All I can say is wow, Mike is such an inspiration as are all these fantastic players in their own right. As a bassist I am just awed by Tom Kennedy. I met Mike Stern long ago at a concert he was doing in Ann Arbor. My friend and I arrived early for the beat seats and Mike opened the door into me by accident and he could not have been nicer about it. He visited with us for quite awhile even though he was trying to source an amp for the show, he didn’t have to take the time to talk with us but he did and was very gracious and in no rush about getting back to his more pressing matters. This really illustrated to me what kind of person he is as well as being an icon. Same can be said of John Scofield, who I met once at the same venue as I was walking out the door and he invited me to meet and hang out with his group after I attended both shows. Both true gentlemen and pillars of the idiom! Love this live performance and the recording quality. Go Mike go! Your music is timeless!

I've seen Mike Stern twice, both times at the 55 Bar. I saw him once before he had his accident, and again this past Wednesday (2/12/20). If you haven't been to the 55, it's a small, intimate place. If you're lucky enough to get a table in the front, assertive players will have no issue playing right in your face. Stern is such a player, and I had the pleasure of observing his technique from about a foot away. It's amazing to see how he's bounced back from this accident: there were certainly a few passages where he was choppy, but overwhelmingly he sounded as good as he did before 2016. I'm particularly inspired by this as I've long feared carpal tunnel; I type a lot at my day job, but I've been playing for 28 years and wouldn't know what to do if I couldn't. So to see Stern DEALING with this and doing so with grace, humor, and determination: it's incredible. It also shows his fortitude: as has been well publicized, Stern is an alcoholic. Think about how tempting it would be for the average person to say "Well, I've had a great career, so why try given this? I'm just gonna drown myself in booze until the end." This is my guess, but it would seem logical that given his alcoholism and now with this injury, Stern is fighting inner and outer demons all the time. And he wins. And we're better for it.

I had the same feeling about post brain trauma pat martino, tho i still loved pat. well, this…this performance puts any and all doubt about mikes right hand to rest. This dude (M.S.) is a musical charm on two legs. Can't stop listening to his one of a kind guitar sound and that one and only way of phrasing. I would be a *complete moron* if I wouldn't take deep bow addressed to the rest of the band. There must be a good reason why Mike often asks these people (Richie Morales (dr), Tom Kennedy (b), and that Italian Mafia insert (just kidding Lol...) Bob Franceschini (Ts), to play in his various formations. My deep bow and appreciation for making my life so reach and so enjoyable goes to all of these cats, and many others (The list would be too long to mention all of them but, I can't resist mentioning one name, and that is Michael Brecker, the man whose life and music helped me to become who I am today...
