Without question Mike Rutherford's lyrics are powerful, however Paul Carrack's vocals are what makes the song come breathing at you from his heart.

B.A. Robertson`s lyrics and song..Co write M.Rutherford..Carrack`s father also died, when Paul had 11 years..That s the one of the reasons, WHY song is so , so deep and Powerful..Have a nice time, and God Save you, all..

I was 21 when Dad died. I had just come from the hospital when they called to tell me he passed. I miss him. I see his strong hands when I close my eyes. Just one more hug... just one more hug.

I had many differences with my Dad, it wasn't until my 30s that i resolved them, sadly at 49 i lost him.i wish he was still here, i have so much more i want to say. This song made me resolve those issues and difficult times we had when i was a child wat back when this was released. Do it today, go see him, son or daughter go to him and sort it, then enjoy your time you both have left together. RIP DAD (John) Thanks BA Robertson (check the writers version) it was his experience in the lyrics he wrote. just copy and paste this (ba robertson living years above ) and also you will hear the name of the young babys real name from the song, and there is a surprize at the end of video(i wont tell you,it will spoil it), you think this version makes you cry watch this one the way it was meant to be.

Every generation Blames the one before And all of their frustrations Come beating on your door I know that I'm a prisoner To all my Father held so dear I know that I'm a hostage To all his hopes and fears I just wish I could have told him in the living years Oh, crumpled bits of paper Filled with imperfect thought Stilted conversations I'm afraid that's all we've got You say you just don't see it He says it's perfect sense You just can't get agreement In this present tense We all talk a different language Talking in defence Say it loud (say it loud), say it clear (oh say it clear) You can listen as well as you hear It's too late (it's too late) when we die (oh when we die) To admit we don't see eye to eye So we open up a quarrel Between the present and the past We only sacrifice the future It's the bitterness that lasts So don't yield to the fortunes You sometimes see as fate It may have a new perspective On a different day And if you don't give up, and don't give in You may just be okay So say it loud, say it clear (oh say it clear) You can listen as well as you hear Because it's too late, it's too late (it's too late) when we die (oh when we die) To admit we don't see eye to eye I wasn't there that morning When my Father passed away I didn't get to tell him All the things I had to say I think I caught his spirit Later that same year I'm sure I heard his echo In my baby's new born tears I just wish I could have told him in the living years Say it loud, say it clear (oh say it clear) You can listen as well as you hear It's too late (it's too late) when we die (it's too late when we die) To admit we don't see eye to eye So say it, say it, say it loud (say it loud) Say it clear (come on say it clear)

We have a policy at our house. Whenever a family member or close friend is leaving, we make sure we tell them we love them. With a kiss or hug if possible. You never know when that person is going to step out of the house and into eternity. It was a close call for me one day when I kissed my wife good bye, and later that day a 28’ motor home hit me broadside at 70 mph. I made it home that day, but it put a brilliant point on our policy which now extends to telephone calls. You just can’t say I Love You enough.
