Believed to be extinct 50 million years ago I turn a bowl from a living fossil. And just for a change I put the outtakes in there as well.
This woodturning channel, explores the uses of wood when combined with resin, epoxy, to make woodturning projects, that are easy and can be classed as art. A lot of the wood turning projects I make can be completed by the beginner through to the more experienced wood turner. If you have any ideas for artwork, wood inlays, epoxy projects or any other wood turning projects please get in touch. Collaborations are always welcomes.

Lol at the outtakes! I planted a metasequoia about 20 years ago, I had no idea the wood was so beautiful. The colours and that grain are stunning. Lovely piece.

Maybe about 30 ft? It's not grown as tall as I expected in the time, a betula albosinensis planted at the same time is slightly taller. I took a big risk planting it as it's not that hardy and we get some pretty cold winters here. But it came through -15C one year. It's starting to develop it's autumn colours now. @@MikeHolton

I love the bowl. A terrific piece of wood. So glad the bark stayed on. I would not have tried to pronounce the scientific name on camera. Loved the outtakes. Very well done. I am glad you did not apply colour. Nice to see mother nature on this piece. The drill chuck seemed to be rotating from the load of the Forstner bit. I recommend checking the female Morse Taper in the quill. Assuming you have a clean looking male MT use a Sharpie along the length of the taper perhaps 3-6mm wide stripe. Push the male MT into the quill and manually rotate the taper. Remove the taper and look at the Sharpie mark. If you have portions of the taper with no Sharpie, this part is making contact. The portions with the Sharpie remaining are not making contact. It is easy for small dings and burrs to be in the female taper. I have experienced this. Slipping/spinning tapers can cause this over time. I happen to have MT2 and MT3 hand reamers, but most turners do not. A "poor-mans" MT reamer is to cut a strip of e.g., 600 or higher wet-dry paper which cover about half the circumference of the taper. Apply a few drops of WD-40 as lubricant, wrap the paper around the male taper and insert into the quill. Slowly rotate the male taper. You will feel and hear when the paper has removed any dings or burrs. Starts as a roughish sound then goes to smooth sound. I hope this helps. Dave.

Thanks Dave and thanks for the tip, I'll give this a go later today. I took a good look at it not too long ago but I guess I have done a lot of turning since then. Glad you liked the outtakes, I'm dyslexic so words like these are a bit of a challenge, I just ended up laughing at my efforts so I thought I'd put them in. Thanks as ever. Mike

When I first saw the title, I kind of missed the word living and was thinking you'd gone off the deep end and were about to try turning fossilized wood. (A bit of web browsing made me conclude that doing that successfully would be somewhere between borderline impossible and wholly impossible.) Glad I was wrong. I really like the natural color this piece especially around the eye and the bark is a lovely touch.

I'm so sorry not commenting on the piece first, but laughed so loud at the outtakes, especially when you eventually just laughed and came back with a very droll "hi" 😂 Not that I wish things to go wrong but really hope you have more outtakes to share 🙃 Now to the main attraction. Such a pretty bowl. As someone who has no knowledge (apart from what I've learned from your previous videos) of wood turning, I can only comment on how I feel about it. Love the flow of the live edge and the colour. As a fan of natural wood, I'm glad you didn't colour it. OK, for what it's worth, that's my comment 🤪🤭

Haha thanks Fiona, I just had to put the outtakes in as it was just so ridiculous how a grown man can have such a problem saying such a simple term 😂, for what it's worth I can now say it perfectly. The only other outtake I added was on one of the prise giving video's, not really an outtake more of pre filming bater with my wife kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGG9eWCra7qZmKMsi=b7O2pyRLqxFlmaF0

Hey Mike, My understanding is that with softer wood species, turn at a higher RPM and cut slower? No!?😅 I've never turned a Red Wood species...😢 I've done Western Red Cedar, and that was difficult!

Thanks John, it was a beautiful wood to turn and it came out amazing well for a softwood. The lumberjack lathe is a good starting point for a turning journey. This is what I started with, my wife bought me it for our anniversary. When you get serious you may want something larger but it is still a very capable machine for the price.
