Welcome back to the workshop, where creativity spins on the lathe of imagination! In today’s woodturning project, we’re transforming ordinary offcuts into an extraordinary piece of art. Join me as we delve into the mesmerizing world of epoxy resin and woodturning to create a stunning Jarrah Burl resin bowl.
Jarrah Burl, known for its rich hues and intricate grain patterns, pairs beautifully with the glass-like clarity of epoxy resin. This project not only showcases the unique characteristics of these materials but also emphasizes the beauty of turning overlooked pieces into something spectacular. Whether you’re a seasoned woodturner or a curious crafter, this project will provide insights into the techniques of resin casting and the artful precision of woodturning.
So, grab your tools, and let’s get spinning as we blend art and craftsmanship in this exciting woodturning journey!

I love your approach with the resin Mike - using it as a tool to combine some otherwise tricky pieces, but then spending so much time and love revealing that burl and those grains. It really does keep the wood as the star of the show

The first couple of times I saw slow-motion on this channel were instances where disaster struck: the piece broke, or came off the lathe, etc. So now when you go into slo-mo, my reaction is "Oh no! What's going to go wrong!" LOL Glad nothing did go wrong. Spectacular piece. I love how the grain seems to match going across the resin, so it almost looks like it was 1 piece of wood, instead of 3.

Thanks so much that is what I was hoping for with the 3 pieces. I have had a few people start to worry when it went into slomo lol, sorry about that 😃

Beautiful idea to use resin, but still feature the wood in the design. You did have me yelling Noooo! When deciding to keep the lip, because I was wanting to see the natural wood drop into the center...but perhaps the rim gives it a more human touch. It is these choices, along with the final result that make it so much fun to watch!😊

Beautiful! I'm glad you decided to keep the top lip on the bowl, I think it mirrors the shape of the foot nicely. I've never heard of Jarrah wood before so had no idea it would shine up to such a lovely deep red! Love the grain that showed up in the final polishing as well. The resin ties all the pieces together, I think it makes the wood look like one very varied burl!

When mixing colors, the dyes mix together well, but mica works better in a thicker mixture drizzled over afterwards and then “mix” with a heat gun. The heat will cause the resin to rise and fall and the mica will travel with it, but it will stay in thicker veins instead of dispersing. As long as you don’t overheat the resin, it will help it penetrate the wood and get any trapped air out as well.

Thanks Cheryl, I'm actually thinking about doing just that. I've started to collect loads of unusual and exotic species to use when I'm ready 😄

Great work Mike. Those broken screws were not your friend at all. Great technique to get them out. The bowl came out beautifully.

Beautiful bowl, I do like the lip you left for definition. The composition is amazing though with the burl live edge turned in. Was like watching you turn a geode. Definitely deserved the hi gloss finish.

I get the impression that your design are very influenced by Japanese design, with the use of simplicity, contrast, negative space, and when you use epoxy, the wabi sabi idea of damage made beautiful. I'd love to see you turn something like a tea bowl in a burl as beautiful as the Jarrah. And I appreciate the technical notes too.

Thanks! That is a very interesting idea, I like it and will see if I can find a nice piece of wood to try it. All the best, Mike

What a beautiful wood jerrah. Had never seen it.. and the combination with those colors of resin, just perfect.. it let the wood be the feature instead of the resin.. very good call 💪🥰

Awesomely beautiful piece with that wood - I couldn’t get a close enough look to see any blue- but yes I agree blue would’ve made it , but the gold swirls along the centre bottom look classy - another stunning piece that shape is a good look on that wood!

Another "Wow", Mike. I must admit that I really don't like all the mess when resin is turned, but the results you achieve are inspirational - I may be tempted (when I have cleared my woodturning area sufficiently to enable me to more easily clean up the resin shavings; actually, that may mean 'unlikely'!!)

haha thanks David, there is a bit of clean up required after I must admit lol but I always get it done before filming the end piece 😃
