Nintendo's final release for 1987 is one for the ages: A conversion of minor arcade hit Punch-Out!! So how do you port a cutting-edge arcade game to a console that launched a year before the coin-op machine without losing its essence? If you're Nintendo, you create a fancy new microchip specifically for the task; you radically overhaul the game to emphasize precision and readability; and you enlist the support of the most popular athlete in the world. It's a combo that's hard to top-and the results were so strong that it still holds up even without the endorsement of Mike Tyson.
Special thanks once again to Steve Lin and the Video Game History Foundation (www.gamehistory...) this episode!
Video Works is funded through Patreon ( / gamespite ) - support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its KZbin debut! And be sure to check out the Retronauts podcast (www.retronauts.com), where I (and many others!) tackle a much wider array of classic gaming topics each week.

Punch-Out is just a joy to play, I've been a fan of every iteration of it. The knockouts are just so... satisfying. My favorites are the ones where they spin a few times before collapsing, (its just a reversing sprite, but the sound effect and timing of it work sooooo great) and when you gut punch them and knock them back, flying into the corner. Ref Mario's muffled "TKO" is like a dopamine trigger for me. And yeah, having mac literally punch up to his massive opponents really does give you this great human vs titans feel that makes your victories all the more sweet. I love this game is what I'm saying.

Punch-Out!! is a timeless classic. It's also a fun game to play with goofy NES controllers like the Power Glove, and most notably fun with the U-Force. It's one of the first NES games I've introduced to niece and nephews, cousins, my friend's kids, anyone younger who has any interest in videogames. What's brilliant about it is that you don't need to be a boxing fan at all to enjoy it. It's more about rhythm than any boxing skill. Jeremy, I hope you'll use the jingle I send you in future videos! Small aside, but as an Indian, I'm really impressed by how Nintendo handled Great Tiger in Wii Punch-out. The Hindi voice work is shockingly solid, and his quips are actually him saying the direction of his moves (hinting on how Lil Mac should attack). There's even a small "insult", which was a little out of character from usual Wii era Nintendo games, although no one outside Hindi speakers would actually get it. For a parody characters, a lot of attention to detail is given. I wish same could happen for actual Indian characters (which in themselves are extremely rare to find...)

Next Level didn't skimp on the acting. Every boxer had an actor who represented the ethnicity of the character's background (well, except King Hippo... since, they decided to say nobody had any clue where the heck he was from and he was repackaged as a large, lumbering, unintelligent brute), instead of just hiring someone to do a fake accent. They even snuck in a few swears with Bald Bull and Soda Popinski.

Kind of surprised Power Punch II with (heh) Mark Tyler wasn't mentioned. It's a pretty obvious knock-off of Punch Out!! with intergalactic fighters. I'm stunned Nintendo let that one slip by them, and even gave it their seal of approval. Also, I like that Little Mac is so small. It gives the game a David and Goliath feel, making the other fighters more intimidating and your victories against them more significant. It isn't JUST that you brought down Mike Tyson in his prime. You did it with a man half his size!

More than any other, this game highlights the difference between the NES and the Sega Master System. The SMS was more powerful than the NES in every way, but Nintendo's developers were much more creative about navigating the restrictions of their machine. Had Punch-Out been a Sega game, the Master System port would have retained the wireframe of the arcade, and been rendered a flickering, unplayable mess because of it.

What Nintendo was, and has become is an incredible story. Looking at it, its like part time possible gangster, owner of several love hotels, gets wrapped up in computer science and video games as the new vice, hires a bunch of smart kids and an old engineer, who make art projects with new computer chip technology. They got noticed by the other big tech companies like Sony, Ricoh, IBM and build partnerships, all trying to out perform each other without stepping on each others toes. At that level of big money moves, that's economy shifting in some area at the time of those decisions. I wonder what the political or economic impact Nintendo, close 3rd party partners like HAL, etc. have had on chip manufacturing, or miniaturization, and some of the other technologies Nintendo was looking at.

It seems as though Mr. Parish has been caught cheating LOL. In all fairness, being able to beat Tyson is no easy feat. It has eluded me up until recent years, where I came to learn that you can speed up your dodge recovery by tapping the d pad in the direction opposite of the dodge. Finally managed to beat the game in one sitting 14-0, 14 KO. Happy days.

