I'm old. I'm 75. Not only have things changed a lot in many ways during my life, I've also been in many places. When I was a kid, you probably weren't even born yet. Things I observed you had nothing to do with and probably your parents didn't either. So don't think I'm blaming you or your family for anything. It's just the way things were. You are a young American black man. Back when I was a kid, a young American black man would never have your vocabulary, ease in talking, or suggestions to make things better for others. You come across as bright, upright, experienced, and helpful. You come across as my equal as a human being and possibly my superior as a linguist and teacher. Perhaps you can imagine and perhaps you can't, but back then a young black guy couldn't imagine putting out a video to help others learn something. Either the concept of doing so, the ability to do so, or the audacity to do so. He'd have been afraid of how it would be taken, by whom, and how dangerous it would be for him. I don't know if you keep a genealogical journal or something, but your peers and those young ones coming up should realize how amazing you and your generation are, and how you have excelled in ways that are unlikely and almost unthinkable to your ancestors. You probably don't even think about it. But to me you appear to be an example of how the intelligent and energetic parts of a less than perfect past can bloom into a source for hope and positive transformation for the future. I'll enjoy learning what you have to share. Thank you.

@Heaven & Hell Testimonies Thank you for asking! I had gotten a little frustrated there with my progress and just stopped cold turkey, but then I got motivated when it occurred to me that I needed you read aloud in Spanish. That has helped. I think I've had a fear that I couldn't do it and when I was put on the spot to translate for somebody, I would totally freak out and shut down. Then I realized later that I DID understand what had been said. But last Sunday at church, there were two women from Venezuela who came but understood no English. I just shifted gears and I flowed naturally. I didn't even realize what I had done until I got home. I was in shock! 😳 I even introduced them to the app called, "Language Transfer" which teaches English for Spanish speakers. They were so happy. 😃 That was a first and it will not be the last time that I do that. I just need to take the pressure off of myself.

Grammar practice: Make your own sentence Listening practice: Listen to dramas because you can hear how the language is naturally spoken. Never listen to dubbed content because the translations are usually wrong and you can see how the native speakers express themselves. Especially if the language is from a different language family than your first language. Reading: Short stories or a guide that has reading content from A1 to C2 Conversations with educated native speakers that have had 12 years of school or Non- native speakers that have been certified to teach the language by a recognized institution.

@@utubedude2842 Yes, it is fantastic. Even after 2 months of listening to Kieran Ball (and doing things like Duolingo that I won't count), it was very beneficial to start at page 1 and do every single exercise/translation/conjugation that the book requests. Every sentence in that book is put there carefully. You immediately respect it and want to do everything it asks. I am amazed and proud at your advancement in the Spanish language. I started learning Spanish back in 1987/88 with an Elementary Spanish textbook and achieved a substantial vocabulary. The only problem today is, right now, at age 57 that is all I have. I mean I can speak a little but I certainly can read and write much better. I kept quitting all the time because, having College English behind me, my brain was stubborn. I had to know the answers to many Spanish grammar questions and, during those times, couldn't find anyone to answer them. I was too grammar focused instead of focusing on listening and speaking first. I had no excuse. Although they did not have Italki back then, there were a lot of Spanish speaking people around me. I thank you for this video. Now, at age 57, I will take what I have learned and your recommendations to start applying it to speaking and listening. This post needs to be an encouragement for everyone reading it. GRAMMAR NEEDS TO COME AFTER YOU LEARN TO LISTEN AND SPEAK FIRST. Then, grammar will start to explain what you have been listening too and what you are speaking. Of course, if they prioritize and learn grammar, read, write, listen and speak everyday as you did, that will work as well. ¡Sigan con el buen trabajo!

I just started using duolingo since my girlfriend is majoring in spanish, but after hearing what u said I will be swapping to other methods ASAP. I haven't watched any language videos in the past but this has to be one of the most in depth amazing videos i've watched on this platform in awhile. You seem really passionate about learning the language and mastering it, even with three jobs buying tutoring and all these books, listening to it in the car etc. I know this video is now almost 3 years old but i hope your journey has been and continues to go well !

