In 2024 coming back this this reminds me of why music was so special back then. Call it nostalgia or just listening to pure genius within the sound of the acoustic instrument from talent of the past.

The smile on master Oldfields face at the end of this piece says it all. It is not so easy to pull this off as perfectly as they do so his small sight of relief is testament of a mission well performed. I totally love this whole concert.

Saw this live at Edinburgh Castle. It was a phenomenal concert, and the BBC rebroadcast it about an hour after the concert ended for everyone to watch for free in the UK, so I got to watch it all again from the pub! You can't really hear it on the concert footage, but the roar that went up from the crowd as Mike struck the tubular bells even took him by surprise, which is why he turned round and mis-hit the bell right after! So good, especially when the the pipers came out. Goosebump city.

Ohhh lucky you. It must have been among the greatest days of your life, I guess. I have lost count of all the times, I’ve seen this concert on video and have actually noticed the roar from the audience, when Mr. Oldfield starts playing the Tubular Bells, but until I read your comment, I’ve never noticed that the roar surprises him so much that he misses a bell.

I could watch this concert on spanish TV live. At least they told that on tv. I didn't know that the broadcast was just when the concert had ended. After several months I could attend to the concert live in the tour. The only concert live I could see of Mike Oldfield. It was magical.

In fact, this is really the best Oldfield-Tube-show ever ! Unbelievable that this musicial genius had played 23 instruments on Tube 1 alone... in 1973! I saw Mike the first time in 1984 in Saarbrucken when I was 15 years old. It was my first LIVE discovery. Mike weard the same PUMA sportshoes like me... and in the air there was a funny smell... last thing I was remembering was that Simon Phillips on a snowwhite TAMA double bass drums kit was bombastic.. that sounded great...

+dewi4love I don't know if you can say he invented his own type of music. He certainly wouldn't. He said in an interview he thinks of himself as an old-school symphonic composer who happens to treat things like electric guitars and synthesizers as orchestral instruments.
