This song had so many parts relating to my Master Class Coordination Techniques, that I uploaded the whole thing. As described in the Video Intro, this is a drums-only version of the song "A View from the Top of the World" off of the Dream Theater album with the same title. The techniques are discussed in my Master Classes and are the foundation of Rhythm Knowledge, Volume Three, "The Ultimate Stickings, " as well as the crux of my "Coordination Zoom Class" Video available on my Vimeo Channel. Sorry if you do not know this song to follow along, especially as you cannot hear anything during the middle 'break' section.

Funny story i lived in Newtonville Right across the street from the new Newton North High School we both went to the same school it opened in 1974 i was Class of 1976 i was on the Swimming and Dive team i pursued the Diving end and was number 3 in the states ill never forget my coach Ben Merritt the nicest guy on earth i was at the Pool 6:30am Monday through Friday Practicing, showered and in Homeroom by 8:20am every day like clockwork im certain we met i became a Drummer in Boston Bands during the late 70's early 80's i played for 3 years in a famous popular band back than called the Lines i recorded three albums with them and one video in NY City it was a song called in my car, it was number one on WAAF and WBCN for weeks and number one over in Europe on their MTV called Music Box for over two months and it was on MTV for ages, i left them after being burnt out because im never home and all the money made paid for all the records we made also our road crew playing out every weekend Bunrattys, TT the Bears, The Channel, The Rat 🤣 , i was a Studio Drummer for a while played on some heavy hitters from Boston, also did some Recording at SIR recording studios in Manhattan NY that was a trip i met Billy Idol and Brian Titchy his Drummer one weekend we were both there recording ,and long story short got out of the music business and Opened a Ferrari and Lamborghini Franchise till retiring a few years ago, i still own my favorite Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. Ok now you, I've followed you with DT for 13 years and when i heard they got rid of you to get their Berklee College Of Music member back not only was i crushed but i was pissed and as God is my witness and im sure I'll have Zollions of followers agreeing with me that DT just wanted to get their roomate back, not taking much from Portnoy but not only are you a superior Drummer to him but you have personality and it shows in your presence onstage , the rest of the band is like watching the living Dead! Not a single one of them have an ounce of stage presence Myung, Patrucci, Rudess all have no personality or know how to engage the audience which leads me to LaBrie aside from him having the most stage presence and audience interaction its unfortunate to say that his Voice has finally given out to all his years of singing, i no longer will or have the need or desire to follow DT without you behind the kit and i wish you all the success from my ❤ you are truly a one of a kind Drummer and how DT treated you when Portnoy came sniffing around was very unprofessional which only shows their true colors! Your a better person Mike and you deserve nothing but the best life has to offer! One thing is for sure you definitely have this fellow Newton North High Brother in your Corner! 🥁 ✌🏼

I can’t see this song ever being played again. Or the Alien. If MP’s comments in a recent interview are correct (he said he’s happy to do what the band want, but there’s plenty of material before 2010, or words to that effect), it sounds like he’s already building up to ignoring the last 13 years. I saw them twice before MP left, and 6 times with MM. if they stop playing MM’s stuff, I won’t be going to see them again. The last 13 years’ music is, for me, the best music they’ve ever produced, and certainly the best drumming. They didn’t win a Grammy before this album, and the song, the Alien, according to an interview with JP, was based on one of Mike Mangini’s ideas. Thanks for such a unique and amazing contribution, Mike 🤘🤘🤘

MP said something more like “he’s happy to play mangini era songs if that’s what the band want, but is mostly looking forward to playing the albums he played on again live most of all because there’s so many songs that he hasn’t played in years” and I think that’s to be expected. I also doubt they have any intention to ignore 13 years of music. Maybe the first tour they will not play much because it’s the official reunion tour, but I’m sure they will add more songs as time goes on. This split was as drama free as it gets. No reason to ignore the era.

@@michaelcarra4080 If he hasn't played his own songs in years it just means he needs to practice the catalogue before touring , NOT to make the fans have to wait for him. Why should they. I think it's a joke to only play material from what he the cry baby recorded. It's not our problem he wants to run things his way so not to play MM parts - it's not MP world it's DT.
@michaelcarra4080
@michaelcarra4080 7 ай бұрын
He will play whatever the bands chooses to play man. It’s not about him not knowing the catalog. It’s the fact that many fans that missed that line up wants to see them play that era. Like I stated earlier… this is the most drama free split. All drama is from the fan base not the band or even Portnoy. Clearly a number of fans dig the Mangini era more, and that’s cool, but many want to see those classics played with that line up. Fact is nothing is written in stone yet. We will see what they do, but it won’t be a shocker if they focus on the first 10 albums on that first tour. Anyone that has a problem with that can just skip that tour.

I think it's bs that Mangini was judged on how well he could play Portnoy parts from both the band and listener's yet when Portnoy talks he gets to choose whether he wants to play Mangini era songs or not and the fans are ok with that then they have the gall to compare the two with a bias for Portnoy. Portnoy is a delusional ego maniac, just listen to the way he talks about DT now as if to this day he owns the band. How weak and egotistical to ignore an entire decade + of DT material. Truth is he can't play Manginis parts satisfactorily, plain and simple. If you disagree it's only because you're a Portnoy simp. And for those who are so happy to have him back in the band, you act like Mangini era albums were 1. So much worse than previous DT albums and 2. Despite the brilliant next level drumming that actually existed the material you act like it's Manginis fault when he was treated like a second rate member the entire time. Please don't act like there weren't far worse DT albums during the Portnoy era, not everything was Images and Words or Metropolis.

DT were the only band that could be able to display and create with your genius, no other band could showcase the true extent of your brilliance or genius or even hint at your beautiful world Mike but unfortunately as much of an amazing professional as you are not to admit so and take it with generosity, the band completely screwed you and now I see are businessmen who absolutely don't deserve you. I have been an obsessive DT fan since 1995, their music was like air to me. But my appreciation and dedication to your craft Mike has now moved me away from them and a Mike Mangini fan for the rest of my days. I hope you will find it in yourself to focus on writing and releasing material, collaborating with the greatest musicians in the world so that you can explore and inspire and showcase the depth of your genius to your fans. Best wishes and I look forward to the most incredible drum work and creativity I will ever hear. You didn't lose out, it's really DTs loss.

Having played Bach fugues myself for 20 years now, I cannot help but notice multiple rhythmic lines being guided simultaneously throughout. Been lucky enough, and so grateful, to see DT 4 times with You!!! Witnessed this peak DT composition being brought to life in 2022. Also feeling sad that I'll never have the chance of hearing it live again. Thank You! 👊🏻

After they kicked you out in such a way, I really lost interest in DT trying to rehash their 2010 formula...At least you´re still sharing these really cool bits. I am glad to expand from the double kick flams and 16th notes to actually melodic alternating stroke fills.

You remind me of a combination of Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, Jeff Porcaro, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Terry Bozzio. You'll always be the soul of DT for me. You play like you genuinely love the music. You are a legit "one of a kind" musical phenomenon.

Listen to Mike Mangini is the truth to recognize , how wide the world of drumming is, and there is every day to explore new aspects. MM is a fantastic drummer and a great inspiration for me. I am 57 years old now. There's a lot of more stuff to learn...😊

Absolutely amazinig, the sheer mastery needed to perform that perfectly is just unparalleled, it's mindblowing. The energy, emotions, and fun interactions with Jordan are also a real treat to see. I'm truly saddened they let you go from the band but I'm a fan of yours for life. Onward and upward, love ya Mike, you're the best!

Do you still prefer Portnoy in DT? IMO Mangini has cemented himself as the superior drummer on his last album with DT.
