Sounds like Obsidian just needs to get better, or maybe have a baby with Notion, and then it would be what I am looking for. I.e. A productivity & knowledge app that is designed to store your data locally, or on a [local] NAS storage device you own, so we don't have to worry about e2e encryption (just https and local storage encryption), to store all "notes" one takes in life digitally (learning, research, projects, etc). Oh, and be cross-platform!

All of them are good for note taking, organizing and reviewing. Have tried all of them together with anki and quizlet. But what made me transfer to Remnote is the ability of it to make flash cards at the get go. Since time is very important and is limited especially in college, being able to organize your notes and review immediately using active recall is definitely a must.

Obsidian technically has a very open and flexible collaboration capability. Because the underlying "vault" sits on top of a file directory you can achieve the following: - access on mobile via something like Ulysses or IA writer. - collaborate with others by storing a vault in a cloud file storage solution or even github - collaborators can choose whatever markdown editor they are comfortable with so if they don't like obsidian they could collab and spend their whole time in Ulysses or IA writer

From my opinion, Roam cons are: 1- you may lose data since many users report that. 2- it is not sustainable since they ask for $15 per month. RemNote cons are: 1- small bugs there and here are a lot. 2- the layout looks not smooth. 3- They don’t have active community. Obsidian cons are: only they don’t have block referencing, but they the option that I have chosen because: 1- free 2- local 3- great graph view.

I 100% agree with your points, however, the biggest con for me with Obsidian is that it feels awkward to use. The systems own "friction" was something I never overcame and that caused me to use it far less than I would have liked. Roam seems to have removed all of the friction for me and a tool that I love to use trumps nearly everything for me. I will pay for a good tool, and I am sure over time with their level of success they will address the bugs/data loss. (I actually had dataloss and spoke with the founder himself about the issue, they do care and are trying to address how quickly they are growing).

Boy, you guys are everywhere. It took me until 8 minutes into this video (after watching a number of others) to hear that RemNote has no app. It is online only and therefore my data is not secure, personal, or private. That is too bad. It seemed interesting but going back to the early 1970s world of hosted timeshare computing is not my cup of tea. It boggles my mind that anyone would put the work into a new app and then not let me download it. All of that said, you guys do a good job of comparing apps. Obviously no one in their right mind would get involved with Roam ... as soon as I found out their pricing model I removed the free version from my PC. Who would even waste the time learning an app with that kind of rapacious business model? At the moment I'm learning Obsidian and it seems to do the job for me. We shall see. :)

I moved from Roam to Obsidian a few months ago. I still have a Roam account but never use it. Obsidian is really cool, getting better daily and is the best option for the confidentiality of my notes and the notes and the therapeutic notes I make on my clients. Having the ability to have several (often 5) windows open of different pages far outshines roam. Recent updates mean to me there is nothing that I need in Roam anymore. Obsidian is a winner for me. I started looking at these apps after researching zettelkasten method. I’m primarily using iPad Pro so notion is big nope (their mobile app is not very good in managing notes). ROAM sounds awesome and I tried trial, but 15$/month is just too much for me at a time. So I ended up with Rem Note and never looked back. I personally like it even more then roam. It truly feels like a “tool”, not app. No flashy graphics, everything extremely basic and straight to the point. My brain instantly switches to work mode when I see the interface. Took some work to learn all features, but it is worth it!

Useful review. I've been experimenting with note-taking systems since the '70s, and always end up back with Buzan-style mindmaps. Mapping forces you to process the incoming knowledge proactively as you work out the associations you want and try to make sense of the ideas. Plus the keywords and graphical nature of the approach assist with overview. And good mindmapping software allows for linking between maps and nodes. These associative apps aren't a new idea - see TheBrain, for example, which has been around for years. But they are very text dense, and don't force you to process your thinking or to create overview, and you end up with a very loosely organised web of atomic snippets. In the end, all knowledge is hierarchical - mindmapping and associative noting are both based on outlining under the hood. The question is, which encourages the clearest, most efficient thinking habits? For me, it's mindmapping all the way.

I will say I am biased towards Notion at the start of this comment. When you say Notion struggles with spaced repetition and flashcards I respectfully disagree, it is possible in Notion using databases. I have a video on my channel showing that. Bio linking I agree is not in Notin typically but you can link between pages inline text and other blocks or pages of databases using the copy link feature. The sidebar is a good point, for me I have two screens so that is my workaround. Overall I think Notion has greater versatility in more areas which is my preference but the other apps definitely have advantages over Notion. Great video for comparison and I am excited to see where the apps go!

