Thank you, Mike, for starting to upload all this material! It gives me the impression that while you were in the group, you didn’t have as much freedom to do so. For years, I’ve been watching or listening to your performances with DT, and then come the Portnoy fans who have no idea what technical resources on the instrument really are. Most of them aren’t even drummers and just talk nonsense. They view it from the perspective of the artist's "legacy" since his beginnings, which defines a style-I respect that-but they don’t have the mental tools to provide a technical explanation that puts you ABOVE Portnoy’s level. It’s valid to recognize him for the meaning of the legacy I mentioned earlier, and I respect that, but as a drummer myself, I don’t use that criterion to evaluate you. I see Mike's technical resources as limited. Specifically, he doesn’t seem to go beyond 1-and-1 fills with the snare and toms, 2 bass drums with 2 hands, or 2 bass drums with 4 hands. I don’t see much more than that, though he executes it excellently, and his power is crushing. However, in your performances, I see FAR more resources than the ones I mentioned. Your left-hand skill and your ability to integrate a symmetrical kit showcase your abilities above any drummer who simply sets up their kit for their dominant hand. Even the one bass drum/one-hand high-speed patterns distributed symmetrically-something you’ve been doing for many years-require a level of training that not every right- or left-handed drummer can achieve. So now, the challenge is to see Mike try to perform DT’s songs where you created your magic. I know he can do it, but he won’t have the finesse to execute them with your resources. He’ll do it his way, but in my opinion, this will lower the rhythmic level of the band from now on. That doesn’t mean the band won’t become even more successful, though, as Mike M. is a standard-bearer for the band’s image and collaboration, something crucial for those who value DT for its essence in compositions. I don’t think most fans will stop to reflect on the points I’m making about how much more complex your performances are. It’s a free world, and I wanted to share this with you. It would be an honor for you to hear my perspective. I’m from Argentina, and I saw you live during your last performance here. I enjoyed it immensely! Warm regards!

Mr. Mangini, if you ever read this: every single album you made with DT blew my mind and expanded my conception of the capabilities of a drummer in many ways (artistically, rhythmically, rudiments, coordination, etc). And every single album i thought it couldn't get any more technical and complex and amazing than that. Thank you for always proving me wrong and raising the bar every single time. You are a drum genius, a true master of your craft, and a big inspiration to improve (or sometimes quit lol) Thank you for your time with DT and your contributions.

Mr Mangini! I'm your age and I know how difficult it is to stay physically fit for this! You have elevated Dream Theater to the highest expression of excellence in complexity and no one is going to take it away from you! Those of us who understand this know that when there is a problem it is broken by the thinnest, weakest thread, but it turns out that you made thousands of fans of the band happy to see you live and unleash your full potential! It's unfortunate that the one who comes back won't be able to do 1/4 of what you did again in the band! Greetings from Argentina.

MP started DT and will finish it. That’s how we fans wanted it. Respect for Mangini but don’t compare they are different. MP brings the X factor and sauce Mangini hasn’t got. Look at all the other bands and projects MP has collaborated on. Just insanely great music - SOA, LTE, Transatlantic, Winery Digs and many more.

Unfortunately, Mr. Mangini's technical prowess didn't necessarily equate to the fluidity and cohesion that Portnoy could create. Yes,Mr. Mangini is seriously talented. There is no doubt about it. However, I felt like his technique was full of visual parlor tricks which didn't add anything musically / audibly profound. Plus, I feel like without Portnoy's contribution to Progressive Metal, Mangini would not have had the foundation to elaborate on.

@muhammadsyarief5169 күн бұрын
Just my humble thought, MP last album with DT was "Black Cloud and Silver Linings". Yes, their creativity at that time just like covered by a Black Cloud, nothing new, from song structure, riff, especially drum composition. They hope for a "Silver Linings", but shocked by the "one sided ego" decision by MP. Finally, they got the Silver Linings with new drummer, Mr. Mike.Mangini. So they released a new album titled "A Dramatic Turn of Events". Absolutely dramatic turn of event, in a positive way. They move on and on with MM, finally released self titled album, The Astonishing (Their best album from song writing and storytelling perspective IMHO, its really ASTONISHING), Distance Over Time, and finally A View From The Top Of The World. Yes, they are already on the top of the world when the album released. They finally got the grammy with a sick song, and create this 10/10 epic song for the last track. Finally, they feel the peak of their career, and they miss the feeling of the journey to the top. One thing missing on their "mind journey", yes, the missing part was their old friend, their partner since their young age, Mr. Mike Portnoy. So they decided to ask him to coming home, enjoy their "nostalgia", before DT officially announced their retirement. After hear their new single Night Terror, I'm sure DT would never progress anymore like they did in 13 years with MM. They're back to the past, and would retire with their "family" at the end. By the way, thank you so much for you Mike Mangini, for 13 years full of greatness, for making my favourite band challenge their potential to the limit, I'll miss your time in DT. Keep posting your videos with DT, because your era was the golden and peak era of DT 🙌🏻

Mike's orchestration is very cool. I noticed there are choice note placements that alllow each instrument to shine then bring them back to a single unit throughout the song. This blew my mind as it's easier to just add a complimentary rhythm but the way this is constructed, the drums make the song feel like an orchestra! Sick!!
