The British Crown considered the Numbered Treaties to be an exchange for the surrender of Indigenous Rights and Title to land, so settlers from foreign lands could occupy lands within the colonial territories that the British laid claim to. In return, the British Crown guaranteed First Nations certain Treaty and Inherent Rights in perpetuity.
@kayeclarke75617 сағат бұрын
First Nations that signed these Numbered Treaties believed they were entering a trust relationship with the British Crown; First Nations were to share and co-exist with settlers from foreign lands. Therefore, First Nations never agreed to the sale of their lands and resources. Instead, they agreed to share their Indigenous lands, to the depth of a plough, as stated in the following quote:

A bill destined for the waste bin is not worth the millions of taxpayer dollars that will be spent on it before it will be rejected. Fiscal responsibility? Obviously not. While you may be one of New Zealand's great intellectuals you seemed to have missed the whole point of the Treaty Principles bill. It seeks to sneak in short cuts for business interests (transnational corporations naturally) to bypass safe guards for public resources. That is, to make it easier for transnationals to make a profit at our expense. That is why ACT and sections of the National Party find the treaty so troublesome. It puts a spoke in the rape of public resources.

A lot of people on here still think the British Empire is alive and kicking. I hate to break it to you, but the Empire died in ignomny at Singapore in 1942. The conquered are equal citizens now.

What's your point? People for the Bill want it because it would make all Kiwis equal. You're typical of over emotional fools who have gone off on some weird path with no idea what they're talking about.

In fact it still is alive via the Westminster tradition in NZ Parliament & New Zealand’s system of government is described as a constitutional monarchy. It means that, while our Head of State is a hereditary monarch (the Sovereign). Let’s break free and MAGA (Make Aotearoa Great Again)

easy to tell which voters follow this narrative. Good ole kiwis - not many Maori. Not the diaenfranchised, not the natives, not those most effected by the changes to the founding document mostly the beneficiaries of colonisation. Those the land was taken for not taken from. Good luck with your conscience

Presently, it is a PR exercise by the Maori Party. That said, in the last poll, 46% surveyed supported the bill, 29% opposed the bill and 25% weren't sure. Since National is going to vote down the Bill in the second reading, Seymour has wasted tax payers money, cost the economy money in lost productivity which doesn't look good for Seymour and his party who promotes him and themselves that the party is is about saving tax payer money and increase productivity to enrich the party's wealthy supporters.

Seymour played the Nats like fools in coalition talks now he is playing National right wing voters using fear mongering (this "bill" and his never ending slanted dog rhetoric) to attract their votes in 2026 and sadly I believe it is working. National made a huge error allowing the "bill" into Parliament.

Interesting outlook. Because act was voted in on their policy its a waste of money? Or because the stats you shared show the minority dont like it?

@@argondemad8024 - What planet are you on? National has said they will vote the Bill down on the second reading, to me, that is a waste of money and time that Seymour has created considering him and his party is about less spending of the tax payer's money. By the way, 46% surveyed supported the bill, 29% OPPOSED the bill and 25% WEREN'T SURE.

Mr Hosking, the bill was designed to inflame, it inflamed. Your slick, sweeping presentation skipping over the key issues obfuscates rather than clarifying anything.

@@spider-man910 Ok. David is being disingenuous when he says he wants equality for all. Contrary to what he says, many many people with experience and past authority are saying his bill will be damaging to both Maori & most Pakeha. These include former prime ministers Helen Clarke, Jenny Shipley & John Key (the latter obviously both being from National). They also obviously include the other opposition parties, TPM, The Greens & Labour, but I presume you will discount them. On top of all of those people, the Kings Council, the most prominent and experienced lawyers in the country have publicly stated how damaging to our constitution (ToW) it will be, as well as the Waitangi Tribunal (one aspect of their role is to screen for harmful incoming legislation). The protestors have the same message as everyone listed above. It will damage much of the protection the treaty enables for everyone here as well as environmental protection for the land. Is that clear enough for you?
