Right near the end I became pretty sure that it was white oak based in the size of the rays. I surfaced hardwood lumber for about a decade. Nice bowl, Mike.

OMG the moment it flew off was such a shock! But as you once said, a turner doesn't make mistakes, just smaller bowls. The result is amazing! Those swirls look like a Van Gogh painting.

It was quite a relief for both of us when you cut back the spongy areas only reveal more swirling grain. The black Milliput was a perfect complement to the general color of the bowl. You, and the mighty 1/2” bowl gouge, what a super combo! Great job Mike!👍🏻 Joe CA

Such a beautiful grain! I was so excited when I saw the original lump, it held all that promise. It's a shame you can't use the other bits, unless you put them with resin? That would be gorgeous. I had a tiny piece of similar oak and thought it amazing, you have a wonderfully rustic, organic looking bowl there. I hope you tell your wife that she is getting her own fanbase on KZbin!

Nicely done. I've never turned, well, anything, but I've always found oak, and red oak in particular, pretty unpleasant to work with. But the grain and patterns that you can get from it frequently make it all worthwhile, and man, that was some truly amazing grain swirl in the close-up right there at the end.
