Poor kid, he's afraid of expressing his emotions through words because when he says it, it officially becomes reality. A terrifying reality where Eleven is the love of his life, his everything, but if he loses her he loses everything, and he's more afraid than the average teen because he really does love her and knows the feeling of losing her once, so Mike would probably rather give his own life than relive the trauma of losing El again, and so refusing to say he loves her is part of a coping mechanism that helps him deal with his trauma.

Come on they've known eachother in season 1 for a week and kissed after one week of not even really knowing eachother, than eleven came back and after one day the kiss eachother again. In s3 hopper even said that this is too much they are just making out and when he talks to her he doesn't even look like he's in love or sth. It seems like he's pretending. Yeah the sauna scene shows that they have a really good relationship but it doesn't mean that they are deeply in love with eachother. I think they care for eachother but love has to grow it needs time, and they definitely didn't have that. Sorry for my bad english by the way

Notice how Mike apologized for things he was accused of but didn’t even do so they could move past it as a couple. He swallowed his pride because he loved her and wanted her back regardless of who was right or wrong. Even tho, in the end he was clearly right. She got injured and lost her powers as a result. Very admirable of Mike.

Yeah Mike really got treated poorly in Season 3 when in the end, he was right on most accounts. Max framed him as "possessive" not taking into account that El is her own person who wanted to spend time with him too. Their relationship wasn't like Max's, who seemed to break up with Lucas at times just for the heck of it. As a bonus, Max also made fun of the fireworks Lucas grabbed when they turned out to be extremely useful in the finale. Hopper's a grown ass man and he threatened a kid into submission instead of talking it out like an adult should have. Hopper then proceeds to spend the rest of the season going on a wild goose chase with Joyce while also trying to get in her pants, and hardly checks up on Eleven at all. Mike however, was with her all the way. I'm glad Season 4 acknowledged their breakup last season was just silly teenage drama, because they were the least broken up couple ever at the time lol. Now there's the "I love you" dilemma, which I'm sure will be resolved in Volume 2.

@@ericjiang8948 I agree with everything you just said. Mike was definitely rude to Hopper in the beginning but I mean he did follow his rules. I just think he held a grudge because he hid Eleven for 353 days. Out of all people, Mike would’ve never told anyone El was hiding in Hoppers cabin. Hopper even realized this as well as the amount of pain Mike was in and felt bad. He even apologized to Mike after Mike broke down. So Mike being rude to Hopper was really the only thing he was sort of wrong about all season. Even then, with context you understood why. I get why Mike lied to Eleven. Hop threatened him and I don’t think Mike wanted to start a problem between El and Hopper. After all, if Mike and Eleven ever broke up for real, Hop would still be her father. Other than that, Mike did nothing wrong all season. He was right about everything and tried to make up with Eleven at every opportunity. He was the only one to help her while she was getting choked by Billy. Nobody else helped unless they were being attack too. Eleven was kinda always on her own. Hopper and Mike have always been the only two to help Eleven consistently. Lucas helped with fireworks in S3 finale. The list goes on. Point blank, Mike was dragged through the mud in S3 even though he didn’t do anything wrong.

But not Eleven, nor Max, nor Nancy apologized for their treatment of him. This is on Max and Eleven mostly. Eleven in S3- broke up with him over nothing, spied on him, gave him a hard time when he admitted he lied because of hop, didn’t acknowledge the context to why he lied, threw comments she heard while spying back in his face, he saved her life in the first fight against Mind Flayed Billy, he stood up for her to not be used as a weapon, he professed his love for her out loud which she heard, and helped her get a teddy bear from the top shelf of the closet. She never apologized for anything or admitted he was right about her limits. She lost her powers and got injured. But to be fair, she told him she loved him so maybe that enough? Max- made up that mikes lying was malicious, called him a piece of shit, implored her to dump him if she didn’t get an answer for the lying, gaslighted Eleven into thinking Mike thought of her as a pet, gaslighted Eleven into thinking he treats her like garbage, accused Mike of trying to control El, and to top it all off, when at star court mall in the finale. He attacked Billy to stop him from hurting Max without hesitation, which caused him to get knocked out. Max never apologized or admitted he was right. Never thanked him for standing up to Billy for her even tho Max and Mike weren’t on good terms at the time. Mike was clearly the best character in the show in Season 1,2,3.

