I also sell plants online and I can make one improvement in that which will reduce shipping cost. You have put plant in between of cardboard length.. put it towards bottom and not exactly touching the bottom. Then there will be a small gap at the bottom of box and pot base. Just fill it with either bubble wrap or balls and then tape it.. thus the total height of the item with packaging will get reduced which will make volumetric weight way less than present.

You may want to try 1 gallon twist tie close plastic bags from Wally World. The Twist Tie Bags (1 gal, w/ twist ties, $0.032/each) cost less than 1 qt Zip bags ( $0.038/each). They should be large enough for you to pull it up over the quart pot and use the twist tie to secure the mouth of the bag around the stem of the plant. This would eliminate all the messy, sticky taping or the need for the paper towel, unless you want to keep it for moisture and to keep the soil from moving around. Admittedly, it may require some repositioning of the tape to hold the cardboard on, but the time and cost savings for someone doing this for profit should be worth it. Great video and thank you for all the hard work you put into this channel! God bless.

I'm not a business type; just wanted to send my out of state friend a mango tree sapling from my yard this summer, but this looks so good and safe! Great ideas, thanks so much for it, I'm sure it'll work out wonderfully. It occurs to me that if you're less worried about appearance you could also use unfolded cereal boxes or regular thick cardboard (when sliced/scored vertically every half inch inch or so on the outside, to allow for easy curving) instead of the thick cardboard paper to get the same stabilized effect too.

At first I was thinking that your cardboard layer was a bit of overkill, but then when I saw him psycho shower attack scene into that box, I realized that it also acts as a nice boxcutter shield. It's probably important to make sure that the receiver is able to unwrap the plant without damaging it in the process reasonably easily.

I love the method of taping it inside a cylinder to protect the plant. Regarding insulation and cold, two things I was wondering... Are you shipping via ground transportation or air? I'm thinking that the hold of a freight aircraft could get pretty cold at any time of year, so maybe a little insulation isn't a bad idea no matter the season. The other thing I was thinking is that some crumpled paper around the outside of the cylinder would probably do just as well as your bubble wrap did. Most insulation materials get their insulating properties from the air trapped inside them. You already have a pretty good skin around the outside with the box, tape and paper to prevent air movement from outside to inside. Any material that maintains air spaces and reduces the air's ability to move around should do a reasonable job for insulation. Crumple a piece to stuff in top and bottom and then a bunch around the gaps between the cylinder and the box to keep it kinda centred in the box and you're done and save a bit of tape. You can probably find a bunch of options for cheap or free sources of packing paper - depending on your volumes. Advertising flyers, old newspapers, junk mail, etc.

Wow. You did a really good packaging job. The plant must have never known it was shipped that far. The tapes were place strategically and not just anywhere or everywhere that it might give the buyer a headache in getting the plant out of the box. However, it would have been a great help to label the top and bottom part of the plant. As a buyer, i take extra care in opening the box so i appreciate such label.

Another good idea for frost protection, use one of those cheap mylar space blankets with the bubble wrap. Though, that metallic bubble wrap is basically the same thing. No such thing as excessive. I HATE buying plants and stuff and them coming damaged due to bad packaging. Also, the post office gives out long triangular boxes that can be used. I've cut them down and used them as dividers for multiplant shipping. (In place of the cardboard roll basically)

@@MikeKincaid79 I think your idea still works. I'll try draining all but just the bottom rim of water. I can slit an opening in some clear plastic bag like material and put it over the plant. Then squinch up the plastic tightly to cover the bottle opening with the plastic. So the plant will be unharmed. Then just maybe tape the excess plastic on the side of the bottle. Then do your method with the cardboard paper. I wish I could find that cardboard paper in bulk out here or there was a place to buy it. Since my plants are small I will try a cereal box but I'd like to print something pretty on it so it still looks nice. I'll try to make a video and share it here once I try it.

Mike you could patent the way you package the plant, along with the video points of how you want to receive a plant and sell it to companies like Michigan Bulbs, Brecks etc; Many times I've been tricked into ordering a special plant, only to receive some mostly dead thing in a bag that ends up dying and then I'm out my $$. Great video!
@MikeKincaid792 жыл бұрын
I never considered patenting it but if it pays the mortgage it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Wonder if that's even possible. Anyway, yeah, I like this method for sure. This packaging technique is labor intensive. See if you can make/have made a clear plastic vac-Q-form bio-fold. What is a bio-fold? Book. Think book. A bio-fold plant support/Box liner. . You know . Like a takeout salad bar thing

Life is labor intensive, Bob, haha. Intentions mean nothing, results define you.

Thanks Debra, glad you enjoyed the video! I think packaging is more important than selling because if your customer doesn't get exactly what they paid for then you won't have a customer for long, lol.
