I like the other two albums, but Ommadawn is the true work of genius. I really don't think there's another album quite like it on the planet. Most of Oldfield's early stuff is brilliant but Ommadawn stands out as something ordinary mortals just can't achieve.

correct but at least he was very popular for a time during his life. the popularity was very overwhelming and caused him to seek sanctuary in the countryside but he also learned to deal with it. his work was lauded by many critics and he was in a great position to pursue his art in any way he felt appropriate.

As a Mike Oldfield fan, I so enjoyed this conversation. I listened to Tubular Bells 40 years ago, in the time of monthly record clubs and not having much money, so you just listened to the record you got to justify its cost. It took me about 20 listens to get it, and that was the best thing to happen to my years. The end of side one of Ommadawn is my pure joy listen that I almost keep away from it as I don’t want to lose it.

Tubular Bells II is Mike Oldfield's finest hour (literally...). Incantations is superb, of course, but tends to drone on for a long time. I would rate his top 10 albums thus: 10. Islands 9. Hergest Ridge 8. Ommadawn 7. Amarok 6. Five Miles Out 5. Return to Ommadawn 4. The Songs of Distant Earth 3. Music of the Spheres 2. Tubular Bells III 1. Tubular Bells II

Mike Oldfield is one of my three favourite artists/bands. The others are Kate Bush and Jethro Tull. Their music doesn't sound difficult, but when you pick an instrument and try to squeeze out the emotion therein, you'll understand it is spiritual mechanics that drives the engine. They mean every note they play, and endow it with something out of this world, very few can. BTW, Mr. Reed is doing a wonderful job; his output is sublime. Thank you Mr. Edwards.

Finally a prog channel that pays tribute to the artist Pete Pardo deliberately avoids to talk about on his über-channel. Thank you Bob and Andy for some interesting insights. Curious to hear Andy's comments after listening to the holy trilogy. I'm also very fond of some sections on Incantations (1978) and a fan of Crises (1983) and Discovery (1984), his two 80's albums that perfectly matched the era. I agree with the statement that Mike became his own enemy. For example: Amarok (1990) was a genius effort but he ruined it in the end with the now dated Tatcher imitation. I believe Songs of Distant Earth (1994) was his last great work. After the disappointing Voyager (1996) I lost interest.

Most of my influences were established when I was a kid. That's when I got into Focus, The Beatles, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Renaissance, Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa, Gentle Giant and I'm probably leaving a few off my list but it was most of the major prog bands. But I didn't really discover Mike Oldfield until I was in my late 30s. I was aware of the Exorcist music and knew he did the soundtrack for it, but didn't listen to the full album or any of his other records until I decided one day to download Tubular Bells and listen to the whole thing. It left a deep impression on me, and that's saying something. Being exposed to such great prog bands at such a very young age makes it difficult for anything else to blow your socks off and adults are much less impressionable than kids. But Mike Oldfield's music really impressed me as an adult so much that for awhile he was all I listened to. I've listed to the holy trinity dozens of time and never tire of them. I haven't done that for any other band or artist since becoming an adult. And for a long time I thought it was just because music is so much easier to come by now. When I was a kid all I had was my cd collection and I got to know those albums intimately, especially the first few that I bought since it was all I had to listen to. I thought those days of listening to the same albums over and over again were done ... Until I heard Mike Oldfield.

I was fortunate to see Mike Oldfield on what I believe was his only U.S. multi-city tour in 1982 at the Park West in Chicago. It is a considerably intimate venue. We were at the bar, pre-show, and I realized percussionist Morris Pert was sharing space standing a foot or two away from us. That was an unexpected thrill in and of itself.

Excellent show guys - well done. However, I agree with those on here who say "Incantations" should have been included as part of a "holy quartet". Even though it was released 3 years after "Ommadawn", to me it feels like part four of sections of a musical encyclopaedia. As a double album on vinyl, it is only about 72 minutes long, which is not that much longer than the 49 minutes of "Tubular Bells". I love these first 4 albums and would rank them: 4. Hergest Ridge 3. Incantations 2. Tubular Bells 1. Ommadawn The other Mike Oldfield albums I own are "QE2", "Crises", "The Songs Of Distant Earth" and "Return To Ommadawn". These are also very good. On "QE2", Philip Charles David Collins drums on a couple of tracks. And "Moonlight Shadow" proved that Mike could write great pop songs too. Maggie Riley's vocals are of course sublime.

In the summer of 1987 I was sitting on the Promontory Point in Hyde Park, Chicago, looking out at Lake Michigan and listening to a tape recording I’d made of Hearts of Space, a late-night ambient music program. And this track came on: mostly acoustic guitar, and maybe mandolin, with tinkling, ringing percussion. Moderate tempo, lyrical, melodic, with fast runs up the fretboard and sharp pull-offs on the way down. I’ve been able to hear it in my head ever since. And it conjured up this imaginary scene of a wooden sailing vessel slowly approaching the Point after a long voyage; it was weirdly and memorably transporting. And I swear the host eventually identified it as a Mike Oldfield piece, but the tape is long gone and I’ve never been able to find the track. I would know it at once if I heard it, and was sure I’d find it once the whole digital thing happened, but I’ve listened through all the albums with no luck. Hergest Ridge is the closest thing, but that’s not it. I even searched a Hearts of Space archive and remembered two other artists on the program: Constance Demby and Stomu Yamashta. (The host had kind of a mushy lisp, and sounded funny saying those names.) But it wasn’t anywhere on the site. I can’t imagine there will ever be another place to vent about this (!), so thanks.

