Lennox is about 9 month's older. Saying Tyson is old at the time is false. At the time everyone knew Mike would beat him. Now saying Tyson was washed up is down playing how great Lewis was.
@divinity1767 күн бұрын
That isn't really a fair comparison though - they were the same age but their eras are half a generation apart. Tyson basically peaked at 20 which is freakishly young. Tyson was 15 years past caring at this point and was just jumping at people because he wasn't putting the work in to be able to build a fight over 12 rounds. In any case, I would pick a form Lewis to beat a form Tyson - I just don't think this fight was a good representation of it. Just the same as I would have picked Mayweather over Pacquiao, but I don't think we ever really got that fight in the real sense either.

Tyson had (50 wins 44/KO). Lewis had (42 wins, 32/KO). Tyson was the youngest Heavyweight Champion in history at 20yrs old. He regained back the title of Heavyweight Champion of the World from Michael Spinks with a KO in 90 seconds. He never trained or even slept before the Lewis fight he was out partying all night with 14 women. He fought 12 rounds without breaking a sweat. His opponents didn't last more than a few rounds. If you watch the fight Lewis had with Holyfield you can hear Lewis tell the ref that Holyfield was ramming his head into him repeatedly. That's why Mike finally bit him. Mike has a permanent scar over his right eye still today from Holyfield head butting him. There's a reason Lewis & Holyfield waited until 2002 to fight him. They would have lost to him back then. Cus D'Amato was known as the best trainer around. Tyson was not street fighting in the ring but it did contribute to his success. He followed the rules. Incidentally, he never raped the girl that accused him. Tyson was a legendary fighter with a unique fighting style that was the best I've ever seen. If you watch the You Tube videos of his fights you'll see he was in a category all his own.
@dirtyandnasty9011 Жыл бұрын
The problem is Tyson fought mostly cab drivers but Lennox had most of his fights against big names, so the KO ratio is biased. As for "prime" Tyson, Lennox already got his number in sparring in the 80's , check Arnie Boehm's interview about this. That's why Tyson always answered in front of cams "I'm not ready for Lennox Lewis yet." He knew he could never beat him, prime or not.

Speed, movement, energy, style, in Mike's first 5 years he mowed down guys like Lewis, no matter how tough, he never got hit this much and his movement and speed, both hand and body was superb, not way Lewis would have beat him in his prime, I could not stand Mike at the time, because he was so cocky, I love him now, have been a boxing fan my whole life, Mike was the best ever in my book, even though my man through all those years was Evander, but Evander would not have beat him in those first five years either.

I watched the Douglas/Tyson fight live years ago. Watched this old replay at least 3 years ago. Lewis had the longest reach of any heavyweight ever. His Jab was a power hammer and at 250 pounds had lightning speed! Tyson even in his prime would have had to land an early round knockout to win against a opponent like Lewis. Love and respect both fighters. Frazier,Ali,Foreman, Lennox against those warriors would have been epic

All this talk about Lewis being smart, using his jab etc. The fact is Tyson was just a shadow of the fighter he was. At this stage in his career he could have been beaten by worse fighters than Lewis. He was in it for the money his heart and desire long gone. Lennox Lewis would have lost against Mike when he was at his peak. Even in this fight it took him 8 rounds for a knock out. Mike had chin unlike Lewis.

@Matt Barber tyson had been under the pressure of the spotlight for a long time before Lewis and took it's toll on him way earlier than it should have. Mike Tyson beat himself...put both in their prime at the same age and Tyson hands down would have won, he had lost his passion and himself long before this fight.

Lennox should have been disqualified: excessively clamping himself to the opponent; his trademark. This way he takes the angle out of his opponent and can relax by leaning comfortably on..yes..that same opponent. Tyson not do explosive and fast anymore but he’s always been a boxer that needs to get close to the other to compensate his shorter reach, and then he’s still dangerous. This is why Lennox keeps clamping the whole time. A champion unworthy
