I'm gonna have them play this song at my furneral. Not because of the religious lyrics (im not even religious), but this song is my favorite. Its a masterpiece. Im sitting in awe every time I hear it. Rock symphony, so to speak. Simply stunning.

It‘s so tasty because of the snare flam (double hits) at the beginning and the two cymbals at the end. It comes together very well with the toms in the middle

Oops I just slipped on my laptop pad thing and accidentally rated this one star. Should probably leave a positive comment to make up for it then! Amazing song, and solid drumming from Mike - even if it's by no means one of his best pieces of work. Can't wait to see it live in November!

It would have been cool if this song was also chosen as one of the audition pieces in the drummer audition. Imagine the interpretations of those 7 drummers to this song.

Yeah but apparently if you don't play exactly like the record, you're done (as seen in the videos)

absolutely! got your back dude :P but anyways, despite the drumset, gotta love from 1:34 to 1:49, the keyboard sound there is awesome and even funny, just imagine if JP used a powerchord (or whatever is it called) instead of just one string on that part...
@CKjuao16 жыл бұрын
in my opinion, mike is not the fastest player, he doesn't have the best technique, but he is indeed the best drummer of all, because of what he composes, look at the way how he fills and his grooves, the way he can play in a musical way even in the most heavy songs, he is the MASTER!.

He has a new set for nearly every album, Originally he was with Mapex. But bottom line is he has a lot of sets. Back when he had the purple monster (SFAM) he had two others permanently stored in Europe and Asia, the green and red monsters I believe. He has probably used 15 sets or more with DT alone.

everyone has parts that can be tough to them, and other parts that might be impossible to some, may be easy for others. everyone has individual strengths. i dont recall what part of in the name of god you are talking about, but i do think thats a good song for people who wanna learn DT to start at.

I TOTALLY agree. If you can play 1 million drums in a minute who cares.. but if you can play slow with rhythm and get the same reaction then you are 110% better than the person who can play a million drums in a minute.

If you're looking for speed and presition try Hellhammer originally from the norwegian black metal band Mayhem. He also plays with Dimmu Borgir and other bands.
@VentoRdrummeR17 жыл бұрын
yeah I liked his work on the awake and images & words records most... he´s still a genius, but the sound on the systematic chaos album makes it sound less brilliant. You´re damn right lookin forward to seeing them, I did yesterday and they simply ruled the city! wow and the songs from that album sounded much better live!

Mike Portnoy is the god of Drums! His legend! His in Hall of Fame when his about 20+ smting or 30+ i mean.. younger drummer just like Neil Peart I think.. i just cant remember truly~ any who~ Mike influence by Neil Peart that's why 54 seconds said by ElectricClown 1 sounds a like~ ryte? hehe~
@63509916 жыл бұрын
I agree with LOLC4T, why can't people just enjoy the music. There are also a lot of people out there in You Tube land who say I can play this, or I can play that better than he can. Or, he can't be that good because that fill was easy. My problem with most of those people is, they're not on You Tube and they have to copy everything, nobody is copying them.None of these people have made it anywhere. Mike Portnoy is among the greatest it always feels right when he plays and he has fucking power.

Holy crap once again, but you can tell this was his first time in the studio in months due to how awkward most of his movements were in the first 30 seconds or so.
@tiekoe16 жыл бұрын
Dream theaters rhythms on this album aren't to complicated, and pretty easy to learn by heart in a short time.. the the that impresses me on the video is the fluidity of portnoy playing, and the superb timing he display. He might not play the most complicated things, but he's a powerfull and accurate drummer.. as long as he's not playing solo, they kinda suck :P
