earned it the old fashioned way.Hard work.

As a former drummer/percussionist/jazz drummer/drum corps quad player I can see how Mike Mangini's drumkit layout makes so much sense for best playability. Playing toms left to right is difficult and prone to accidental drumstick clicks and hitting rims. His central system with multiple hi-hats no longer requires crossover-hands playing and eliminates physical, frustrating problems of playing a drumkit.

I still have his custom made imprinted signature Zildjian Super5A (Select Hickory) drumsticks that he used that very night. He just gave them to me. Very cool person to be around. Thank you Mike...

There are a few videos where he is playing 4 different independent time signatures, and then rolls through, and switches the signature on all limbs. So amazing.

Mike strikes me as someone who has finally realised what it's like to play covers in an exact way. The difference in humour between his audition videos and this is so clear, he seems to be a little bitter towards DT telling him to play as they wanted. He taught expression and improvisation at Berklee and I think DT is the first gig where he had to really restrain his fills and play to the page as such. I'm not sure this is his dream gig as he thought, he regrets giving up Berklee and it's kinda obvious that Portnoy left for a similar reason.

Mike also set the world record for the most single-stroke roles in 60 seconds (1 minute) at 1,203 strokes. He was subsequently beat and the record is now held by Haruuun (Japan) in Musashino, Tokyo, Japan, on 24 July 2021 with 1,241 strokes. CRAAAAZY!!!! :-)

@@WilliamSarokon Technically, THOMAS LANG is now THE most advanced drummer on the planet, physically. (I just wish he was less mechanical.) (I also think MM is a dull robot.) Love me Gavin Harrison, but he's also UPTIGHT. (I like my drummers to be over the top, ala Cobham!)

You know at the beginning you start underestimate Mangini because you (me) have much respect for Portnoy, but if you actually give Mangini a chance and appreciate his music, he’s actually really good, at the end I show respect for both, Portnoy has a room in my preferences who anyone else is gonna take it but tbh I really enjoy listening to Mangini
