Tribute to Mike Tyson's defence, trained by the legendary Cus D'Amato who encouraged Tyson to use the peek-a-boo style, in which the fighter moves his head holds his gloves close to his cheeks and pulls his arms tight against his torso. Mike Tyson, executed the style perfectly and was notorious for his savage punching ability and excellent defense. Probably the best example of the Peek-a-Boo style.

That head movement when he was younger is just magical. I never appreciated this until I started training. We never got to see a Tyson in his prime.

The exact same with me man. I never knew either. Now that I'm a boxer myself, I know good head movement and footwork is the key to winning a bout. Take Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali as examples. Now I strive to hopefully train my head movement and footwork to be even half as good as they were. :)

100% agree. Mike Tyson's style required total discipline and your in peak condition. If you start to get lazy in training, you become a step slower, you are done and become hittable. A lot of people only saw Tyson's power but the real boxing fans knew that he was a scientific fighter. He was also difficult to hit with that pendulum clock-like head movement.
@AgentJ2007
@AgentJ2007 7 жыл бұрын
Great Lakes Yes,you can always find a guy who could hit with KO power. But to find a guy who can hit with KO power and be difficult to hit, that's a rare gem. "unlike Floyd Mayweather pitty pat and run defense." Well, I'm a fan of both type of defences. I just think both defences serve their different purpose. Mayweather's philly shell/shoulder roll is more suited towards counterpunchers whereas tyson's style is suited for shorter fighters and inside fighters. The theory behind the style is that when combined with effective bobbing and weaving head movement, the fighter has a very strong defense and becomes more elusive, able to throw hooks and uppercuts with great effectiveness.

One of the aspects of the genius of Tyson's defense is that it was not a "pure" defense but a defense that combined offensive qualities. Example: Opponent throws a left hook. Tyson ducks the left hook, pivots inside and counters with a left hook to the head. Opponent throws a right cross. Tyson ducks the cross, pivots inside throwing a left to the heart or solar plexus which for a split second drops the opponents guard and then throws a hard right to the opponents kidney or head. Every time the opponent throw a punch, he paid for it. Psychologically, his opponents began questioning themselves prior to throwing anything. And THAT was the beginning of the opponents demise.

Mike was untouchable in his prime. The man was a beast. He was a brutal brute and an amazing defensive evasive fighter as well. Those who say he fought bums are ridiculous, fighting "bums" took him to the title. UNFORTUNATELY he wasn't on his A game with Buster, Evander, and Lennox, etc. Those who know their boxing would know ever since Kevin Rooney was fired, and Tyson went to Don King he declined. He stopped training, doing drugs, marriage issues, and don't get me started with the jail sentence. If he would've stayed disciplined, focused, kept Rooney, no DOUBT in my mind he would've probably went down as the BEST heavyweight EVER. Beaten Marciano's record, went undefeated and slaughtered those who beat him. FACT

That defense is the most over-looked aspect of Tyson's ability in his prime ('86-'88)...and when you consider that his defense was arguably better than any heavyweight fighter before or since, it's enough to make you want to cry when you think of how he tossed it all out the window when he fired Kevin Rooney in '88. If he'd stuck with him, we'd be watching a clip 4 times as long and calling Tyson the greatest of all time without a second thought.

Daniel Joseph Good opinion, but Tyson had trouble with fighters like Mitch Green, James Smith, Tillis and Ribalta when he was with Kevin Rooney. What people seem to forget is that Tyson fought fighters that would make good sparring partners for True champions like Ali. Sammy Scaff? Donnie Long? Who were these fighters? Tyson Lost at the age of 23, and got knocked down in sparring. Tyson was a great Heavyweight no doubt, But Ali would of beaten him. Even Cus and Tyson himself recognised that Ali is the Greatest Heavyweight of all time.

