Hey Friends... well, these new videos sure have caused some people to get quite angry with me and I'm not really sure why... My entire career, I've played and taught this song the way I explain it. Recently I saw a Transcription on Drumeo, and I really trust their transcribers as they are great! The Transcription by Sahand Kahksar is just great!! Please don't think I'm taking anything away from your current knowledge, and even if the current live drummer plays with Quarter notes on the kick, that's great, but challenge yourself to the way I show it from the Transcription I trust. Thank you all for your continued support! Happy Drumming Everyone!

Rick Beato has a video on this tune and he's got the original stems from the recording. When he solos the (programmed) drums, you can hear the kick is playing the shuffle, you're right about that. The punchy synth bass reinforces it even more heavily. But there's nothing "wrong" with playing quarter notes on the kick. They both sound really good! For me, I enjoy using a combination of both, e.g. straight quarters in the verse and instrumentals sections, then shuffle in the chorus, to add some more intensity. Or adding the odd shuffle bar in here and there for some variety. The reason you made some people "quite angry" is probably the whole vent about how everyone else playing it wrong brings tears to your eyes... As a first time viewer, it didn't come across very well. My honest feedback.

@@samsambanana hello and thank you for the message. It’s great to hear that someone agrees that there is a shuffle on the kick (gracias amigo). Regarding your comment that you don’t care for, being a first time viewer you don’t know my sense of humour… I’ve been teaching full time for 25 years and I joke around all the time, but that being said, when someone with millions of subscribers and millions of views teaches something incorrect, that bothers me and yes, it does bring tears to my eyes. Thats my honest opinion. Cheers my friend. Happy Drumming

Nice. As some have mentioned, the kick is not playing shuffle beat, the bass guitar is. But, high hat is a tricky one for sure. Sounds great doesn’t it. One of those songs that you never tire of hearing and I firmly believe that the drum part is the reason.

Great video. I actually learned this beat not by listening to Tears for Fears but by listening to drummer Scott Rockenfield on The Whisper by Queensryche. His kick drum is not as busy throughout the entire song but he does throw in some variations.

It's funny- at first watch it seems not so hard to play, but trust me it is! It took me a while to get it, but once I did it became natural. One of my friends who is pro touring drummer had trouble with this too. But don't give up- you'll get it!

I see so many vids on this, and I've got the basic beat down. The trickiest thing for me and i don't see anyone cover it is the fills and getting back to the beat. That is the hard part. I try to add the fills and I cant get back to the beat!

Good explanation. Never played this out live, but I did this one during Covid when I live-streamed my practice sessions on r/Redditsessions. The only difference I did was I played 8 note triplets on the hi hats and accented the offbeat like you play (I think there’s a shaker on the original track and I wanted to simulate that)

Well, there's obviously many ways to play this groove and successfully support the song. You're groove sounds great, but if you carefully listen to the original track, the programmed kick is definitely playing quarter notes. The shuffle comes from a bass synth or other sample that doesn't even resemble a kick drum sound. I would not have even commented had you not been so adamant about so many bad representations of this groove on line, and you're going to set the record straight. Bottom line, a programmed drum part might, and in this case does, yield many interpretations, including your own, which is valid, but not what I would play. Peace!
