That is absolutely nutty but beautiful! If you ever try to do something like this again, I would like to suggest painting the bottom of the inlay area black so that the tinsel/sparkly bits would really pop rather than getting a tad lost against the light unfinished wood background. Just a suggestion, though. Great job on this piece, Mike! 👍

Hi Mike, what a terrific job the red on the bowl really enhances the grain pattern in that maple inside and out, and the sparkle does come across in the video but i bet its better in real life, I think you were right to pre-mix it as otherwise i think the sparkly bits would just lay on the bottom of the inlay with just clear resin over the top. It is a lovely shape as well. it's funny how sometimes the wood will push us in a direction we don't necessary want to go but end up with quite a spectacular finish. Altogether another great job, another great inlay

Hi Mike, to use your 'new favourite word' again, I must admit I thought you might be bonkers to both stain the wood (would it diminish the grain?) and to add the sparkly inlay, but my, how wrong was I?! @@k9insomniac783 No, not yet but I do hope to one day. Field maple is in America but it was introduced not so long ago so not really a tree you will find many of. Sycamore is beautiful to turn, it has an amazing grain very similar to maple.

I have seen worse blanks. Any blank can have a layer of mold, especially if the conditions were right for spalting. I was keeping my fingers crossed you had sufficient resin to fill the groove and did not have voids once you turned. The inlay was messy to mix and pour, then a "bonus" mess of the static debris clinging to everything. The bowl looks terrific. I would have preferred the inside to be natural wood so easier to see the nice grain. I had not heard of field maple, so I learned of a new species. I looked this up. It has been established in the US, but I have not heard of this locally. Another species, Norway maple came from Norway and is more common locally. Norway maple can have some interesting grain and colours. I have several pieces for future turning projects. The inlay should look terrific in certain light. Glad this experiment worked out. Well done. Dave.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton Жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, to be honest this is my first turning of field maple and it did not disappoint. I do have another blank so I will be making another bowl and I promise not to stain it. The grain is quite beautiful and it turns so easily, just wish all blanks were like this. The inlay was a huge faff but I think the end result is work it, the sparkle does not come over on camera quite as much as I would have hoped for but nothing I can do about that. I had plenty of resin left over but can't help thinking it may have been better putting the material in the rim first then poring in the resin, perhaps next time. Talk soon and thanks as always for your support. Mike
@lv_woodturner3899
@lv_woodturner3899 Жыл бұрын
Adding the material first may be more tricky depending on the viscosity of the resin. Easier for an air bubble to get trapped in the material. The small torch may not be able to get the heat deep enough in the material to pop all the bubbles. I would try this on a sample block first. Too much work on a bowl if this other method does not work. I can imagine the camera is not able to do justice to the sparkle effect. Dave.

Interesting inlay. If youre worried about covering all the wood with tinsel you could just put on a base coat of metallic (silver) paint. That is if the resin sticks to paint. Different base coat colors will give different effects, always good to do small test before hand. Moved yet?

Mike, on a previous video you used shellac with raw linseed. Can you tell me what proportions you used please
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 9 ай бұрын
Sure, it was about 60-40/70-30 oil to shellac, you can buff it in, sometimes you may need a light wire wool with very fine wool and then another coat to get the best result. This mix is often referred to as shine juice. Hope this helps, Mike