Oh, absolutely. I turned on a half-damage cheat code for this footage, because I'm AWFUL at this game and needed to get footage of at least the first two circuits in order to make this video. I look forward to you exploring The Goonies II. Konami had a weird obsession with the Goonies, such as making a Japanese-exclusive action game and even featuring Mikey in an "all-stars" NES game starring Konamiman, but I guess this was due to them having the license. I actually fell in love with the game years before I finally got to play it thanks to the Official Nintendo Player's Guide, which was that black book you got that gave you tips, but it was full of literal Japanese translations (not Engrish, but it would suggest things that didn't make sense or would not be featured in the actual games, such as how Simon's Quest had "rivers of blood" or the Amazon in Pro Wrestling used weapons)… and yet, it took me ages to remember this game since I had little access to the internet and my knowledge of the NES library was scarce after I had forgotten about that very book. The irony that the book also covered Metroid, and I gravitated towards the licensed Metroidvania was odd, but I thought the way Ma Fratelli's fortress layout and all the power-ups you found were fascinating. And then... the game has a very mixed reception online. A NES archival site ranked it as one of the worst games of all-time. But, another one praised it as a hidden gem. To be frank, there are things that hurt the game, such as the lives system and the confusing way you move through the "front" and "back" of the fortress, not to mention the first-person segments. But, I look forward to you discussing the game that replaced Sloth with a mermaid.

Sorry but Midway's Ready to Rumble game was NEVER as fun or as memorable as the NES Mike Tyson's Punch Out! or even the vanilla sequel. The main flaw with the Super Nintendo Super Punch Out! game was that although it did not need any celebrity boxing endorsement, the game despite having more content did lack some of the sauce that made the NES version very special and memorable and it was a problem that could have been fixed if Nintendo had commissioned a SNES Super Punch Out! 2 where they might have been able to address these issue because the Super Nintendo hardware was indeed capable and very fast despite the clock speed on the surface but of course the other problem is that around 1993 just too many companies were attempting to force their brand new next gen hardware which only led to Nintendo and Sega having to keep up which is history as many seem to take the Super Nintendo generation for granted even though it just did not have the same year count as the first half of the NES.

Bringing up Punch-Out's use as a testing bed for display lag and such is very correct. The game is still what I use to test any sort of emulator or TV. I dread the day my CRT TV dies and I can no longer play Punch-Out well enough. Punch-Out got a lot of great coverage in the last few issues of Nintendo Fun Club Newsletter and was still showing up in Game Counselors sections in Nintendo Power proper shortly after. Doc telling Mac to join the Nintendo Fun Club probably makes no sense to anybody that wasn't around in 1987 for that short pre-Nintendo Power gap in time.

yeah, the NES classic has a very small amount of lag, but it does have lag. I think i saw it tested by another youtuber and he was getting like 1 to 1.5 frames of lag.

Kevin Driscoll It’s possible, just adjust your reflexes. I think what people mean when they say can Mike Tyson be beaten on modern hardware?, is that they want to know if it is any harder. Not really, if you learn the timing (originally for me on Nestopia, a NES emulator) you can learn it on any device, regardless of input or suchlike. It’s not a significant difference.

I hope next week's episode proves or disproves my conspiracy theory that The Goonies 2 was part of a sequel movie that got canned

Takes me back to my brothers, myself, and our friends huddled around the TV passing the controller around as we all tried to beat this game together. I remember doing the same with Legend of Zelda and Goonies II. It was like conquest by committee, surely enough brains put together in one room could eventually figure it out, right? Hahaha.

".high quality hd emulation solution like the NES Classic..." Hmmm... I thought the NES Classic wasn't well regarded for its emulation accuracy.

It's good enough for this game to be playable, which makes it acceptable.

Punch Out was one of the first games I owned on NES, my father being very into sports thought it was a good compromise between his love of sports and my love of gaming. Still one of my favorite titles to this day and I generally play it at least a couple times a year, always surprised my skills haven't rusted. Looking forward to the next NES Works a lot after that preview. Goonies 2 was a staple of my childhood gaming rentals and while it was definitely flawed still brings up a lot of fond memories.