Duolingo isn’t bad for a beginner. It’s good for reading, for introducing one to new vocabulary, writing, making sentences and listening skills. But, it is to get your feet wet in the Spanish language, not to get you fluent in it. I’ve learned a lot from Duolingo.

Muchas gracias por este video Mike. Cuándo empecé aprender español el año pasado, tu video fue un del primer que ví, y utilizé muchos consejos que compartía. Me he estudiado español ahora por casi un año (351 días) y el viaje fue increíble. Puedo tener conversaciones con nativos, leer, escribir, y entender español muy bien. Considero mi nivel ser intermedio (B1/2). Muchísimas gracias por haciendo este video y continúe siendo una inspiración para otras personas que desean aprender un idioma nuevo.🤙🏽

After many years of speaking Spanish, I decided to create a resource similar to the ones that I discussed in this video to help those that are learning Spanish just like I have. With that said, I have written a guide to learning the Spanish language that is an accumulation of all that I've learned from each of these resources. This book is different, however, because it is created by a native English speaker, for native English speakers. Many of the books that I mentioned here were great, but they left me guessing when it came to certain topics in Spanish. With that said, this book does the opposite. Everything is explained clearly so that you can begin speaking, writing, listening, and reading Spanish as soon as possible. Consider giving it a try here: www.amazon.com/Mike-Bens-Guide-Learning-Spanish/dp/B0C8RBK7W8/ref=sr_1_1?crid=SXX96MLDWJGD&keywords=mike+ben%27s+guide+to+learning+spanish&qid=1692400133&sprefix=mike+bens%2Caps%2C147&sr=8-1

I'm currently doing research to kickstart an ultralearning project to study a language, and came across this video. Your outline is incredibly helpful to breakdown what you did to develop a basis of the language in the first couple of months of your progress, especially hearing about your experience with iTalki. I also think that it also helped immensely knowing that you did this all, working 65-70 hours a week. A lot of times when I aim to place benchmarks/goalposts and identify how people managed to learn a language in a set amount of months, often times it's a university student that can afford more time to deep dive into language learning during semester break, or someone with flexible working hours. For someone that is working full-time and then add part-time study on top of that, it definitely felt disheartening. So it helps to know that learning a language is totally achievable, even when you've got a ton of commitments and responsibilities. Wishing you all the best in all your future endeavours, and thanks again for posting this vid!

People all learn differently to some extent so there's no "this is exactly what you do" for everyone. So, I keep it pretty simple. I make sure to practice everyday and part of that is just setting a realistic bare minimum for yourself that would just be ridiculous to try talking yourself out of, like listening to one song in Spanish when you first wake up or something like that. It may be small but it's a simple thing you can commit to, acts as a reminder, and gets you started practicing for the day. I can't count how many days I've woken up and gotten pumped to keep learning after doing my first bit of practice that morning. Otherwise, I just think about language learning in three steps: 1. Reading/understanding foundational grammar 2. Listening to learn vocabulary 3. Speaking to practice recall of words and grammar(and pronunciation) Within these three steps you have all the freedom you need to read, listen, or talk to or about whatever you like and keeps you interested, and the simplicity of it keeps you from being able to justify not practicing and just makes it as easy as it can beat. If you don't understand something you just go back to the root grammar and try your best but some things just take time and just listening to the language and making the necessary mistakes when talking is the most efficient and effective way.

Thanks for the tips! It’s amazing how you’ve set your mind to learning a language despite working so many hours! I’m a stay at home mom so this really gives me hope. My mom is from Colombia but unfortunately I never learned Spanish. In high school I took French so I really need start with the basics. My grandparents just came to the states for a visit and are begging us to visit them in Colombia. I’d love to go but wouldn’t be able to communicate with many relatives. This has really inspired me to finally learn. I just picked up the first book you recommended. I had also started listening to the same audio lessons on Spotify and YT that you mentioned. Thanks for all the extra info! I’ll check out some of those resources.
