This is one of those songs that I heard in the background while growing up but never listening to it. One day I actually listened to the words. Now it's like a punch in the heart. The past hasn't changed but I have.

I first heard this covered by Michael Tait and the Newsboys. It was really odd because this Michael had said that he Was there when his father passed away. Also I still had my father then. Now I have about as many regrets as this singer does... Because I can't make it up with them anymore.,😢

This song haunts me because I lost my father when I was 32 (1998). I tear up every time I hear it. RIP Dad, I Love you!! Funny or ironic, we both had generally the same point of views. My youngest was born 8 months after he passed away, so the verse "I think I caught his spirit Later that same year, I'm sure I heard his echo In my baby's new born tears" destroys me to no end. I can't get back that time lost, but I hope to do better with my daughters.

That record can turn grown men, myself and my brother included, into blubbering wrecks. We lost our father while we were still teenagers and that beautiful record puts how that feels into words and music. It’s just about how men often don’t talk to their fathers properly while they have chance during ‘the living years’. Nice sun lighting you this week by the way.

Only the Lyrics matter in this song, so Powerful. I still cry when I hear this song not because of the message of not making the most of your time with your father when alive, but it scares me that had I not made time in His last years how bad I would have felt. I was lucky, I said good bye to my father and told him how much I loved him and how he was my best mate. One of my all time favourites.

Every generation Blames the one before And all of their frustrations Come beating on your door I know that I'm a prisoner To all my Father held so dear I know that I'm a hostage To all his hopes and fears I just wish I could have told him in the living years Oh, crumpled bits of paper Filled with imperfect thought Stilted conversations I'm afraid that's all we've got You say you just don't see it He says it's perfect sense You just can't get agreement In this present tense We all talk a different language Talking in defence Say it loud (say it loud), say it clear (oh say it clear) You can listen as well as you hear It's too late (it's too late) when we die (oh when we die) To admit we don't see eye to eye So we open up a quarrel Between the present and the past We only sacrifice the future It's the bitterness that lasts So don't yield to the fortunes You sometimes see as fate It may have a new perspective On a different day And if you don't give up, and don't give in You may just be okay So say it loud, say it clear (oh say it clear) You can listen as well as you hear Because it's too late, it's too late (it's too late) When we die (oh, when we die) To admit we don't see eye to eye I wasn't there that morning When my Father passed away I didn't get to tell him All the things I had to say I think I caught his spirit Later that same year I'm sure I heard his echo In my baby's new born tears I just wish I could have told him in the living years Say it loud, say it clear (oh say it clear) You can listen as well as you hear It's too late (it's too late) when we die (it's too late when we die) To admit we don't see eye to eye So say it, say it, say it loud (say it loud) Say it clear (come on say it clear) Say it loud (Don't give up, don't give in and don't look away 'til it's too late) Say it clear Say it loud (say it loud, say it loud)

Tell the people you love that you love them. Let everything you need to say be said while you can. We never know when the last chance will be. A lament for his Dad that he loved so much, but never really told him that, the Dad he couldn't get along with very well...but wishes it had been different. But then his Dad was gone one day and the chance was gone forever. All you can do now Is honor him. The Living Years. Real Sadness. Real regret. A determination to be better...to be more like the man who made him what he is. To tell his own son about him. The man He never told how much he loved and respected. The great, gone wish. Tears. Every time.

Real emotional song this one. Cuts deep. Am now 36, see my dad most weeks but he's severely disabled and now really ill with it. We had such a terrible relationship when my brothers and me were growing up. He was simply a bully. Never to my mum, just us boys. I resented him for it for years. Weve both admitted our wrongs, and now are closer than we have been at all throughout my life.

This is one of those songs that grabs you by the throat, tears your heart to pieces, makes you bawl your eyes out, all the while giving you a sense of hope so that you CALL, WRITE A LETTER, TEXT (NO, DON'T TEXT), DRIVE OVER TO THEIR HOUSE, someone you care about and TELL THEM YOU LOVE THEM !!! The time is NOW, do NOT wait. Pick up your phone and start dialing........

This one has the melody right, the message incredibly right, on the one hand it's very danceable (if that's a word) but sad too...I once listened to No One is to Blame by Howard Jones, and one lyric stuck in my mind - "you're the fastest runner, but you're not allowed to win" - I was in a college sports day, a single heat in the 100 metres, and for some strange reason, I DID finish first, but the teacher at the finish line refused to accept it! So that lyric stuck, you're the fastest runner (and I was, on the day) but you're not allowed to win. This literally happened to me. The teacher was so competitive that he wanted one of his other students to win and go through, and he challenged them about their failure - "What happened guys, we're doing that race again!" - but in doing so, robbed me of winning.

This song jerks the heart and soul 😢 My father passed away in 1970 and i still miss him. Losing Dad was very hard for our family 👪 and now i miss my precious mother who passed away in 2012 . 😢

This is so beautiful..... and then the lyrics alone can make you cry. They have some really wonderful tunes. Mike is one of the founders of Genesis. He is the dad in the views with his son. Too good.

Song inspired by a mutual loss. Both band leader Mike Rutherford and singer Paul Carrack had recently lost their Fathers. This song always brings a tear. It came out the year of my marriage (1988). My wife's father passed at only 51 years old, just weeks before we married. Roll forward to 2017, my Father passed, with my regrets that I never spent enough time with him. We never do. Tell your loved ones how much you love them while they are alive. Afterwards it's too late.

My dad died when I was fourteen, shortly after we lost everything in a once in a century flood...that's the age when you begin knowing your father as a person, not just as "dad"...he was such a complicated person...I missed so much...
