so, yes...protect the legs. I also propose the idea that they dealt with a medical issue that isn't spoken of. When you're on your feet for hours, as you age, and walking all over....edema. That stretch but bind helps keep the edema out of the legs and improve circulation and helps keep you moving. As a nurse, I've wrapped as you are for the sake of treating edema and lymphedema

Yeah I'd imagine that's a good side effect of it! We had a guy slip over in a sword fight very badly , his ankle twisting with a really painful style. Turned out he had broken his ankle, the doctors at the AandE said because of the bindings it had not become a compound fracture as he was basically wearing a compression bandage already.

It's the same as bandaging basically. As a motorcyclist I've been doing this for years, didn't even know it was historical - I just got sick of taking rocks off my shin bones, had one fracture the bone and break the skin pretty badly so took to leg windings as an easier alternative to half chaps and better in the cold. Although I use material that blends in not stands out, most people wouldn't even notice. I've had some people think they were part of my boots.

@@TwoMikesProductions Oh, and by the way--Linen doesn't stretch EXCEPT when you cut it on the BIAS. Cut it on the bias and you get all the stretch you need. @@TwoMikesProductions Point taken. But I didn't have any wool. I did have linen. See, this is Texas, and on February 4 (the event is on the 8th) it's 72 degrees out. This is winter, Houston-style. Linen leg wraps vs. heatstroke. Thanks, though. Really.
@TwoMikesProductions4 жыл бұрын
@@DannyJane. Man... I cannot even begin to imagine the heat of Texas. I will say though, wool does a better job of breathing than linen as wool dissapates both heat and sweat much faster than linen. Linen quickly gets sweaty and makes you feel uncomfortable as with other plant fibres (easiest way to think about it is think Denim when you are on a hot July day in Houston in jeans. Its gross isnt it). The wool available to them would be of incredible quality as well, spun much finer than we imagine (They werent using chunky twill stuff) so it would be super effective at it. If it gets really hot though, manuscripts show people removing their trousers and legbindings completely rather than changing to linen basically.

Absolutely nail on the head. Infection from small injury in a time without treatment could be potentially lethal. Not everyone is wearing these but I’d be willing wager anyone who works in the field or the woodland is wearing them for protection. This gets backed up by the various calendar paintings and late Roman images of field hunts in the woodland where the are explicitly wearing tight fitting puttees basically. Thanks for the comment!

Hey Mike, can you explain your comment on leg wraps with Viking baggy pants a bit more? I’ve just invested in a pair of baggy pants for a new kit, but I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “drain pipe system” to keep the wrappings from falling. What does this look like and how might one acquire them? I’d be bummed to rock up to an event only to have my wrappings keep falling. Thanks!
@TwoMikesProductions5 жыл бұрын
Liam Waters hi Liam! Owing to the fact KZbin doesn’t let pics in its comments, I’m going to try and describe it :D Basically a drainpipe system onnthe baggies is where instead of the trouserleg being made of one massive tube,meaning you would have to gather loads of material up causing your winningas to not fit properly, basically you have the main trouser which is super baggy and often pleated. This comes to just below the knee. From the knee down it’s an additional attached piece of the garment which clings tight to your calf thus reducing the material under the winningas making it much less likely to fall down. I really hope I have done that justice!
@liamh2os5 жыл бұрын
Mike Everest super helpful, thank you! The trousers I’ve acquired do not have such an attached piece with them. Do you have any recommendations to troubleshoot that issue? I’m assuming that putting the wrappings over bare skin isn’t effective.
@TwoMikesProductions5 жыл бұрын
@@liamh2os wrapping over bare skin can be effective, I do that for romans, but it requires a tight bind and importantly it really needs to be the cloth style that I show in the video to give it grip. However, dont take the shears to the strides just yet! These things are all fixable. Try first without any alteration, it may work well. If thats not working well, take a slice out the back of the trouser from ankle to just under knee and bring it in with some clever stitching. If in doubt, chuck us a pic on my 'portals to the past - mike' page on FB and I'll have a look for ya. :)

They are scaled up versions of the Hedeby boot (which is actually a childs pair of shoes) and I had them made by Andy Burke in the UK. They are expensive but the quality is exceptional.

Can I make those out of Cotton?

You can try, but I'd say cotton is less stretchy and without the weave required to bind them properly . Wool will always be the best

@TwoMikesProductions4 жыл бұрын
Against stinging nettles and brambles... but anything with a bladed edge and intent to slash would go through this with ease. Even bound with this many layers. You need a LOT of cloth to bind a sword blow (Linothorax for example, if made from Linen would have been something like 40 layers)

Can you wrap your thighs as well to help protect against the cold?
@TwoMikesProductions2 жыл бұрын
You would have to have so much material and I think the the amount movement your thigh muscles do it simply wouldnt work. I've never seen any historical evidence of them doing it so i'd hazard a guess at no. I think as you are wearing hose or trousers etc and thigh length tunics its going to help.

How can one get a decent pair of winningas for a relatively good price - or make them? Most of the ones I've seen are pretty expensive, and I dont have enough economic independence to purchase them. I could, but that would mean not getting other things.
@TwoMikesProductions6 жыл бұрын
Its worth waiting and not rushing in re-enactment. Good kit is always worth getting. In my experience, unless you can weave properly (a skill that takes a long time to learn) then it is worth buying good quality leg bindings and making the rest of your kit. You can buy a very good pair for between 30 and 40 pounds quite readily available now at a lot of re-enactment markets or on the links I have on the vid. Good luck on your re-enactment journey!

What material are you using?
@viktorhammering61026 жыл бұрын
Mike Everest recycled wool materials.
@TwoMikesProductions6 жыл бұрын
Hmm. It'll be the weave then thats causing it to fall. If you have cut them from strips of cloth rather than having them woven for the job then you wont get them to stay up without doing a twist every now and then.
@viktorhammering61026 жыл бұрын
Mike Everest they were purchased as leg wraps just that the material is recycled but will try spinning it as the material is rather stiff! Thanks! :)

I paid him $123 on November 11th for leg wraps. He has not sent them and has now stopped writing to me. I am going to see if PP can get me a refund, but I would rather have the leg wraps.