Many thanks for a great discussion about Mile Oldfield! I’ve been a huge fan of his since the 80s and apart from a couple of dodgy albums, I’ve loved everything he’s ever done. Like many, I love the Holy Trinity albums but his later work, especially Crises, Discovery and Five Miles out, is the soundtrack to my formative years. TB3 is one of my favourite updates to the original, and Songs of Distant Earth, Music of the Spheres and Return to Ommadawn are albums I could not live without. Very insightful video. Mike Oldfield is criminally underrated and needs more recognition. I personally like all his albums as there's so much variety on all of them. I wouldn't say he's made a bad record, obviously l think some are a lot weaker than others but I enjoy them all. With Mike sadly retiring it's great that people like Robert are making that style of music and working with veterans like Tom and Les is great. It really feels like they're carrying the torch forward. Rob's Sanctuary / Ringmaster albums are superb as is his electronic one 'Cursus 123 430'. His many other bands and projects are all great too, I've been catching up and I've just about every single back catalogue album of them all. If you're not very knowledgeable on Mike Oldfield Andy, do yourself a favour and dive into his back catalogue, plenty of great stuff there. Great video. Should be noted that he had all three masterpieces in the can at roughly the age of 22 years of age. Astounding. So mature and nuanced and masterfully conceived and executed. Spectacular, and the most important thing Richard Branson ever bankrolled. Plus there was some kind of cosmic alignment happening in 1971 72 73. Look at the incredible albums by Yes, Genesis, ELP. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc. etc. etc. during this period. The Muse was abundant and generous in her glory

My brother got the record and I listened to it one day (if I recall right he recommended it to me) and had really no idea what it was other than that it was amazing and the best thing I had ever heard. It really sounded like a miracle. I didn't know music like that was possible. Not just the sound, harmonies, melodies, I'm thinking of the whole structure, how it's all connected and grows gradually with patience. I had heard some parts Tubular Bells but it took a while before I connected them and then of course I sought it out and then Hergest Ridge and all the others (Incantations is also in the same ballpark). Was a bit disappointed with Amarok - not my thing, though there's some awesome stuff there as well.

Love love love the first 3 albums! I've been an Oldfield since TB but I can never understand why he insists on remixing or re-recording it so many times! Geezuz, Mike, just LEAVE IT ALONE!! Aside from the first 3 Amarok, Tubular Bells II and Crisis are my next favorites! It's interesting that here in the States Oldfield was never in the Progressive Rock category...to find his albums in record stores you had to go to the New Age category... The re-recording of TB is a disaster especially with the fly in the ointment of John Cleese's "mandolins!" twice! The second is way way down in the mix but once you've heard it you can never unhear it! 🤣 39:16 ... there was another guy in the late '90's or early 2,000's who put out an album (or two) that was very very Oldfield-ish and I'm wracking my brain trying to remember his name, iirc he was from the Netherlands (I think). The album(s) were sort of Oldfieldy music to listen to while we all waited for another Oldfield release. I got through an online Oldfield trading group and I know I have it archived on a dvd "somewhere" .... 🤔 1:04:47 ... yes, Steve Howe, the Gatekeeper (or rather the Cryptkeeper 🤣)

I love the first few minutes of TB but then it gets too disJointed and inconsistent especially with the instrument introductions.. to me it fragments the music in a way HR, Om. and Incantations do not.. They flow together so much more organically. I love the way the African drumming comes in with that haunting female chanting! I'm as American as Chicago but MO brings me into a lively atmosphere of a pastoral english countryside of my imagination!.

Hey Andy, off topic, but do you have a view on the whole Brian May/badgers imbroglio? If he is ultimately shown to be wrong about our stripey friends will affect his standing as a guitar hero? Should we keep Rock and agricultural issues separate? Might this be the start of a new trend with Jimmy Page weighing in on behalf of the red squirrel or Eric Clapton taking up the cause of bumble bees?

I thought I heard in a documentary that Friedkin's son had the album. Friedkin was having trouble deciding on the music for his film, heard the album and said "that's it!" Maybe I'm misremembering.

No, Friedkin described it as an A&R manager for Warner Bros going through boxes of potential demo music until he struck upon Tubular Bells. As soon as Friedkin heard it he knew it was the one. This as before the album had been released.

Rob's enthusiasm and clarity convinces me to start buying some Mike Oldfield. All I have now is Return to Ommadawn.

Return to Ommadawn is my "go to" album ... it is just superb .... .. side 1 of TB 1, lots of TB 2 (was at premiere at Edinburgh Castle), Crises, ... and many other tracks are stellar ... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland

I agree with this except I have Incantations in the list. For me it's those first 4.

I saw The Exorcist in 1974 at 14 years old. Big Mistake. That movie ruined me forever from appreciating Tubular Bells.

Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn and Amarok are the best for me. Return to Ommadawn and music of the spheres also very good. I don't get the love for his 90's new age Ibiza chillout musak albums. Including tubular bells II and III and grossly overrated songs of distant earth.

Tubular Bells is a great album, but there's no jazz in it.

Hugely talented guy but he did absolutely murder Abba's beautiful Arrival with his dreadful cover of that track.

It's a brilliant and excellent cover, in fact it is an improvement on the original, which was already good.

@@VeganFlatEarth Sometimes less is more and that definitely applies to the two versions of this track. I love the originals simple use of instrumentation and the way the music and voices gently flow and build as the track progresses. Imho, Mike's version is clunky with too much going on. But as always, each to their own and I'm always interested in talented artists doing their own versions of other talented artists songs.
