Great reaction. QE2 is like Mike’s Joy album. Light. Bright. Shiny. Like platinum but even more straight forward. Five miles out , the next one, starts a format shift for him where he will do one long composition on one side, and then shorter songs with actual lyrics on the second side. Honestly, some albums are more successful then others with that format. Five miles out and perhaps crisis’ more successful then say Islands. Amarok a whole different deal. But you should love Five Miles Out side 1. Really good.

Hank Marvin of The Shadows is one of the iconic pioneers and popularizers of lead electric guitar playing. His clean tone, smooth vibrato, reverb laden, highly melodic style was a big influence on many later guitarists. He was the first musician in the UK to play a Fender Stratocaster. Mark Knopler cites him as a major inspiration. Neil Young references him in one of his lyrics: "from Hank to Hendrix". And it's not surprising that Mike Oldfield pays tribute to him too.

Great review once again. There is some bagpipe in QE2 I think. That would be why the guitar sometimes replaces the melody line, because of the limitations of the bagpipe. England loves those bagpipes. There were bagpipes when their queen with the same name was sent off to a heavenly plane recently. In an interview Mike Oldfield replied to the question ‘What would you take with you to a deserted island if there was enough food etc: one thing only. His answer…..’well bagpipes of course!’

Hey Just...If you notice, Molli ends on a note that makes it link correctly to the tone of the first song on the album, turning it into an endless loop. 😁😁😁

Great review Justin! Taurus I and QE2 being my favourite tracks. Platinum and QE2 are nice lighthearted albums. And now proceed to Five Miles Out, Crises and Discovery... Mike again at his best!

"platinum part 2" - yes, I couldn't have put it better! Personally, on repeated listens, I have found QE2 the more compelling of those two albums, mainly because of the tracks Taurus 1 and QE2, as well as Celt (a track which seems to divide opinions, but personally I love it).

Hi Justin, great review as always, now you have listened to Platinum and QE2, I think you will be more happy with the next few albums as they are more 70's like Mike as the next 4 albums have some really long instrumentals, those albums were transition albums. The drums and Mike's guitar are highlights here for me. If you watch the official video for Wonderful Land you can see Molly sat on Mike's knee as he is playing guitar. Oh, and Justin, Mike's 1990 album Amarok is now on your horizon!! It's his greatest ever album, the 1 track album, which is 60 minutes long, it is astounding.

Yes, but I think you are possibly air-brushing "The Killing Fields" out of Mike Oldfield's discography... I don't want to say too much as reactions are best when not knowing what to expect; let's just say that one doesn't necessarily fit your description. BTW Amarok is still 7 albums away, chronologically, so it could be a few more years before that one arrives.

Thank you Justin. What a cool way to start Saturday nite, digging your reaction to this. I've been waiting for you to get to QE2 side 2. Is not Mike the master? QE2 is not epic like Ommadawn and Incantations but it's very good. Is more fun, sweet. QE2 is my favorite song on here. I find myself humming parts of it often. I find his guitar in the track QE2 interesting: listen to the melodic choices he makes. Some of the phrases are unexpected, they don't follow the "rules" of guitar composition, yet they flow right along musically and fit the song. And his bass playing in Celt is just sublime. He really is quite good on bass. All in all an excellent album. Is very cool that you reacted to this JP; I think you are the only reactor who has done this one. Cheers!

"QE2" is continuing where "Taurus 1" left off. Its an extended track cut in two. I think this album is more "filler" than substance. The next album "Five Miles Out" is a significant step back into the world of the first four. It also presents a continuous thread across sides which makes it considerably more epic. It produced a couple of chart hitters (the video of the title track is worth seeking out for the technical wizardry Oldfield was doing back then as well).

Now that you've finished QE2, you're going to experience Five Miles Out, One of my favourite Mike Oldfield's album, ad wellnas the other two that follows Is(Crises and Discovery). After Discovery there's the album "Island", I'm not a huge fan of It personally, but I know that some people actually like It, so you should take It a try.

Afternoon, Justin. Dave from freezing London (dreaming of A Place In The Sun). Love the Wonderful Land melody, but I don't think Mike's version is better, or different enough, than The Shadows' classic original. Highlight for me is probably Celt as, like Sheba, I like the Polynesian feel of the singing and the drums. But when you hark back to Incantations, there's the rub. Mike's first four albums were phenomenal, but some of what I heard of his follow-ups at the time seemed to me to be re-hashes of them. P.S. my song ref A Place In The Sun is also by The Shadows.

Yes - it is sweet ear candy - and after the somewhat heavy weighty pieces of the seventies it was nice to hear this lighter approach from him. An edit of Wonderful Land was released as a single accompanied by a rather cheesy video which I feel cheapens the track considerably but I love the full album version. Whilst there is still a good amount of multi layering of instruments there is little development and progression in the tracks - which adds to the lightness of the album. Thankfully he does return to a much more progressive and harder Rock sound for the next album "Five Miles Out" - definitely the highlight of the 80's albums. No one really knows or understands why Oldfield decided to title and reference the QE2 ship on the album. He doesn't have any links to it - and the ship was 11 years old when the album was released so not a marked anniversary. Oldfield has had a strong nautical connection with music though - from "The Sailor's Hornpipe" at the end of "Tubular Bells", the single "Portsmouth" from 1976 and he was long associated with the British childrens TV show "Blue Peter" (a ship's signal flag that it is about to depart)- as he re-worked the nautical hornpipe theme for it in 1979. The way he did this was documented by the programme (available on KZbin) and the theme was also released as a single. They kept his version of the theme for 10 years! The title track "QE2" definitely has a hornpipe feel to it and the sounds do suggest a ships launch and subsequent happy voyage. I think you are going to love the next few albums -they are much more developed, musically complex yet accessible and a mixture of instrumental tracks and proper vocal songs!

If you're serious about furthering your popular music education, Justin, you really should read a few paragraphs about The Shadows who were probably the most popular UK group prior to The Beatles. They weren't very good (in my opinion - well, pop music didn't really get going in the UK until the Fab Four) but their style was fairly influential on other bands in the early 60s and their lead guitarist is so famous he has his own cockney rhyming slang term. Meanwhile, I wish that QE2 was as good as 'Platinum part 2' implies. There was some more interesting stuff to come from Mike Oldfield but it was few and far between.

I was amazed by the remark "never heard of The Shadows".... really? Here in the UK, that is almost literally like saying "Never heard of Madonna," which I say because as at 2007 The Shadows were the fifth most successful act in the UK singles chart history, coming in behind Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Cliff Richard and Madonna, although on top of that they were Cliff Richard's backing band for many years. That said, I am also aware that while they were huge in Western Europe and the UK in particular, they were never really marketed in the USA, so I'm guessing that's why you've not heard of them. If you feel like checking out a few of their tracks some day, they have a large discography and quite a distinctive sound. Apache is probably their best-known track.
