I think the most important thing for UX designer, is that you're a problem solver and a researcher

Thanks so much for this video. You explain things very well. I've always thought UX/UI were all about designing and coding for web and devices and that it was too overwhelming to try and transition to as a print designer. I'm glad to know I can choose one path or the other and that they're two totally different job roles.

Great video. I agree that knowing little bit of coding helps a lot. I see some young people in company where I work only knowing Photoshop to makeup the page, creating sometimes very difficult or hard to use designs when they go to be coded. Knowing coding can help a designer decide the path to go, knowing the coding limits or find new ways to present the website in creative and with motion.

Mike, love your videos, thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. I love that you work in the motivational videos to your channel as well :) Really happy to hear about Fireworks, I learned how to use it about 15 years ago, then stopped recently thinking it was too old school, for websites etc. I always really liked it. I'm trying to update my web design skills and get back into it again after a long hiatus. Your videos are very helpful and much appreciated! - Kat

***** if someone is just designing small websites, 2-4 pages. Do you think learning CSS is still important? I never learned CSS, I just use Dreamweaver and Fireworks, and I think everything looks great! I'm trying to figure out if it's something I should learn. I do know HTML. Are there things you can do with CSS that you can't do with HTML? Thank you Mike!!!

The requirement for HTML and CSS is really only required if you plan on landing a job as a Designer. If you're working well and building simple sites without it, no need really. Though its not required, learning the very basics will open eyes to other cool things you can do. So in that, its still useful to look into learning what you can do with it.

Ok I understand your point. The thing is some of us like the mix of creative websites. And for that you need to know front end (javascript,html&css) and a lot of design. I'm talking more about websites like awwards and so on. The websites are amazing and I truly wanted to dig in javascript for fun. But yeah is hard.

I'm enrolled in a Associate's program for Front-end Web Development but I want to design. I believe I'll finish the coursework so that I can have HTML, JavaScript, and CSS under my belt. But I would like to transition into UX Design because I'm creative! Great video!

Im agree with this video, and I might say that it is really importanto for a UI/UX desginer to know how to write code, why? because it is really important to know "how does it work", how does the navbars work, how the side menus work, that's like key today, knowing how does it work will really help a lot to improve the experience, the space and it also helps to imagine how it will look and stuff in your head even before to start the project. About what you said about having some references, its okay, in fact its recomended to have'em, I work a lot with frameworks, mostly bootstrap (Im a front-end web developer) and I dont really know every single line of the framework's code so I use a lot the documentation that bootstrap provides. Anyway, nice video mike.

It is really true that only have the design skill set is enough to be a UI/UX designer. However, it is really hard to be a good UI/UX designer without any basic coding knowledge.

Mike, when you say HTML/CSS is important for UI/UX designer, are you referring to a one-person freelancer who do all the work (research, strategy, production, design, and development) by him/her self?
@MikeLocke
@MikeLocke 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, mainly for the one-person freelancer. But in an organization where you're on a Product team and you're the UI/UX Designer, you probably won't do that much coding at all. That responsibility will be on the Front-End Developers who you will work with all the time.

Thank you so much for all your info Mike! I'm actually trying to work very hard at this, I'm learning a lot. I think most of it is listening to talks and classes on ux ui design like this to get familiar with the UX vocabulary. Prototypes, research, agile. All that goes into the process. I'm working on my portfolio right now. Can you possibly do more videos on the process of creating your portfolio and maybe how to find freelance work? I apologize if you already have videos on this subject up. -Kay

Mike, If You a person (graphic designer) is working as a freelancer and knows more than just graphic design (by more I mean front-end skills, knowing both front and back-end is almost impossible) this person will have more work, more clients...etc What normaly happens is, You handle a person to do the UI/UX part, than to a person who knows front-end (css, html, javascript) and than to a person who knows back-end, right? But today, I think if You want to be successful, You have to know both, graphic and front-end skills ? So it can be easier for the client. Do You get my point ? If it is not like this now, I think ina few years it will be, graphic design skills will not be enough if the clients wants logo design and website, He will go for the designer who as both skills, and not asking for 2 people to do 2 things that only one designer can do.

