All you really need is some salvaged metal, an angle grinder, simple welder and a drill, maybe a few other basic had tools to build this.

Mike, you can also use that jig for shingles. You cut your cants random width and then cut the shingle blocks to whatever you want the shingle length to be. You then set the blocks up with the grain perpendicular to the mill, hold them in place and then go through your same tilt routine. The variable thickness of the boards or shingles could be set up for the same tilt on each stroke if you put your hinge in the middle of the jig and then had it so it would tilt the same amount each way. This requires that the cant be centered over your pivot. Another way is to have the jig set up so you can tilt both left and right with hinges on both sides. Again, you would want to center the cants between the two pivot points.

Like you, I built my sawmill from scratch. I watched several of your videos and incorperated some of what you have built. I started two years ago and each winter I bring the mill in and make modifications to improve efficentcency. I have learned a lot from your channel, and others. only thing i would change is weld the square tube to the round tube. i know you have a set bolt in it right now but over time that will back out and end up ruining some of the boards. its a fixed value since you want both lobes to work at the same time.

The center pivot is a good idea, everything should cut at the same thickness. Another idea would be a spring detente to lock the position of the shift lever when you move it and another fancy idea, add a solenoid to switch the cut and a switch so each pass of the blade trips the cutting angel. Good Job, I like it.

@@Mikefestiva It would be possible to upgrade this jig with a switch on the level or angle that ties to an input on your control board. With a bit of programming, it could automatically set the cut depth according to that switch position. Also, not proceed if you forget to move the cam between cuts/activate an error light or buzzer. Of course an actuator to move the cam could be better, but more work and programming if that board has enough inputs/outputs. Nice job :)

Nice job! Have you thought about doing waney edge siding too? I've built a few sheds with waney edge larch and the fact that it's not all straight cladding breaks up the sight lines and the shed blends in a lot better.

Custom lap siding can be very expensive. I needed some for a garage remodel. The original siding was at least 50 years old and made from redwood. Luckily, my ex-wife and I had friends who were contractors. They had some custom redwood lap siding left over from a job and gave it to us. Fortunately it was the same dimensions as the existing siding. I couldn't imagine the price today.

Thanks Jerry 😊 you know I can’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure it’s lift start, I haven’t used the TIG option on the Omni PRO for about 3 or 4 years. I mostly use a dedicated AC/DC TIG now.
