This song always reminds me... you can't know real happiness without also knowing real hurt. It's that space in between that makes that makes all the difference.

Besides the gentle beauty of the song, it still always gets me when every single person in every car gets out and begins to walk together. It’s like everyone was suddenly united.

I love that step down from G to E... "...well hang on," G, F, E "Cos everybody hurts..." It's that 6/8 time, again - a lovely song to fingerpick on guitar. I think Stipe said that it's about surviving high school... As some Russian bloke said "only the soulless have no need for melancholy".

REM is an awesome band and such a great song. We all just need a little time to get together and be a listening ear for each other. That's what the song makes me feel. Mo I'm so sorry about your friend. You can never get over that.

shit. i watched this just before i'm about to leave the house. now i'm about to walk out the door hoping that no one sees my red eyes. this song is brutal and beautiful. the part with the guy praying in his car and then, "why won't you answer me?", just killed me. also the old man pondering, "she's gone". amazing song. edit: i should also say amazing video, because it brought to light in more ways than the song alone could, just how many different ways there are to feel pain and despair.

Such a sadly beautiful and meaningful song. Tears. It helped many, many people 'hold on'. Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush did a duet with a similar theme called 'Don't Give Up'. Equally good. (you will LOVE Peter Gabriel.....try out 'In Your Eyes' you will not be sorry) (oh, and Kate Bush is SPECIAL with many wonderful videos)

Sorry to hear about you losing your friend. It is so hard to understand why it happened and you tend to question yourself wondering what you could have done to help. Even the closest friends can't always change someones mind that feels there is no end to the sadness they feel. I myself have been through it myself, and I am lucky to say that I was strong enough to find a reason to continue on.

That song has a lot of meaning to me after watching my son fight addiction for 20 years. After many times in rehab he just quit on his own because of his 2 year old niece and 10 month old nephew. Twenty years of crying didn’t work, but hearing a 2 year old say…Uncle Mike did it for him. And writing this makes me tear up. Tomorrow we celebrate one year of sobriety with a steak dinner.

R.E.M. as a word it is REM. It has different meanings in different contexts. The one I prefer is Rapid Eye Movement - that time in our sleep when we dream and our eyes look in all directions under the lids. R like Rabbit E like Elephant M like Me. There is not a breath said before saying each letter (in English that is). It is like the first 3 letters of "Remember" "REM". We are all connected. If you feel you have too much pressure, my recommendation is to get involved with someone else and get your mind off yourself. It will heal you. Love your reaction to this very special song. You have a beautiful soul.

The song reflects the sorrow that grips all of us and is a real challenge to living a joyful life. Mo, not so much the song, but the promise that you shared as a reminder that through the true grace of the gospel, we are strengthened with his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy. The pathos is surrendered to the promise.
