Everybody here is so good at judging but looks like mike is very busy playing tours on tours all around the world for the last 45 years. 3 albums with Miles Davis should be enough said!!!. He is a humble great person too!!

is using any pedal? saw a gig last night and the guitar player had the same tone without a pedal and that made me curious...
@plasticlaces6 жыл бұрын
Not too sure if he's using a pedal, but this is definitely a chorus effect. The guitarist you saw the other night probably had a chorus effect built in his amp (as I believe some popular Roland Jazz amps do).
@fendafred4 жыл бұрын
In his Rig Rundown interview with John Bohlinger, Mike says that he's using a Yamaha SPX90 III Pitch Change preset (set to 0 change...) to add a chorus effect. He's likely to use it in that video.
@johnmcminn94553 жыл бұрын
@@plasticlaces yes the equipment is a"vintage" Yamaha rack He is definitely running 2 amps in stereo . Those racks allowed 2 inputs 4 out and an effects loop I guess that's what Mike is comfortable with, if it ain't broke don't fix it, M.O. Funny how those racks from the 90s had everything you needed, it's just they need battery replacement and servicing, otherwise more folks would hold on to them . Digitech 2012 was a good one, it is the only rack to have no drop out in preset switching . 20 years later, still the only one . Using pedals you get no drop. But digital effects chains usually do Unless you use the expression pedal. To dial in 2 different sounds full up, full down, then you can get seem less switching

It’s the Yamaha spx (half) rackmount unit as mentioned. Set to the the super fat pitch-change chorus-y effect that’s only possible with that unit. Mike has said in interviews that it became part of his sound in the 90s and he’s looked at trying to get the sound duplicated in a newer (possibly pedal) form since the Yamaha unit is no longer made. Apparently to no avail, as he still uses the Yamaha at nearly every show. The times I’ve seen him live, he’s run the Yamaha (stereo) into either two Fender Twin Reverbs or Roland Jazz Chorus amps. IMHO-Chorus can seem like a dated 1980s/90s sound and I get that some listeners react negatively to it. When I listen to Mike Stern play, I respect his artistic choice to use it as part of his tone and simply enjoy his tremendous musicality and insane chops.

Of those who have dabbled in fusion in their careers, Stern is one of the few guitarists of his generation that sounds like he actually listened to classic jazz. To me, Scofield has never showed the same depth of jazz vocabulary. He is more sui generis and his sense of swing seems to have little to do with bop. That goes double for Frisell.

Seems like mike works on being more melodic and mainstream on top of having great chops. I read an interview, where he said he will read sheet, like most people watch TV or read a book, i love that guys attitude, Eric Johnson as well.

Scofield went in a different direction. Mike really keeps his chops up. Also when Mike has a good rhythm section drummer and bass, he is on another level

@giobelen2 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of the chorus sound either (don't get me wrong, I think Mike Stern's playing and ideas are superb), but there are plenty of jazz guitarists who don't use this kind of tone. Try checking out Joshua Meader, Ben Eunson, and Julian Lage. Each of them are fairly different in style from one another-I think they're all awesome
