In 1990, I was still in junior high school. A magazine introduced an incredibly amazing jazz pianist. but, I listened to album by a certain jazz trio at audio system shop, without paying attention to the name of the pianist introduced in a magazine, and was captivated by the overwhelmingly amazing playing. One day, when I read a magazine again, there was an article raving about Keith Jarrett, which was the exact name of the pianist in the only jazz trio I was obsessed with. After that, even after he achieved the unbelievable and unexplored music of the Vienna Concert, he did not stop and made me happy with many wonderful activities. I listened to his performance of Nat King Cole's Answer Me over and over again, crying tears of sadness and gratitude at the wonderfulness of his performance of Nat King Cole's Answer Me, which was released after it was announced that he would cease performing. Thank you very much to the rare performers in history who were born for the sake of music. I will continue to be saved by you.

For those looking for some highlights of this superb Feb 1985 Tokyo Performance, I would recommend listening to Rider starting at 28:28 with its swingy blues, So Tender starting at 50:10 where they so clearly are enjoying the music, Prism starting at 1:02:40 (with its hypnotising ostinato starting at 1:07:50), and finally God Bless the Child with again its swingy blues that will make you dance to its rhythm from 1:26:23 to the end. Thank you Mike for sharing this! Absolutely loved this performance of the Trio. The overall musical quality of the second set in particular is phenomenal.

Keith Jarrett has stood out for decades as a truly unique voice on the piano, even in a world of fantastic jazz pianists he shines and brings a style to the instrument that is his and his alone, it's a real blessing to listen to his work, and to get to watch him play, to me he has helped to shape what jazz means and will be forever a hero of music

In fact there was. Glenn Gould [1932-52], who, despite vocalising like KJ, is recognised as the greatest interpreter of The Goldburg Variations [J.S.Bach]. Vocalising in recordings of 'classical music' is even more difficult to tolerate than in jazz but Gould's unique and supreme rendition of the Goldburgs withstood that. A friend of mine is good friends with Jack de J. and indeed we all went 'for an Indian' in NYC. When I asked them how they regarded the K.J. vocalising, he just raised their eyes as to say, "We have to put up with it". OK by me

I was blown away to see Jack D. the drummer playing piano. He was really great [ on a Fazioli ]. This is about the best I have seen Peacock play [ particularly on Stella by Cigarlight ]. Hard to look at Keith these days after his stroke and his left hand not working. We don't have long in the world to make a statement before life consumes us. Was great that these 3 found each other.

Jack and Gary were never distracted by Keith's vocalizing. Nor were they distracted when Keith left the keyboard and played the piano strings like a grand piano sized harp. They were as in awe of Keith's genius as was everyone else blessed enough to see him play live, even more so. The three of them playing together was mesmerizingly beautiful to behold. And contrary to the foolishness that Keith was dismissive to his audience, he is lovely person. He always intensely emersed himself in his performances and I imagine he needed time to unwind after playing. I saw him, Jack and Gary play three times. No one in the audience enjoyed what they were doing as much as the three of them did. It was apparent how much they loved playing together, and how much they loved each other. Sadly Gary has passed. Jack is still playing. Keith is recovering from his strokes of some six years ago. He thinks it was caused by the physical stress he experienced when he delivered a performance, stress especially on his brain. All he asked for from his audience was to pay attention and enjoy what he was giving to them. I know I did. The three autographed my copy of Standards 1 after they played in Houston at the Wortham in the early 90s. All were very gracious when I asked. In the 00s, I saw them play at the Mann. While he waited on stage for some sound adjustments, I had a brief conversation from my front row seat with Keith about how his looks were aging as wonderfully as his playing. He had a good laugh as he pondered out loud if that said more about his looks or about his playing.

Personally I like DeJohnette a lot. Great pianist himself [and a Fazioli man to boot]. But as a bassist his drumming would drive me crazy. I had a drummer exactly like him and at times it was impossible to get traction because he was so busy - specially with brushes. But I accept it was probably my fault not being good enough. It never used to bother me, but the other day I heard this trio on the radio and sort of laughed at how absurd it sounded. Maybe I've grown a bit conservative. It saddens me that that will most likely never happen.

I found you when l bought Arbor Zena because the Midnight Blue gradient down to the soft apricot depicted favorite and magic of every day. It lasts but a couple minutes, but l always took the time to bath in its special glow. l was once a back packer with a crowd of wonderful friends. l shared my insight of your album cover and from that night on when 'Arbor Zena' accured ,one of them would point it out with a smile that only a secret use of the language, always with a wink and smile. no one knew my music so l was expected to share at our get togethers in smoky rooms to listen to amazing music that had been chosen by a guy whose taste was in his ear. Thank you so much for all you've performed. Genius is so seldom demonstrated while improvising even when 'the muddling' hits blanking out of the greeve. But you never edited them out. . .and you have my undying respect my friend. Best regards in all things, Tom Hanson A tattered Soul On your stroke. . .l use 'threading' a much more thorough method of gleaning ones mind. . .creating synapses that are fresh and new or finding an old friend or concept you loose track of by finding a new path. zena

Keith Jarret had to met the classical composer and pianist John Gould from Canada, or least listened to him. Gould hummed also, as he played. Although, Mr. Gould did not stand as he played and tapp his feet. You had to have the met the one and only Stevie Wonder. All you Jazz cats bump into each other and even cross over each other, up and down the road , layering over and over. Somtmes it can be a bumpy ride. What an amazing ride, love life all the seconds and inches and love one another. What a jazz trio. I love you, Keith and all others who love music. Eloquence of space and time transcending. Happy Holidays, 2023, and peace on our earth and Happy New Years 2024 . 🎄☃️🎄❤️❤️❤️ 🙏❤️🌍🌿🕊🎵🎶🎵 🎼🎹🎻🥁🎵🎶🌠🌌

Jack DeJohnette is truly awesome! His solo at around 30:00 is beautiful. Several years ago at Drum Daze in Columbus, OH he played continuously for 45 minutes or more. It was inspiring all the way through. And his Sonor kit sounded wonderful, too. I love Keith's way with a gospel feel!

We have all listened to various greats and trio formations, but this is so unique that I have tears in my eyes when I listen to this masterpiece. If we are talking about this level of musicianship, then it is very difficult to deviate from this superiority, I say this as an amateur musician, but I have listened to a lot so that I can comment like this. These people are prophets of good times, past or future, you decide...

i took piano lessons and competed for a while for the judge's scores. i have always bobbed my head to the music - and my teacher and judges tried to get that out of me. they believed any head bobbing or any other distraction was a distracting and thus unnecessary additive for any pianist. i have never stopped bobbing my head and never will. i just come across keith recently and am glad to see another non-mannequin pianist

There is more than one truth: When practising, it does draw energy or concentration to other areas so I think you should be able to deliver a piece without additional "piano jazz hands". However, if you're inspired which can not happen every time, who is there to stop you from being free?
