Hi, I live in Ecuador and I have an AWD Astro Van for more than 15 years (1996 model fully equiped) and I have traveled all over my country with this Van. It have taken me and my family to the beach, the jungle, the high mountains (almost 5.000mts or 15,000 feet), through mud, rivers, sand, and my Van always works super good. The powerful engine, the AWD and ABS brakes make us feel super safe. I will never sell this car! And also parts are not expensive and still easily available in my country.

The van that CAN! It's a shame they don't make a mid-sized van that's body-on frame and RWD with a pushrod V6 engine that's tried and true. Today, it's all front wheel drive, 4 cyl unibody turbos riddled with garbage electronics
@JRobert1111112 жыл бұрын
The Astro/Safari vans were never body-on-frame. Contrary to popular belief, the 85-05 Astros are ALL unibody. When you read about them it mentions a "full ladder frame", but that is the typical unibody frame welded onto the body which is a full ladder frame design. Nor was the Astro/Safari ever built on the S-10 chassis, which is body on frame. They only shared the engine and transmission. Even so, the pushrod V6, no whiney turbo crap and all of the garbage electronics of newer cars. Not to mention new cars are just downright butt-ugly. Myself, I have a 93 Astro and an 06 Tahoe, both great cars.

ASTRO vs EXPRESS i went searching over and over and over. Bought Astro, traded with Express now. I'm very happy with Express. They are pretty much the same price used and MPG. But Express is much more reliable, easy to work on, parts plentiful, more up-to-date, AWD available, Yes bit bigger but no bigger than Silverado so not too bad getting around (Express is basically Silverado with a Van body), and drives very nice. Also, Express has higher crash rating than Astro which is really terrible.

@Ms Lee I bought 2007 Express 1500 AWD high-top conversion van. MUCH roomier than Astro, very comfortable. For MPG, I can get 17mpg on freeway, keeping under 70MPH. I think you get similar mpg on Astro.
@jwc31042 жыл бұрын
@Ms Lee Mine is 5.3L V8. I would NOT get a V6 powered Express, and there are express 2500/3500 with 6.0L V8 engine, but 5.3L is plenty powerful. Astro has been discontinued for 15+ years. You can still get Astro parts, but Express is still in production. GM sold lot more Express than Astro. Express powertrain and chassis is basically from Silverado, so parts are plenty. Walk into any junkyard in North America, you'll find dozens of Express.

It's the most dangerous vehicle I've ever driven in the snow, although mine is only 2wd. It gets stuck easily, and the rear end breaks free easily when it's slick out. It's a gas hog. For $3500 is has been pretty reliable for the last, almost 7 years, as a work van full of tools and material. I've beaten the piss out of it, but it's time to go to the yard. The rear shock mount has rusted through and broken off of the frame.

@@keithhanson1411 The Astro does have a unique 2 idler arm setup. GM had the better idea on the original "threaded" idler arms, but they wore out quickly. Then the aftermarket came out with the "ball and socket" design idlers. They do NOT work as all of that extra movement greatly changes your "toe" adjustment. The idea was to have a solid pivot point with no other movement, and also to be a low friction design as these vans have a very weak pull to center versus other cars. Back in the late 90s, TRW had a "heavy duty" series of idlers with brass bushings, grease zerks, etc. to work like the OEM idlers, but much more robust. I put them on my 93 Astro back in 1997 and they're still in great condition. Other than those, everything is still factory on my front end including ball joints, tie rod ends, etc. I do lube the front-end twice a year though. Good handling, never wears tires unevenly, etc.
