I found myself smiling at the different colors in the green heart...then contrasted against the purple heart...wow! Adding the sliver to the handle was perfect. What a talent God has given you! Yes, a person can train to turn wood, but only an artist can see the hidden jewel waiting to emerge.

OMG - great use of a beautiful piece of greenheart. I have some old chunks of GH that were used for the lock gates in Bristol. They were replaced after about 70 years with new ones 15 years ago. Beautiful work! I was watching with the sound off because my hubby is watching the football game, so I didn’t know exactly what you were making until I read some of the comments. I’m thinking that it would be the perfect weapon to keep by the door to ward off any intruders! It’s short, so you don’t need as much swinging radius as a baseball bat. It’s hefty enough that it dam be used to knock a firearm out of an intruder’s hand before clobbering him over the head to render him unconscious. It’s a sad state of affairs that we live in here in the US, where crime is rampant enough that I see a self-defense weapon first off when seeing a beautiful piece of woodworking.

That's a beautiful nut cracker! 😊 I believe the choice of the greenheart inset in the handle is actually a very good choice from a mechanical function view point. It does look very nice, with the advantage damping stress and vibration in the handle, increasing the longevity. Some things I consider having been a helicopter mechanic. I've worked with wood, metal, and composite rotor blades. You'll have nowhere near rotor blade stresses, however, the discontinuos grain will prevent torque transmission from an off center hit. Well done, gaining mechanical benefits from an aesthetic accessory!

Beautiful mallet. 2 kilo will do quite a bit of pulverizing.😂 It always bothers me when woodworkers make "tools" and people tell us to keep them for show. A nice, hard US wood that I love to use for mallets is Osage Orange with a Live Oak Handle. Love the heft!

Nice work Mike. You've inspired me to give wood turning a go. So far, I've made a replacement knob and handle for my electric kettle, and am very happy with what I've done! If I could make a recommendation, I'd say that you ought to get a jointer or belt sander to flatten out your pieces before glue-up to ensure a nice, seamless connection. Cheers!

I wondered how it would have turned out cutting the slot in the handle perpendicular to the greenheart sliver. Maybe it wouldn't have chipped when you hit home. Beautiful piece. Glad you intend to use it rather that sitting on a shelf. I think you will appreciate it more. Kudos.

You are right Mike, what I did was a mistake and if I had just stopped to think about it for a second I would have made the right decision lol 😀

Great work! I have to say that I would probably be the guy who would hang it up and not use it because it is so nice looking. In reality, we know it should be used because the hard wood is what is needed for the job it is intended for. Thanks for adding all these interesting videos.