*You should not say graphic designers should code because. a graphic designer can do many sorts of work like logo design, business cards, icons, 3d, advertising design posters...and much more those don't require any kind of coding but I'll agree for UX/UI I will say yeah* ✅

What other skills would you recommend learning? Do you experience working in large groups on a Dailey basis? So group /speaking skills for example. Or maybe you could share what you do on your average day as a ui/ux designer, just to give us an insight on what this career would be like.
@MikeLocke

Yes, speaking skills does come into play a lot as you will be doing a lot of presenting of your ideas to stakeholders and things like that. Being a good team player, speaking, good listener, confident in your proposals are some good things to learn when working in a larger team. I'll touch on my day to day in a video.

I would like to know if there is a way to create smooth page transitions when going back and forth to all the pages. Is jquery the only solution for this task ? I would really appreciate your advice on this.

Let's say, you create a file save name as any name you like but save it with the format like xxx.css then inside the xxx.css file you create class or id, then at the main html file you use division command to call the css id or class that you have created. css example: .container (this is class) { } #mytype (this is id) { } HTML example contents Or contents

Thanks for your videos ! They are very helpful. I'm in school now for web design, and feel a little nervous about getting into the field after I finish. What do you think about locations to live to get a job when I finish school? I'm in Jacksonville, Florida and I've heard it's very difficult to get a job in anything tech here. Would you recommend me moving to Atlanta, Georgia? What are your thoughts on this?

Hi Michael, Is Fireworks Dead or Alive? I follow you due to mutual Fireworks enthusiasm! I keep hearing from various "unreliable" resources that Fireworks is dead, obsolete. I have been a fan/follower/ true living believer in Fireworks. When requesting Adobe Create Cloud Suite in my corporate license, was declined due to cost/budget, and advised to pair down to perhaps one program vs. entire suite. I selected Fireworks. Covers: vector drawing, bitmap editing, photoshop layering, optimization,javascript for hover menus, table layout for html. I especially prefer to optimize my graphic files as png. My goal is to progress to video. I'm a former Macromedia Fireworks, Freehand, Pagemaker. (Prior typesetter/keyliner/stripper before desktop publishing came online!) Spurred on in 1995 met Terry White - Mac User Group Detroit here in the D! What can you tell me/ us about the future of Fireworks? Is it supported going forward in Adobe?
@MikeLocke
@MikeLocke 9 жыл бұрын
It's definitely alive. Adobe still supports it, still sell it, still offers it as a stand-alone product and apart of their Creative Cloud Subscription suite. As long as these things hold true, its still alive. The only news we've heard from Adobe on this almost 2 years ago (may 2013) was that they will not develop any new features for it. Aside from that, its still alive. I use it for 99% of all my work, have been since 2000/2001. Its still the best software for UI/UX Design work kzbin.info/www/bejne/mF6wf2pshK9qfas ... use it, enjoy it, stop worrying about if its dead or not. I've been saying this for the past 2 years to people. I'm sure I'll be saying this for the next 5 years or so. ;)

Thanks for the video Mike. What about animation? Because a lot of platforms strongly rely on meaningful animations like iOS or Android Lollypop? Is knowing After Effects important for UI/UX Design?
@MikeLocke
@MikeLocke 9 жыл бұрын
Animation does play a role in mobile and on the web. But Its not something you need to code, you just need to understand where these animations or transitions take place. You relay this to the developer and provide examples of what the animation should be like and the Front-End developer should be able to accomplish it using jQuery, CSS3, etc.

Adobe Muse seems like a great tool, haven't used it fully for any project. But I don't think it allows you to view the source code. When learning HTML/CSS, always need an app that allows you to view the design and source code.

+wee almond Start building up a portfolio. This will be your golden ticket to getting a job. Regardless of how much code you know you have to prove it with websites. If you don't have any clients just start by making demo sites to showcase your skills. Here's a quick checklist to get in the field of web design. 1.) Learn HTML5 and CSS3. 2.) Learn Sketch, Photoshop, and Illustrator. 3.) Learn bootstrap or foundation. 4.) Understand responsive design. 5.) Use a grid system for your layouts. 6.) Learn javascript and jquery (at least the basics). 7.) Learn and use Github. 7.) Build up your portfolio with sites. 8.) Start applying for jobs. When a potential employer sees your resume the first thing they're gonna do is looks at your work. Without a strong portfolio, you won't get passed this stage. The next step is usually a simple test on HTML and CSS. Javascript and jquery in some cases. If you get passed that you'll get a face to face interview. This may also include more test. I've been a web designer for over 8+ years and this basically how it works these days. As a side note in some cases, your design skills alone can get you a job, but those jobs are hard to come by. Mostly likely coding skills will be required. This is also true for UI/UX designers. Follow these steps and I promise ya you'll be successful. Best of luck!
