The videos I've watched up till yours a compass was used. I don't have a compass. Sure am glad I came across your video. Easiest way I've seen to make the octagon and no compass needed. Thanks a million.

Thank you so much Mike for taking your time to make these videos that teach us beginners very useful techniques. I am making an octagon end table made of walnut. I wanted an accurate octagon for the shape so this really helped. After shaping the table top I want to route the edge with the Roman Ogle profile then inlay,1" from the edge, a 9/16" wide strip of marble tile I got from Home Depot all around the whole outer section of the table top. Then I want to insert a 4" piece of padauk in the center and out line it with a thin piece of brass. The column down to the legs will be turned on the lathe also of padauk. I am not sure what type of wood or style the legs will be or the number. 3 or 4 I guess. Anyway thank you again so much. You are an awesome craftsman.

Almost Perfect octagon, use sqaure w unit 8. Cut of all corners at 45 D at 2.343 into sides, remaining virgin face is 3.314 (8) and formed cut sides are 3.3135, if you can measure accurately enough. SO if you g a 6" sqaure the corner cutoffs are 1.75725"

Would it be possible, using the shim, to flip the pieces over and knock the corners of the other piece and end up with two octagons? Obvious the nails would get in the way.
@mfwoodshop
@mfwoodshop 10 жыл бұрын
Great question, and yes the only safety concern is there is not a lot of surface area to hold against the shim. I did that on my bird house and that's what I found. It still worked.

If you were doing multiple octagons I think it would be easier to lay them out with the octagonal table from your framing square and then gang cut them.
