Yep.. there is a bit of perpetuating a self-made myth and image of Oldfield being a pioneering multi-instrumentalist, who did everything himself, and played it all by multi-tracking., All credit to the contributing musicians who didn't get a look in with the videos.
@Eustace.h.plimsoll66255 жыл бұрын
Inver ross yes he merely composed / arranged it and played most of the instruments.
@alanross29495 жыл бұрын
@@Eustace.h.plimsoll6625 Well the guitar was Mike's forte, but to be fair this tune and Portsmouth also relies on the Wind instruments for the melody, and drums for rhythm. But it looks like it's just one person playing. Mike didn't write it, though as they are very old medieval folk tunes, just modernised and arranged with guitar.
@Eustace.h.plimsoll66255 жыл бұрын
Alan Ross It's an arrangement of I Saw Three Ships. As someone who plays precisely no instruments my admiration for Mike Oldfield knows no bounds - actually I can do the intro to Smoke on the Water on one string ( which I gather is not how it should be done )

Indeed, it's not made perfectly clear in the video - but look at the final shot. The centre 'window' shows a wind-instrumentalist relaxing... With no beard or moustache, unlike Oldfield.

I just found this song again, after many many years. My father played it for me in the car when I was 6 or 7. We went home after a wedding and had to go through a dark forest and he played this song, among others.

+Laura Masters How did it take you so long to find it?????????????????????????

+Terry Tanktop My dad told me it was called Portsmouth. I had to scavenge around KZbin trying to find Portsmouth but it was all the same song. It wasn't until i came across a cover version of this that i finally found the actual name of the song is In Dulci Jubilo

Such a quality tune, legend. Music these days doesn't seem to think it needs a tune, just endless manufactured crap
