Hi. To get the best from your image file a bit of post production work usually has to be done to tweak colours, brighten / darken some areas etc. In the days of film this was done by a lab when your negative was printed. With digital you do it yourself.

Good choice of subject; my belief is that it the prettier contrasts usually win out, which I preferred myself in this case. Great to see 'hands on' & 'walkthrough' photography. More photographers need to see this type of video instead of reviews or overly scripted and lacking information stuff like DigitalRev (different audience perhaps); I do like a chuckle myself though. Very informative and useful.

You're right there isn't much difference in image quality and on a landscape like this no impact on depth of field at all. I suggest F11 because lenses always work best at middle apertures - though as you say the difference on most lenses is virtually imperceptible. - Mike

Hi - A small aperture wouldn't change the bright highlights because they will always be in proportion to each other regardless of aperture used. I used a middle aperture of about f11. The photos look different because I shot them as RAW files then did a bit of work on them after the shoot. See part 2. Cheers... Mike

Hi - It's the final image. Because the rage between the sun and everything else is so vast you can't have highlight detail and still be able to see the lighthouse as anything other than a silhouette - unless you do an HDR. I wanted to be able to see detail in the lighthouse so i set an exposure somewhere between the two. - Mike

Very entertaining double feature once again Numpty! Excellent work of making do with what exposure was available to you! i don't want to "piss on another man's fireworks", but during the course of banter on your lovely Facebook discussion page a few weeks back where i was being machine gunned with street photography questions i encountered a brilliant question from a Paul Hutchins. That was "do you ever go out to shoot and come home with little to nothing?". i was completely honest with the good man and said "all the time, but that is sadly the way it goes and how one learns". Regarding this rather dour comment: i just wanted to throw in what you DO touch on in this series, and that is: mother nature or father time, or both can often come around and kick on in the backside and wreck this sort of long planned out sort of shoot, or any shoot. i have to tell this to anyone to not be discouraged by this, and consider it an extremely valuable lesson instead. best iain

I never give the crop factor any thought. The numbers I quote are only a rough starting point to see what it looks like in the viewfinder. Just go for a focal length that makes the scene look the way you like and try lots of them because there isn't a right or wrong - there's only what you like the look of. Hope this helped..

mike , so when shooting say sunsets etc if you cant use a grad filter...would u say use ap priority? is this correct what im getting from this video? thanks again for answering my questions so quick :)
@MikeBrowne9 жыл бұрын
Thanks +lucas Scott - It doesn't matter which mode you use because that's just for making the exposure. The Grad lowers the light level across the sky to make the clouds more moody and dark and take some brightness away from the sun area. So it doesn't matter which exposure mode you use, just be careful not to overexpose the bright bits or under expose the dark areas. Using your histogram will help with this. here's a video to help you.. www.photographycourses.biz/videos/technical/exposure/Histograms-and-highlight-warnings - MIKE

I'm not the best person to ask this one Jose, I never home print and send files to a pro lab because it's easier and cheaper. But I do miss that feeling when you see the print slowly creeping out - it's a bit like it was in a B&W darkroom. For good quality photo prints you would be best to get a six ink photo printer, calibrate it to your monitor and use proper photo papaer. If anyone can suggest a printer they like please help Jose out here... MIKE :-)

It's critically important we know whether the camera you used here is APS-C format or 35MM as that affects whether a particular lens is wide-angle or telephoto. Brand/model doesn't tell it to those who don't know much about the particular brand.

I would greatly appreciate it if u can respond back but is a fujifilm finepix s4000 a good dslr for photography as i am fairly new to photography
@MikeBrowne9 жыл бұрын
Cameras don't take pictures +YouthGamer people take pictures by learning the techniques of photography (light, composition, exposure) and using their own creativity to blend them together. All cameras capture great images these days so which brand is less important than whether you like the feel of it in your hand and it makes sense to you. I recommend trying a camera in a store before buying one. The fujifilm finepix s4000 is a compact camera so you won't have as much control over the techniques I mentioned than with a DSLR. But you can still shoot great images with any camera if you practise with light and composition. Hope this helped and you have fun with your photography as you learn and grow. Here's a video which might help you with that - MIKE www.photographycourses.biz/videos/reviews-and-help/help-and-advice/how_to_be_happy_with_your_photos.html

I don't like the crazy look of HDR photos either, but there are useful things about the technique. In this example, you could take a slightly overexposed shot and if you find in post that the lighthouse is a bit dark, you can bring in some of the other exposure to lighten it up.
@MikeBrowne8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely +Cristi Neagu HDR is just getting a wide range we can see with our eyes but is beyond the camera's ability to capture, to be visible in the finished image. HDR can be used to make an image look natural as you say - MIKE

Mike, isn't it a hazard to look at the sun through optics? What are your thoughts?
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig Harrison, I've always known this not to be a problem if it's a quick check your composition is set up correctly. Online though it says differently so i wouldn't want to advise you to if it was not safe. If you have an option of a live mode which some cameras do you could use this then your only looking at your LCD screen instead of through the viewfinder. Hope this helps - CHRISTINA
@FGKaye8 жыл бұрын
It seems to me that if you had taken a compass reading when you first arrived, you would then be able to predict, where the sun will rise & where it will set. Using a compass with a moveable bezel, point " W " at the setting sun, turn the bezel to re-align the bezel with the compass pointing " N ", that's your variation from " True N ", then use the dial-in compass, to predict where the sun will rise, by aiming it " E". EASY !

Not sure I agree with that. When I zoom in to 100%, I can see a difference. Photo's shot at F22 are slightly softer. My shots at F11 are pin sharp. Yes, you may not see a difference on smaller prints or when picture fills the screen, but on larger prints, I can see the difference personally

Sorry, but HDR cant be look that natural as a normal pic. Close to a normal pic yes. HDRs take much more information, store this info and compress in only 1 pic. Then you have a no totally natural pic. Shooting scene/scenario shooting as a HDR doesnt make sense. Pos-Pro is fine.
