The Pulp story needs to be a movie. A bunch of friends plays in a band for 15 years with next to no success (So much that the singer went to university to pursue filmmaking in his late 20's) then they suddenly make an album with a hit and then in making this album they get invited to play the biggest concert in the UK as a replacement and it goes down as one of the best Glastonbury performances of all time where they close with common people

I think this is possibly my favourite song of all time. I saw Pulp live a lot in the 1990s and they were always incredible. And this sums up being quite poor (which I was at the time) while other people are on trust funds etc. and never have to worry about money. And it's just so damn catchy. Disco 2000 (which is an homage to Gloria) is also a great Pulp song, and a nice contrast, about a girl who's poor, but is just so damn sexy that all the boys love her.
@ChrisPage683 жыл бұрын
I think we've all had one of those kind of people in our lives - people who think it's "hip" to pretend to be working class, without all the crap that comes with it. I was at college in the 80s with one of them. He was one of those "armchair revolutionary with nothing to rebel against" types, but his accent gave his background away. And his most annoying affectation was ending almost every sentence with "yeah?". 🤦 🤣 😂
@colinbrown73053 жыл бұрын
The song is about a class divide between the working class and upper middle class who like to slum it for a while and like to pretend that they understand what it's like to be working class. Listen to the full version of the song. It's a song that defined an era in Britain.

This is one of my husband’s favourite songs. He always says it is like me and him. And I have to admit, it really is in so many ways. So he is from a typical Yorkshire family, working class, he left school and immediately went to work with his father in construction. In contrast, my father ‘is loaded’ like the song says, he made a lot of money through various businesses and I was brought up in increasingly larger houses as his wealth increased. My husband only ever lived in one house, and his parents still live there. (Which I think is really nice by the way. There is such a strong sense of community where he grew up) I went to university got a degree and became a teacher. (I really do have a thirst for knowledge, but actually, so does he, he’s just far too impatient to sit down and study for the qualifications!) And most significantly, the first line so relates to us because the first time we met, I lived in Greece and he was on holiday! We dated for 2 years even though I was living in Greece, and he was in the UK, and finally we got married and both moved to live in Greece together. Just thought I’d share that with you. Hope I didn’t ramble on too much. Loved your reaction video and the fact that you like the song a lot.

Never has a song been so catchy while also being really savage in its social critique. And the video is the perfect realization of the lyrics. The song is an anthem of those who will never rise above a certain level in British society, and really when all is said is done, would prefer to remain where they are. These days Sleaford Mods mine the same territory of cheek, bile, and razor sharp dissection of the class system.

Jarvis comes from my city, Sheffield UK. His poetry is on several building walls. Brilliant song.
@gigmcsweeney8566 Жыл бұрын
The song is based on a real person, Danae Stratou, who is now married to Yiannis Varoufakis, who was the Greek Minister of Finance during the Greek economic crisis in 2007-2008. Stratou had moved to London to study art at Central St. Martins, where she met Jarvis Cocker, who was also a student there, and he wrote the song about her. By the way, Jarvis is considered a legend in the UK, and not only for his brilliant music, but because he once crashed the stage while Michael Jackson was performing 'Earth Song' at the 1996 Brit Awards in London, waving his arse at the audience while Jackson continued his Jesus impersonation. Jarvis was eventually hauled off stage and arrested. It was another moment of brilliance in his amazing career as a British cultural icon, though he later claimed the incident had a detrimental effect on his mental well-being, as it launched him into a level of fame he wasn't prepared for. As a side note, Jarvis was eventually let off without charge, after David Bowie came to his rescue with his own footage of the incident, as their had been false claims Jarvis knocked a child over while on the stage.

I think this all just adds to the song's appeal. Not only are you getting a super catchy sing-and-dance-along 90s anthem, you've also got the common people's protest march hiding in plain sight, openly deriding what might in this day-and-age be referred to as 'poverty safari tourists'.
