My first experience with grain bags was with a French farmer in Duck Lake sask who had a massive feedlot. That year everybody had wet grain like 20%+. What he did was purchase all he could and at that time put it into silage bags similar to what you have, grain bag technology didn’t exist then. I looked at his operation as I was unloading and he asked me “well what do you tink?” I replied “that’s the craziest thing I have ever seen.” Wrong reply! Looked at me and said “YOU TINK I’M CRAZY “!. Ha we had a laugh after .

Hey guys! Mike, I was thinking about the damage the critters cause to the grain bags and how to maybe prevent it. Would it not be possible to use a bag from the previous season as a reinforcement layer over a new bag? or are the small grain loss and repair costs an acceptable part of the system? The sledding looked like fun but when the guy rolled off at the end I was remembering just how cold it is on bare hands. Stay safe Dave.

Smooth operation. I'm probably not going to teach you anything about akron extractors. It seems like you mentioned every weak spot that we come across also. We got rid of the shear pin in the chain case by welding the two pieces together and running Reynolds h80 chain which kept a guy having to open that chain case and playing in gear oil in the cold months a little less. Also see your pto shaft is moving in the bearing/collar. What we did was weld a washer to the end of the shaft and use the right amount of spacers/washers to butt up against the locking collar or i suppose drilling a hole in center of shaft and threading it for a bolt would also work. Another thing is to take the hitch pin slop away by running the biggest pin possible and making some sort of sleeve if the extractor has bigger hitch hole then tractor. Akron has made changes on their latest model by removing the the chain case shear pins and gearing it different in the back to move more of the load up front but there can still be improvements made on the chain tensioning set up. They keep slacking off overtime and the chain jumps so back in the gear oil you go. i think a heavy spring loaded tensioner would be mint.
@mikemitchell2554
@mikemitchell2554 3 жыл бұрын
Hey I appreciate that input! I never thought about welding it where sheer pin is.. But we think about welding the end where the PTO shaft keeps sliding around! Haha just haven't done it yet

Grain bags seem to be very labor intensive both to fill and unload. Quality of grain after storage is questionable. And the you have the cost of buying them added to the cost of labor. And what about disposable costs of the plastic waste. Are they really worth it to use other than as a emergency type storage.

When you don't have a hill in a few hundred miles and never seen a mountain, dragging your work buds behind the truck is all you got. I guess the bags are all you can do with the distance to your yard or a grain port when you are full tilt trashing the field in the fall.