​@@mikedempsey5750 Facts, generally speaking, Mike's one of the few kids in the show who regularly apologizes for things they've done (whether Mike actually needed to apologize for some of those things is another story, but it shows good maturity on his part regardless). I won't fault Eleven too much for what she did, she was mostly just parroting what Max said, and I have a feeling she didn't really understand the concepts behind what she was saying at times. Plus y'know, she didn't exactly grow up normal, and it's her first relationship. Max on the other hand, got off pretty easy for all the gaslighting and projecting she did with Mike all season. Her relationship with Lucas obviously wasn't anything to write home about at the time, so she didn't have much to go off of on what a healthy one looked like, but even then, making assumptions like he's "possessive" and whatnot is out of line. I get that she might have felt resentment for how Mike treated her in Season 2, but her problems were not El's problems with Mike. Mike lied to her once after her father put the fear of God in him, it's not the same as Max and Lucas breaking up every month. Even in Season 4, people kind of rag on Mike too much because just he can't say the L word as a teenager who's in a rather loveless family. He's shown he loved El so much over the course of the show with his actions, not words. Though at the same time, I get that El also wants the verbal verification, words mean a lot to her. Mike can tell El he loves her but also explain that just because he doesn't say it all the time doesn't mean it's not true to hopefully bridge the gap there. The Mike and Will situation was bad, but also sadly normal for long distance relationships in the 80s. But from the looks of it, it wasn't just Mike, NONE of the Party seemed to keep in touch with Will between S3 and 4, he hardly even gets mentioned by Lucas, Max, and Dustin all season. Yet the fanbase is so fixated on Mike bc Will might be gay for him lol.

Plus Max was a normal teenage girl compared to Eleven. So I’m sure, Eleven wanted to learn more about being a regular teen girl. I actually liked them being friends. I thought it was great to see Eleven with a female friend. I just didn’t like how they went about it. Eleven was copying Max and taking everything she said as gospel. It had a “Girls Rule, Boys Drool” vibe which the Party never treated El or Max different because of their gender. Max totally got off easy but In the grand scheme of things. She suffered as a result. Billy was killed so now she has trauma and depression from that, he also physically knocked her out. So she did get hurt as a result of everything. To Mike’s credit tho, while he initially rejected her, in S2 when she was skateboarding in the gym to impress him, she did fall and he was genuinely worried she was hurt and even helped her up. After that, he was atleast decent with her. They were even smiling at each other before Eleven knocked her off out of jealousy. Which leads me to believe, Mike was coming around on the subject of Max joining the party. So while Max got away with never admitting she was wrong or apologizing, she did ultimately take an L. But I agree with everything you said pertaining to Max, Eleven and Mucas. As for S4, Mike is obviously miserable in High School. He’s still a nerd and still playing D&D. No one knows he has a cute girlfriend with telekinetic and psychic powers. No one knows he’s been fighting Inter dimensional monsters or government agencies since he was 11 or 12. No one knows he’s been directly involved in saving Hawkins 3 times. Eleven lied to him acting like she’s popular with many friends and living this great life without him, the party or Hawkins. Of course dude is gonna be reserved about his feelings. She sacrificed herself to save him and the party, he spent 353 days angry, heartbroken and longing to see Eleven again, come to find out she’s been hidden away within his own town, they get reunited for a few minutes then she has to go risk her life again to save them all. Then he finally sees her at the snowball and they have a great few months of peace before hopper makes him lie causing a chain reaction of events to keep them apart. She breaks up with him. She almost dies fighting billy and mindflayers creature twice. She rejects his attempts to reconcile he needs help with the vending machine. Then they spend the rest of the season battling the mindflayer and then she moves away at the season. How the hell do people expect him to be open with his feelings when every other season they are mostly apart. He was trying to say it in S3 in the grocery store before Dustin interrupted. He blurted it out infront of the party and El heard it. I do have one issue with Mike about the I love you thing tho. Eleven straight up told him she loved him at the end of S3. That was the moment for him to say it as she already said it. Should’ve been the green light to do it. But it’s also Ted and Karen Wheeler’s boy, he’s the product of a loveless marriage so I kinda cut him some slack. But I like all your points and agree with them all. I was losing it reading comments shitting on Mike for the wrong reasons lol. The Will and Mike thing is super hyped up. People shipping Byler are totally cool with ruining a series as long as the gay dude gets his way. I’m all for representation but what I don’t like is pandering. Mike liked Eleven since we’ve known him, now they wanna make him gay? For what? Why can’t Will find another gay character to like? Will wasn’t a good friend in S3 or in S4. In S3, he didn’t give a damn that Mike and Lucas got dumped and cared more about that then a board game they played as children. He guilt tripped Mike about Dustin when they all showed up to surprise Dustin but had to leave early due to Eleven’s request/Hopper curfew. Will even admitted he expected them to always stay the same and never grow. How unreasonable was that. Plus, he called El some stupid girl. You never make comments about a man’s woman. That’s man code. Will forgot they did everything they could to find him in S1 and everything they could to get the mind flayer out of him in S2 where Mike emotionally told him he was his best friend. In S4, Will expects phone calls and letters from Mike while giving nothing in return. He expects reciprocation of feelings he’s never voiced to Mike. He allowed El to be bullied, never got her any kind of help, never gave her advice. He also lied to Mike as well. Will stood there watching El get humiliated at the skate rink. Mike correctly called him out for his behavior and told him their friendship was a two way street. But people want to blame Mike because he’s always right and people hate that. Sorry for the long texts lol.
