Thank you Rick and as long as you play a Les Paul you are number one in my book. But this year my group is going to let me play Pipe Line so I will have to turn to the surf special. Some how I ended up in a folk group with some guys from our church choir. But they are not going to hold me down LOL But I enjoy that old music. It is just some of the protest song that get me down. But being an infantry man in Vietnam does not make it easy. Thanks for watching buddy, Gary

Yes! Do one! I do a lot of segmented turning as a flat board is all that’s needed. The stair step would be a good addition!
@ThePapa194712 сағат бұрын
Thank you Stan. Are you saying you leave it as a flat board? The video is in the planning stage. Gary
@stanbreda72228 сағат бұрын
@ No. I’m saying segmented can be made using a flat board . It is hard to find a nice piece of solid wood to make a bowl like that and I can get many types of beautiful flat wood to turn a segmented bowl. I often use walnut and oak for the contrast. I have much fir and alder on my property and use it a lot. Fir is a bit soft and takes a lot of sanding.

That must be the best, simplest, and most easily understood illustration made by segmenting. It totally looks like sunset at the castle turret with the staircase winding up and around. And as for wanting to see how it is fine, I'm not good at seeing things and not knowing how they were done, so you know I don't do segmented turning, but I really would love to see that video. And it looks like the replacement lacquer will do, that finish is perfect.

Really love the step illusion Gary. Would not mind seeing how you do that. Really interesting seeing you show it; from some angles, the steps go upside down where it appears the treads are on the bottom of the steps (for me, it hit at 16:42 but I think it could occur anywhere -- it's how the eye perceives the orientation). Thanks for showing how you do this
@ThePapa19472 сағат бұрын
Thank you Marik. It is so easy for it to swap direction which makes it even more interesting of an illusion. But I find most illusion I have done have the same thing going on. Thanks Gary. I wish I could have watched this two days ago as I am currently making videos of my first attempt at a segmented piece (expecting to fail on my first attempt). What I have tried to do is make hexagonal segments that are cut at 30 degrees, which are turned inside out (using square segments to take complete a "ring"). Every 2 sets of segments, when reversed, forms a decagon with a fluted outer edge (2" diameter flute). I made the segments as staves, planning to saw rings from a single blank and reglue to create 2 colour fluted spirals. I'm half sure that this won't work out because half way through I spotted something wrong with my table saw setup, but maybe using some of the methods in this video I will be successful on my second attempt.

Nice vessel! Love the steps! A video on them would be great. Have you read the discussion about the no fail base including Jerry Bennett and Steve Bonney on the AAW Segmented Woodturners forum? According to that thread the high segment count base is a good direction to go. The step they added was angled grain direction to deflect movement stresses. Steve actually built some and tested them outdoors in winter conditions that fared pretty well.
@ThePapa194715 сағат бұрын
Thank you Gary and I plan on doing a special video on the illusion. I have not read what they have said about segmented bottoms and have not heard of Steve Bonney. I learned about segments in the early 70's when I started my pattern making apprenticeship. The patterns we made were mostly stored in a non controlled area that the foundries had. So they went from hot to cold. They held up good unless they had a water leak. We did not have wedgie sleds back then but the patterns would be too big for one anyway., So I did get that part from Jerry Oh I do another no no. I will use solid bottoms on some turnings. Maybe it is the humidity in Oregon but have not had issues. Thanks for watching, Gary

I saw Jerry Bennetts presentation on the no fail base and I recall that he varied the angle of the end grain so that it wasn’t at end to end. I do almost all segmented turning and was lucky enough to take a week long class with Malcolm Tibbetts. Malcolm, who I consider the master at segmented turning would never make a base where the points come together. Eventually the wood will move and the bottom will fail. The best options are floating bottoms or solid wood using quarter saw wood.

@gregj2647 maybe it has a lot to do with where you live. I have not had issues with segmented or solid bottoms and been doing this for 50 years.

@ guess you’re lucky

@@gregj2647 perhaps but with no issues I would say real lucky. Have you had issues with solid or segmented bottoms? I keep hearing this but been lucky I guess 🤣

Hello Gary--Great video--I would love to see how to do the steps--They really add a lot to a simply elegant bowl--Could you include a shot of your sheet with all the segment lengths and specs to build the bowl--Have a Wonderful Holiday Season and I really enjoy your videos--

Gary, it's really super cool, and yes, make the step video. I know you use a computer program for the design, but could you talk about the length of the segment. Thank You. Stay safe and healthy.

Thank you Bobby. I can give you a print out of the sizes. All the rows have a different width. But I might just show it straight up and down for an easy glue up. You could then put a curved side on it. Thanks for watching, Gary

Hi Gary, been waiting to see a video of you using the glue pot I sent you. I was beginning to think you weren’t going to. I personally think it makes applying glue to segments a less messy job and I hope you will find the same. I know old wood turners are hard to teach new tricks. LOL. Name is Miles Brett from Calgary, Alberta.

Hi Miles, Thanks for the glue pot, it is definitely less messy and I’ll make sure I show it in a future video. I am so sorry I could not recall your name. And it seems Gmail has a way of deleting things. I do appreciate you sending this and I did find it very useful I will use it it some things for sure but it is hard to retrain and old dog. Thanks again my friend, Gary

I love doing illusion projects. Most of mine have been designs for cutting boards. I need to do some of these wood turning illusions and would be interested in a "how to" video.

Hi Gary those steps are amazing and so are you how do you do it ?Yes I would love to see how you do it but I hope it’s not as hard to do as it seems or else I will not be able to do it but I must try, thanks again and long may you keep doing it you never cease to amaze me and happy Xmas Ron.
@ThePapa194712 сағат бұрын
Thank you Ron. Well I have worked with angles my whole life so that does help. I will share what I think is the easy way but still takes accurate cuts. Have you done any segmented glue ups? Thanks for watching, Gary
@walterpannell1811 сағат бұрын
@ Hi Gary I have done a few segmented pieces but I think they were only successful because I left gaps between them so it isn’t easy to see the faults but I would love to try the step bowl that would be a great achievement for me thanks Gary looking forward to seeing the video
