Jeg Hunckel i hate religion, but many people who follow religions do so because they were raised by parents who are still holding onto the dark ages. to a certain extent, i'd say it's not their fault, and often they do try to reinterpret the literature in a more modern and acceptable way. but eventually we do have to get rid of religion, because at least in most of the world, it does more harm than good

@Pappy Chulo "fighting fire with fire" doesn't have to mean "an eye for an eye". There are other options for firepower, such as a religion that requires women have the right to abortions if desired. Fighting guns with guns, bullying with bullying etc will always give the win to the most physically powerful & that's rarely in society's best interests. Look at how Vietnam won against the might of the US military, they didn't do it by outgunning them, they did it with tactics & being smart. That's what's needed here, not just an escalation in violence (which is how I read what you're saying, although I might be interpreting it wrong?) Consistently in the last 50 or so years, the only way dictators have been toppled & replaced with democracy rather than a worse dictator has been via people power & non-violent revolution, using the media to draw light on the violence of the regime in order to cause it's downfall. No-one can defeat the US government & military, it must be turned to support "the other side" - by having the majority of the people on "the other side", therefore making it the right side & giving it the military & psychological power position. I while back I found that the state I live in in Australia technically considers abortion illegal unless it jepodises the mother's health. That law's never been changed, because far right fools would have potentially challenged any action to change it & caused a problem, so it's still there as a legacy law, even though age of medical consent in Australia has been reduced to 14, speficially to allow young women easy access to abortions & birth control. If a woman wants an abortion, it is just documented as required for her physical or mental health, there's no limits on access despite the law. I wonder how common that situation is, do you know the technical law in Canada?

There were Puritans, Quakers, msny of the rest of them were deists. They wanted the freedom to practice their own religion or none at all. They also didn't want there to be a State religion. The original Pledge of Allegiance did not include the words "under God." That was added in 1957(maybe '56). My parents and grandparents weren't aware it had changed and taught me "...one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." I made a splash in kindergarten! LOL Seriously, the Assemblies of God started the movement to add "under God." It was the perfect climate at that time. I'm not sure that would fly today. But, then again, 2016 caught me off guard.

The forefathers left because they were not allowed to practice their faith how they wanted to - with extreme prejudice and violence. at the time, Britain was going for religious tolerance, even the Catholics were not being killed on sight but many religious groups were unhappy with this curtailing of their "religious rights" so left in order to persecute the "unbelievers" how they sought fit. The founding fathers realised that religious intervention in politics was toxic to a safe and prosperous society and formulated the separation of church and state in the constitution and emphasised that the United States would be completely Areligious, even going so far as to explicitly state as such in some of the earliest treaties of the United States. However the more "extreme" religious sects have been fighting back over the years and are now infiltrating and perverting US politics to reassert their religious agenda over everyone and are apparently succeeding.

You can thank Roger Williams and the tiny state of Rhode Island for insisting on the separation of church and state. Williams left the puritans in Massachusetts to escape religious persecution and found solace from the native Americans here. He founded the Baptist religion in the process.

This is a topic talked about way too little. I don't want Trump impeached because that would allow Pence to run as incumbent and he's an excellent candidate who's acceptable to all Republicans. This makes me not want to be alive Like seriously it seems like ppl are doing so much work on making sure only wealthy white ppl stay living healthy... The lengths that ppl go through to push their narrow selfish agendas literally just depresses me and makes me want to end it all on my terms...maybe that’s the grand plan? I don't see how this ever flies: the argument that your religious freedom is threatened whenever somebody else doesn't adhere to or ascribe to your own religious beliefs. Nobody is forcing Christian conservatives in the U.S. to worship in secret, nor is the government imposing a mandated, state-sponsored religion upon them. If anything, they are the ones imposing religion upon the state! That is not the action of a group facing persecution, but of one seeking to dominate. Their claim to collective victimhood is laughable, and that argument should never have been given credence. Somehow, perversely, it flourishes.
