What a great band! Already booked a ticket for November 2019 with Mike and Dennis. Two of the greatest musicians around and, of course, I can NEVER miss a single show that features DENNIS CHAMBERS on drums. The groove and control he has is spellbinding. PS I also love that Mike is singing now.

I thought, when younger studying jazz, that Sco and Frisell were a notch above this guy. After 30+ years i now understand what Mike does, where I took inspiration and how he paced it all together, I am now convinced this guy is a genius. J Doe, hear Bird without listening and all he's themes are the same. Mike has a style, liked it or not, and he follows his path, regardless. cheers

Totally. You could call it Jazz Fusion - but it's not really Larry Carlton or Spryo Gyro Jazz fusion. It's Funk and Rock with Jazz chords, progressions and Berklee level music insanity of scales over chords. Would you describe it similarly? It's just got more pocket and bite to sync your teeth into and groove to than some jazz with some of the rock riffs (pentatonic riffs) and doesn't have the cheesy chord progressions of what a lot of fusion (jazz and pop?) has. I got turned on to "Fat Time" on Marcus Miller's SXM show. Mike just kills it and yeah, I've been going after more of Mike since then.

@@het_gele_teken I have seen Stern many times, mostly with Chambers, once with Weckl. Only once with Weckl because the same music has more power and feel with Chambers. I think the interpretation of Stern's music, which is fusion, is delivered more with Chambers. Everything Weckl plays has a Latin/Jazz feel. Chambers delivers the fusion! Weckl's style down plays it, Chambers raises it.

Dennis is actually a Jazz musician first! He gets a lot of attention for his next level speed and chops but he started with jazz. He told me that Jazz was the gateway to the other styles.... jazz essentially made the other styles “swing” or bounce in a sense! He definitely has that “bounce” in every context he plays!!! There's something really fascinating about Chambers' technique that I still can't quite put my finger on: When I listen to other technically skilled drummers -- e.g., Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Philips, Gavin Harrison -- I often sense that I can "hear" their thought process. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) But when I hear Dennis Chambers play, *everything* he does, no matter how technically sophisticated, just sounds like he FELT IT. There's seemingly a remarkable lack of pretense or rigorous calculation behind his note placements and subdivisions. I'd love to wrap my head around how he achieves that!

II have the good fortune to experience Mike perform on several occasions throughout the years and he was always surrounded by a stellar group of musicians , all virtuoso's in their own right and every show was brilliant, whether on the stage of a larger venue or up close and personal at the 55 Bar in Manhattan where he performs regularly when not on tour. I have watched him perform from only a few feet away and was no less impressed.From what i have seen Mikes shows ranged from brilliant on an average night to transcendent. Mike is also a great band leader because every musician is allowed their time to shine, but always within the larger context of the musical performance. My only complaint about Mike is that he does''t sing more, because the beautiful vocal harmonies that he scat sings along with his playing show he has a great voice.

Simply divine performance from exceptional musicians. But watching this and clips from other bands including, say, Rush, has me wondering how those drummers that spend so much energy playing their kits get to become so chubby in their mature years? There are lots of examples, I just used Rush because Neil Peart was a universal figure who obviously burnt calories like a volcano on stage and yet managed to gain like 100lbs over his 40-year tenure.... just musing, 😊
@niwa957
@niwa957 3 жыл бұрын
Not so bad, that observation. An aging metabolism combined with alcohol and lack of self-control in front of the fridge might lead to this refurbishing of male physique. They only burn their calories behind the drums,that is the point.
@kavemankarl2588
@kavemankarl2588 3 жыл бұрын
@@niwa957 I get you but what I wonder about is if a drummer is bound to over-eat to compensate for the expended energy his instrument requires. That being said not all drummers are obese, but the heavy ones seem to be overrepresented among members of rock, jazz and fusion bands. Maybe they're simply paying homage to Billy Cobham? 😁