Hey Danny, thanks for the insightful comment! Very cool how you stress effective study methods in Notion as well. The reason we say RemNote is superior is the native development of spaced repetition into the program itself. I think removing friction of setting up flashcards and get studying is really important. Obsidian for Personal Knowledge Management + Notion for Productivity 🙌
@GarlandCoulson4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your well thought out comparisons. As a time management coach, I am always looking for and trying new productivity tools. I had used Notion extensively, am currently trying Roam and had tested Obsidian, but prefer an online version. Hadn't tried RemNote yet, so I will look into it.

@@KoiAcademy Thanks guys! I am currently testing RemNote by using it for all my notes this week. One thing I liked about Roam Research is how it automatically created pages when I put in a topic. I assume I would use Tags on RemNote to replicate this functionality? Also Roam was very focused on a daily focus, but with RemNotes ability to create folders and documents, do you still find creating a document for each day useful?
@KoiAcademy4 жыл бұрын
@@GarlandCoulson Yes, every single bullet point you make in RemNote automatically becomes its own page, just click on the bullet to jump into that page. And yes, our favorite way to use RemNote is the daily document (daily focus). Whenever you create a new document in the sidebar next to "Document" you will automatically create a new document with today's date on it. Def recommend checking this tutorial series as well, you will find that RemNote and Roam are more similar than most people think: bit.ly/RemNoteTutorials

I have to use Notion at work, but for my private projects I prefer to use Workflowy - been addicted to it since January.
@KoiAcademy4 жыл бұрын
thanks for sharing! Workflowy is great :) It shares a lot of commonality with RemNote, Roam, and Obsidian as well in regards to tree-notetaking

Can you please make an updated video of this? I like the idea of separating PKM and Productivity apps. They overlap and also serve different purposes. Considering craft and logseq are the latest new apps, it would be good if you feature them as well based on these parameters you have covered in this video.
@damandarin54159 ай бұрын
We need an update video on all these softwares - excluding Notion as I feel like it has become its own thing now, and maybe not ROAM because it costs so much

When using Remnote, would it be more effective to take notes straight from the textbook into Remnote, or from the textbook to Notabillity and then into Remnote? I'm sure both have their upsides and downsides but I'd be interested to hear what you guys prefer doing :) Regards:: Mantis
@KoiAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mantis :) that’s a tricky question since Notability notes are handwritten. RemNote (or any of the apps we discuss in this video) won’t be able to search for handwritten text. I’d say that if you can get a PDF version of your textbook and take notes with RemNote that way, it would be faster because you can take screenshots and paste them into RemNote. And for notability, you’ll have to export as images and then paste them into RemNote. I have to do this step since I also use notability in class. I then try to summarize everything before transferring to RemNote for very focused and well organized flash cards
@AlexRider56014 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, must say I love the professionalism of your videos, I’m finding them really informative and can’t wait for more. When school starts back up again, I’ll continue using Notability in my classes for sure. I have been using screenshots into Remnote from a PDF textbook for chemistry and it's been super easy to take screenshots of photos and diagrams and paste them into Remnote within seconds, making great flashcards. I have another question, what is the use of the 'Latex' option with the funky looking letters, is that for sub and superscript? How do you get sub and superscript in the app, is there a way to do that?
@KoiAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Latex would be be the option for subscripts at the moment. Personally I don’t have much experience using Latex (I study medicine and we don’t need to write complex math equations haha) so I couldn’t speak more on how to use it. I know many community members could def help you out there :) but we are considering adding more modifiers to Rem to include those features in the future!

Thanks for the video. I found RoamResearch presently but just before this video I watched another video about Obsidian and I thought I should go with it. However, after watching your video, I found RemNote very interesting, particularly for their active recall space repetition cards which I love. In addition to that, it is free. I haven't checked RemNote yet but from what I saw in this video, I find Roam's design sleeker. I don't know if they updated anything since you made the video but RemNote has an older design look than Roam. I can live with that.

Personally, I think notion is good for tracking things, and the rest of whatever you wanna do is outside notion. Particularly, I agree that remnote is a good note taking app since I discovered it and I like the simplicity of it. I will be using this once school starts next year.

I was, and in some ways still am, a big Notion fanboy. But the app just feels sluggish. As a result, I always hesitate to log notes there, especially when I'm on my phone. After recently learning about Zettelkasten, I also discovered Obsidian, and I love it. Sure it doesn't have all the fancy features of Notion, but all the files are stored locally, as Markdown, so I can transport them anywhere. With features like Latex Equations and Mermaid Charts, it's a great app that's also simple and snappy. For an app that just came out a couple months ago, and with the speed at which they are developing, I'm confident it will continue to become better.
