One of the greatest elements of this race I discovered is the spectators that invest quite a bit of effort and resources supporting the participants no matter who they were or what team they were driving for. We met a large number of folks that brought along all sorts of support tools like cutters, rivet sets, towing straps, and on and on just being out there as spectators. They said that a great part of the fun was to help in keeping the guys moving when ever they could. Pretty cool. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

It’s amazing how much of an absolute thrashing these trucks can endure. Seriously, hats off not only to the drivers and team members pulling together any successful run, but also to all the creative engineers and fabricators that come up with an always better design of the parts and methods that it takes to create these beasts that can endure the sustained abuse yet deliver such incredible performance all the way through a race like this. It’s truly amazing. Brilliant actually. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

There’s plenty of videos around from people and teams who e done the race that give you a general breakdown of cost. It’s not cheap.
@SkadooHusky5 ай бұрын
There are more affordable options available. This race in particular is open to pretty much anyone. Side by sides and Volkswagen beetles are relatively affordable and have their own classes. Bug racing has recently been gaining popularity again.
@jabroni61995 ай бұрын
@@SkadooHusky The vehicle cost is the cheap part of racing in Baja 1K. You need a myriad of spare parts, tools, at least 3 sets of driver/navigator. A chase team at each pit stop, those chase teams will need a chase vehicle, probably more than one. That's before we get into the cost of getting your race vehcile compliant with the rules and we haven't even touched on pre-running yet which is essential if you want to be able to finish the race.
@SkadooHusky5 ай бұрын
@@jabroni6199 there's a bike class in the Dakar rally that doesn't allow team support. What do you really need? What did they have when racing started?

iam a friend of dwight strobel. enjoyed the video.. i think all vehicles racing, should have head lights to the rear, after watching all the dust you guys have to deal with, and no idea if youll slam into somebody ahead of you, just from what i was watching.. caught myself, breathing real shallow, while watching this.. you must have some real good dust filters, also for the motor...

sorry the race went so shit for you guys, but damn you are fun to watch drive when youre pissed off! The fact you guys were in position for a podium (or win) at the end shows just hard you were pushing. I hope your boys in big red learned their lesson. Its safe to say fatigue may have played a role in that decision? We saw them at Arco at zoo road friday EARLY morning and they already looked toasty. You are a contender! Cant wait to see you push for wins in 24!

I didn’t know bumping was a common practice
@bradgriffith42315 ай бұрын
Sometimes, "bumping" is the only way to pass, when the guy in front won't move. #1 rule, Never pull out in the dust to pass because there will always be something to hit & destroy your vehicle. Make the guy in front, who has a clear vision of the course, pull over. The guy in back caught you so you're already beaten by him. The other point is, as Rick Mears said on Dale Jr.'s podcast, "Let them by. You'll probably pass them later after they break or crash."

What a set up brings a tractor plow up the silt and charge the crazy gringos for extraction....😅
@bradgriffith42315 ай бұрын
Desert silt gets chewed up with the first car through it & gets worse with every car that follows. It's called poof dirt where I live, west of Las Vegas, because it turns into a talcum powder type consistency when one drives over it. Always beware when there's a crowd of Mexicans watching & waving you on to go faster because they set up traps that will destroy you! LOL

Something is not right. There seems to be bad communication between the two of you...... At the beginning..... They must work together to achieve good results.
@bradgriffith42315 ай бұрын
I desert raced, built & fixed cars in the 80s. Still fix a car now & then today. I never had communication with my co-driver because I was driving, had to "read" the terrain as far in front of me as I could see, & didn't need the distraction of somebody trying to tell me how to drive. Anybody can drive fast in the desert. Raw speed doesn't win races. The "trick" is finishing without incident & you will probably place well. I won my class most of the time & always had 1 guy that outran me by less than 1 second per mile for overall. I NEVER cared about times while racing because you're racing the desert, not the other cars. I was also pretty good at stadium racing too, winning with the cheapest car & lowest HP engine in the field.

Mostly we race on roads designed for the race. Most of the established roads for transitions remain relatively intact as they are hardpacked.
