Commodore Dekker, from what I understand in the expanded lore, was very like Kirk. Always found a way to win, save his ship and crew, a defeat his enemy. Then he ran into the Doomsday Machine and lost everything. Don't blame the guy for going a bit crazy, most people probably would. But, same as Kirk, he still found a way to win, even if it cost him his life. Absolutely fantastic episode and flatly one of the best ever. Loved it as a kid, love it now.

I love this episode. One of its gems is how to treat people. Decker was in shock for the loss of his crew. He then turned his regret into an iron will that didn't last long and that didn't treat people well. Then his loss of control turned into suicide, swamped with guilt. This set of responses is a valuable insight into our emotions and personality. At first, the crew criticized Decker's judgement when he was in command, especially when he kept saying "I'm in command." Then when he goes to suicide, they try to take that back. What seems like strength can be an unbalanced sense of control.

i have a few theories a) maybe they weren't expecting anything to survive long enough to get inside b) maybe thousands of years floating through space weakened the inner workings c) maybe the engineers who made put in a purposeful weak spot as a failsafe, so it wouldnt be completely unstoppable, or to absolve their guilt for creating such a thing

ACHILLES HEEl, right? Umm…all weapon systems have weaknesses. Birds can down planes by entering the engines. Tanks are usually strong in front-but weak in the back. A missile battery or a howitzer can be easily destroyed, provided you can get at it. A sub can be destroyed very quickly once you find it. The Doomsday Machine was impregnable from all sides, and destroyed anything approaching it…but the Shuttle was judged too small to bother with by the Machine's logic…and so when it got inside, it caused havoc. Like chucking a grenade inside the hatch of a tank, or like birds in turbine engines.

Decker's whole rationale for sending his crew down to the planet was that his ship was crippled: no working engines, no weapons, etc. Scotty comes on board with a three man damage control team and in little time gets the impulse engines working at 1/3 speed, recharges a phaser bank, gets the ship's communication system working again. Obviously the ship was still severely damaged, and if it had survived would needed to have been completely rebuilt. Still, if Scotty and three additional men could do what they did, what could Decker's full crew have accomplished if he hadn't sent them off to their deaths. It just shows another weakness and lack of leadership on Decker's part. He gets into a battle with the planet killer, seemingly with a faulty plan and tactics, and once he's beaten he pretty much gives up, and sends his crew to the planet. He stays because of some brave sounding, but empty "captain, last man on ship" ideal. Instead of charging into an uneven battle, how about getting out of range of the interference so he can contact Star Fleet? He didn't see the danger of sending his crew down to a planet, when earlier they had seen the planet killer slicing up other planets? Were there any shuttle craft still operational when he sent his crew down? How about putting the biggest bomb you can make and remote control fly it into the mouth of the planet killer? How about sending any surviving shuttles down to the planet surface with the crew? Did he send down any emergency supplies or equipment with his crew so they could survive being stranded there for however long it might take for someone to find them? Instead of giving up and sending his crew off, while he stayed to be the dramatic "captain, last man on the ship", his course of action should have been "don't give up the ship!" It's hard to see Kirk doing the same thing as Decker. I think Kirk in a similar situation would have never abandoned ship while there was still some chance to make some repairs and keep his crew on board.

The security guard made one HUGE mistake during his fight with Decker. When he had Decker down against the wall, he should not have let up on him. He stood back, whereas he should have continued with the beatdown in order to subdue Decker. You saw how Decker took full advantage of that respite. And you also saw how he did NOT let up on the guard once he got the upper hand. He just kept brutally pounding away until knocking him out completely. Decker was a much smarter fighter!

Could you imagine if Star Fleet got wind of that fight had Decker changed his mind? Someone's goose would've been cooked big time! A Commodore's word against a lowly security guard's? Better to be knocked out than kicked out!🥺🥺🥺

Poor Decker. He had surviver’s guilt from losing his crew and death was the only way for the pain to stop.

@ Man, that was a scary thing you said. Some dumb ass kid might actually believe what you said is a real viable answer to life.

@@daffidavit I felt the same way about a friend's suicide until a wise woman reminded me I wasn't responsible for his mental issues. We can't be held accountable for other's actions in that case.

This episode was based on a Humphey Bogart movie, which was based on who knows how many stories. It's fun fiction but stories are just stories.

This is what always perplexed me about this episode. The Constellation had shuttlecraft as well, why the Hell didn't Kirk use one to get off of the ship instead of dealing with wonky transporters? I mean, other than it being an infinitely more rational notion....

You would think security would be just a little better at their job than they are...

Seems like a reoccurring theme throughout the Star Trek series. Security people are always getting caught by surprise or being bested. And speaking of security, how is someone able to go to the shuttle bay, open the doors, and fly a shuttle out, without anyone stopping them?

I was thinking of how Spock should have sent both guards with him, knowing how mental he was, and just have 2 replacements come to the bridge.

The idea of the Doomsday Machine came to Gene Roddenbury while eating a rather delicious pastry horn. He exclaimed delightfully that the cream filled horn was the end of him, hence the Doomsday Machine story line.

Normally Spock's logic is impeccable. But, here see him having only one guard escort Decker when a second guard was immediately available.

Kirk lost at least half of his crew during the 5 year mission. Except for the head bow , a moment of silence and a bit of obligatory sad music for the audience . He never seemed to bothered.

I wouldn’t want to play poker with Mr. Spock. He might win.