Jayesh Sampat Ali is the GOAT, Now go watch Tyson get owned by Gregg Page in sparring. Did you ever notice that 99% of the fighters that Tyson faced that weren't intimidated KO'd Tyson? Buster and Evander, Lol Ali would desecrated Tyson.
@Smithy07sham
@Smithy07sham 9 жыл бұрын
Jayesh Sampat Your statements have proved to me that you know nothing about boxing. Tinman fanboys are laughingly notorious for offering a litany of excuses as to why he didn't win or performed poorly against Buster. Buster kicked his ass, Evander kicked his ass (twice), and Lennox kicked his ass. His "prime" - apparently 3 years from 85-88 - entailed KO'ng 21 bums & journeymen, the vast majority of whom had more losses than wins & were sparring partners for other above-avg HVW's. When he finally stepped up in class (I.e., Tillis, Green, Smith, Tucker), the KO's diappeared. THESE fights were ALSO in his so-called prime. Btw, Larry Holmes would have KO'd your boy if he had fought him 8 years earlier. Tinman doesn't make most Top 50 HVW's as recorded by historians, other pro fighters, writers, and educated boxing fans. Sorry to burst your little bubble. Ali was never knocked out. Cooper hit him with a left hook due to Ali being overly-confident. When Ali came back out Cooper was doomed. You should google Coopers face after the Ali fight. Ali's prime was from 1965-1967. Ali was unbeatable. Ali destroyed Frazier Twice, He spent rounds with a broken jaw and then came back to beat Norton. He destroyed Foreman. Foreman and Shavers are harder punchers than Tinman Tyson. Ali would desecrate Tyson in 8-10 rounds.
@danieljoseph255
@danieljoseph255 9 жыл бұрын
Smithy07sham From his professional debut in '85, to his last fight with Rooney as his trainer in '88, Tyson was 35-0 with 31 KO's--16 in the first round. I dare say Ali wouldn't have that record against the exact same competition...Ali wouldn't dominate in that fashion, not a chance. He would be 35-0, but forget about the rest. Also, you give absolutely no credit to Tyson and no respect to his opponents when you say he only fought bums. Was Larry Holmes a bum? It's true that he didn't have more than a few months to prepare for Tyson, which Tyson later said himself in an interview. But Holmes was 37 when he fought Tyson and he had his last bout in 2002--14 years later--so it's not as if they wheel-chaired him into the ring. He's a Hall of Fame legend who beat Cooney, Shavers, Norton, Weaver and Muhammed Ali, punishing him until Ali's trainer stopped the fight. He went to 48-0 before he lost to Michael Spinks. Tyson knocked him out in the 4th. And was Spinks a bum in your opinion? Another Hall of Fame boxer? He was 31-0 with 21 KOs when he fought Tyson, and he'd never been down in his entire career...The boxing establishment all picked Spinks...Tyson knocked him down before he knocked him out halfway through the first round (91 seconds). You didn't mention that for some reason.... How bout Trever Berbick? 31-1 when he fought Tyson, also beat Ali...Tyson KO'd him in the 2nd round. Tony Tucker? 35-0 when he fought Tyson...state Hall of Famer Tony Tubbs? TKO in the 2nd round. I know not all of his competition was great--especially in his early career--but no one's is. It's not as if these were close fights. Part of the problem is that Tyson made great boxers, Hall of Famers, look like chumps. His wins were often short and decisive, making his opponents look unimpressive. That's to his credit. What if, instead of Spinks, it was Ali who was 31-0 when he fought Tyson, and got knocked out in 91 seconds...his legacy would be ruined, and people would continue to pathetically assert that Tyson never fought anyone during his short-lived prime dominance. But all competition aside, just watch him fight for Christ's sake...his natural, unmatched strength, combined with Cus and Rooney's training which led to arguably the best defense ever seen in boxing, hand speed, accuracy, lightning combinations, timing, and proven stamina...no one could stand toe to toe with Tyson during those years with Cus and Rooney. No one. And yes, Tyson said Ali was the greatest...but Ali said Tyson was the greatest in 1988. I still think Ali is the "greatest" of all time, considering his entire career, but I believe Tyson was the "best" of all time, because I believe that in his short prime he could've beaten any boxer of any era. And as Rooney said: "If Mike had stayed with me, he would've stayed out of trouble, he would've gone 90-0, and he would've gone down as the greatest of all time.

3:15 to 3:21. As good as the bullet dodging scene in Matrix. God what a talent Mike Tyson was. I wish he controlled his personal life better in his young age. Maybe then he would have ended up being called the best sportsperson that ever lived. To the guy who posted this video "Take a bow sir".

There's plenty of heavy hitters and there's plenty of stratigic fighters but no one had ever combined perfect strategy and virtually super human power the way Mike Tyson did and no one ever will again.

probably the only person to ever TRULY MASTER every aspect of the game...I hate when ppl don't give Mike the credit he deserves... and when he reigned supreme in the eighties he didn't trash talk ANYONE... he didn't have to trash talk to sell fights... his skill alone sold fights... unlike other fighters who trash talk and build up a hype train... Mike didn't have to... when Mike fought your neck hairs stood on end because you knew the human equivalent of a shark attack was about to take place... masterful violence...

lol funny how there's no hating comments here like you would find everywhere else. Thats right stay quiet, and just acknowledge a level of skill and talent. I love all the great boxers they all have their own merits, but tyson was exciting to watch. His offense was his defense, he moved his head more than ali really.

8:20 they scary thing about Mike Tyson is when he curls up like that his arms are so big you can't get a clean body shot and he has his gloves up in front of his face while bobbing weaving that fast. All the while his opponents entire body is exposed in comparison. Just by looking at hum and then at his opponent. It's like he is in a turtle shell only popping out of it to throw a punch and constantly moving toward you with defense this solid. His hands were always close to his opponents hands and face even in defence and the way he constantly moved left right up down while allowing his head and shoulder to rotate with him just gave him so many angles to attack from that his opponents defense looked dang near non-existent. That is a scary fighter

Mike Tyson is my Idol and I'd say he was one of the most (if not the most) feared boxers in his prime. I saw the look on Richard Spinks..... If Tyson didn't fire Kevin Rooney and didn't allow Don King to brainwash him, he would of never regressed as a fighter after Cus D'Mato's death. Plus the wife took control of his personal life which made things worse

is that Mike Tyson hits so hard and trained so hard just like his life as a kid was hard and we don’t know what else could’ve happened to him that stays in his memories. So when he hits he hits you with all the pain he’s felt all his life. No one boxer has ever struggled as Mike Tyson did as a child and that’s why he’s the hardest hitter.

There are certain body parts we can't train though heavy weight boxers hit so much harder. Heavy weight boxers take more risk for retinal detachment, brain damages (CTE), and many other permanent injuries. We only see champions who were good at defense like Mike but there are tons of boxers who had to retire for it.
