I don’t have the money for a star link/ generator/emp disabler. I’m broke
@DillonMangumАй бұрын
Keep in mind that Starlink satellites still rely on ground stations (known as gateways) to send and receive data. Here’s a simple breakdown: when you use your phone or computer to access the internet via Starlink, your request first goes from your personal Starlink dish to a satellite. That satellite then communicates with a ground station, which processes the request (like loading a website or sending a message). The ground station sends the response back up to the satellite, which relays it down to your Starlink dish, finally delivering the content to your device. These ground stations function similarly to cell towers, though they connect with satellites instead of phones. While they are equipped with backup power for emergencies, they are still vulnerable, much like cell towers in a major disaster situation. Think of it as just another tool, but never put full trust in one system! Thanks for the awesome content!
@haroldbleemel8537Ай бұрын
Exactly. Most are located in major cities as well (Chicago for example) so quite possibly will go down before anything else. I've said this probably a 100x by now, invest in HAM radios. You can get the Baofeng cheap and if SHTF nobody will be turning you in for not having a license.
@DillonMangumАй бұрын
@@haroldbleemel8537 I have family that lives in WNC. I've seen how important Starlinks are for the situation happening there. While there was major destruction, it was very localized. The ground station for that area is all the way in Gaffney, SC, which was unaffected by the storm impacts.

Great video, thank you for putting it out. As a long-time IT person and mobile power / Starlink user I have some additions that I thought would be worth sharing. 1) The mini plans do support (allow) mobile in-motion use out of the box with no "hacks". 2) The mini uses far less power than the previous models. 3) The mini will run off USB-C directly and does not require an inverter or 120v A/C - a big plus when powering it in older vehicles or off grid situations. 4) Starlink will bypass local power/infrastructure outages as you describe BUT... 4a) It still depends on down link ground stations (that require power and that have some limits on their generator run time, just like cell towers). 4b) The ground stations also depend on a functional internet backbone to be useful. 4c) Most phone apps (like iMessage, phone-over-internet, etc.) require a working back-end infrastructure / data centers / internet backbone. The main point is that a widespread EMP/CME/Cyber Attack/Government Internet Shutdown (yes, they are prepared to do this) can seriously impact what you can do with Starlink. It's fantastic for local or regional emergencies as we have seen with NC/TN/FL but, as you note at the end, is not a replacement for truly independent comms like HAM radio. Cheers!
@joshearhart6142Ай бұрын
I was actually suprised he didnt mention HAM, i see it as a much more widely obtainable goal for the most people, a Baofeng is what, $20? Some places even program them for you for less than $100. A $75,000 camper is great, but definitely out of scope for the majority of us. Not his fault tho. High tier operators like Mike are used to having the newest and best available, sometimes lotech is the way..

One recommendation that I would make to the viewers is that if you choose to install a generator for the home, select one that runs on propane. Liquid fuels such as gasoline or diesel will age and go bad over time. Propane stays stable almost indefinitely.

Its supposed to protect speech that you dont like too. I wasn't disrespectful in my comment. Just a difference of professional opinion. Government will shut all coms down when they want to by either jamming or physical destruction of said equipment. You know that. I'm sick of death of the SF community constantly attacking each other in order to try and get ahead. It's a real problem. More so in the SEAL community. I supported you when people were trashing your reputation online without seeing all of the evidence. If conservatives can't stop attacking each other and work together as a team, we arent going to win against the commies. Fact.

Starlink mini is pretty solid. I carry it in my camping/overlanding rig as a means of communication/way do my college classes from remote areas. I was able to reduce its power consumption to about 25-35W per hour, so on a Jackery 500, which is a very small power supply, I'm able to power it for an average of 16 hours on a single charge. I don't leave it on all day, just turn it on to upload school documents or send/check some messages etc then power it down. Combined with a small solar panel I have the ability to operate it indefinitely so long as I have a full day of sun at least once every week or two depending on how much I need to use it. I do want to upgrade my power supply and solar panels to be able to go longer or power more items, but as far as the Starlink Mini, its been great

Here is something about food storage that most people do not consider. Clearly label the expiration date, leaving the original expiration date visible. Check your storage on a regular basis or make a simple chart so that you know when things are about to expire. Don't let food go to waste! Take that food that is going to expire and donate it to a food bank, church, or some organization. There are hungry people near you and things do happen as we all know. If you can, get a receipt. And then write that donation off on your taxes. If you are donating to a specific organization on a regular basis, build up a good relationship.

Regarding using a vehicle inverter: for manufacturer installed inverters obviously don't go over the rated capacity. If using your own inverter, don't be tempted to run a high power inverter without checking the wire gauge connected to your cig outlet. For simplicity, if it's 10 awg wire rated at 30 amps you can safely run about 360 watts. You can easily start a fire if you're not careful.

It pulled 150-200mbps while driving winding canyon/mountain roads with even below the tree line where I’ve never had service before. Edit: it also fits perfectly in a laptop faraday bag

Ive been “saving” money and purchasing precious metals. The dollar might be somewhat strong now but if things continue the way they have been, the dollar is living on borrowed time. Either way, gold, silver maintain value and as most of you know they’ve been increasing in value quite a bit lately. I also recommend guns and ammo even if it’s just a .22LR, a Ruger 10/22 is a great example and is good for hunting small game and self defense an AR would be better but isn’t a necessity. Also if you do buy precious metals I recommend buying “junk” or constitutional silver and or fractional gold, ie 1/10 Troy ounce gold eagles.
@AnMi-o3xАй бұрын
Good advice. Junk silver will be great for bartering especially the dimes and quarters. I think the worth of each piece of silver/gold will be very subjective depending on how much each party thinks it's worth rather than what we pay in dollars now

If you're mobile, those solar generators are fine little systems. If you're talking about powering your house, I'd suggest something larger. A "solar generator" is a mini transportable version of a fixed whole house solar system. Same components, but able to sustain higher wattages for long periods. Here's what you need... Solar panels, charge controller, batteries, inverter, 10g wire, solar breakers. I'm off-grid out in the wilderness and have found that all I need to run my home is 600w 10a keeping 8 12v deep cycle batteries charged. Keep in mind, whether you're running 12v, 24v, or 48v, all of your equipment must be designed for those voltages and amps. My system is 4 times the capacity of a store bought solar generator at about the same cost. You can diy this (it's not difficult) if you want to get a little more tricky, you can setup panels facing east and west instead of south (you'll pick up an average of 6 more hours of sun per day)

Program your radios now, they are useless if you don’t have the proper frequencies.

HAM RADIO/ BEOFANG for comms. Water 3 gallons per person per day. Get water purification tablets. Food 700 lbs per person per year of a balance of nutrients and protein. Min 50 loaded magazines per rifle. Food stocks should be of foods that you currently eat now plus the staples like rice, beans, wheat berries, Celtic salt, sugar, powdered milk. Trash bags, chlorine tablets, rubber gloves, shovels. Etc.

It'd be cool to get your opinion on preparedness for people that are alone whether it be they don't have any friends or family or maybe their job has them traveling.

Getting to know your neighbors is a key pillar of prepping, even if you don't have nearby friends or family and live alone. Put simply, the best way to prep alone is to stop being so alone. It's similar to Mr. Miyagi's advice about the best defense being to not be there. That said, it's not always possible, but most of the time it seems to be more about lack of will to change and socialize than it is about actual impossibility of knowing one's neighbors. I struggle and fail a lot with this aspect myself, being predisposed to introversion and fierce independence.

@@Zednor9 I hear you there. No I wonder also about people that travel a lot and are away from their people not necessarily don't have people.
