The thing about being anonymous is that you can pretend to be a list of professors even if you're a lone nutcase undergraduate who is flunking their coursework. But the thought that these might really be professors is disturbing. It's not like there aren't already a few out there tweeting wicked nonsense under their own names. It's no surprise that the same pattern of cowardly attacks we have seen levelled against Damore and Peterson are coming the way of the Sokal Squared team. Give it time, they too will be referred to indirectly in hushed tones by initial only (like "He Who Must Not Be Named"). Quote mining, false framing and mockery will continue to be a fashionable way to feign intelligence to impress all the wrong people. Those who defend them will be labelled and dismissed as "delusional fanboys", muted and blocked.

Great point. The Laurier gang of three told Lindsey Shepard that students had complained about her lesson involving Jordan Peterson. They eventually had to admit that there was no student complaint. His classes, of which I took more than my STEM degree called for, where an absolute highlight of my time at PSU because he offered us the chance to discuss all manner of weighty, thorny issues with our peers by treating us like adults and pushing us beyond our intellectual comfort zones. Peter's style of teaching is what philosophy departments should be built upon. I agree with Nayna. This is the Mean Girls "burn book." When they talked about Boghossian, et al. "devaluing the degrees of students," it confirmed something I've suspected for a while. This is the same criticism that is leveled at people like the anonymous authors of this article. They are paying attention to the criticism directed at them, noting it down, and then using the language of that criticism against people like these three. It is utterly disingenuous and spiteful. Once again, it's "idea laundering." It's completely in keeping with postmodernism, because why try to have an original thought? They would ask what *is* an original thought? To them, such a thing doesn't exist. Things like this are moves of power, not moves of reason. That's all one needs to know, and should be given all due respect, which is to say none. It's Mad Magazine shit.

I used to go to PSU. It is such a massive echo chamber, and if anyone questions their beliefs, they ostracize you. Just like they're doing to Boghossian. And not only that, but they get offended, they get loud, violent, vulgar, unprofessional... It speaks volumes to me that so much of the student body agrees with what PSU is doing, this smear campaign, and his punishment through the IRB. They have their heads so far up their own asses that they don't even see the point the three were making about the echo chamber that has become academia. Thank you, Peter Boghossian, Helen Pluckrose, and James Lindsay for your academic honesty. Thank you for pointing this out. I have no regrets about leaving PSU. I'm wondering, Is this the way Christianity also started to spread during the fall of the Western Roman Empire? Some people spreading rumors about a certain character, then other people, usually more versed and more educated ones, recognizing that the character is fictitious and the story is basically a ripoff of other mythical characters and then the people spreading the rumors portraying themselves as the victims while blaming the ones calling them out, for their false dogma, as being the oppressors?
@paulquast40046 жыл бұрын
It is, insofar as the dogmatic element of theology is concerned. You can't however, equate theology with dogmatism, per se. Besides the belief in god's existence and the truth of scripture, plus some other beliefs, theology was and is in most parts concerned with logic and reasonable arguments. All the scholastic thinkers saw themselves in the tradition of pre-christian philosophers like Aristotle and Plato. They tried to conceptualize the relationship between rationality, intellect and belief on a philosophical and rationality-based level. The belief in god is always a given, yes, and that is the dogmatic element, but that doesn't make theology dogmatic in of itself.

@@edmorphis118 God is whatever you base your morals around because when it comes down to it, religious behavior is religious behavior. Go to a rock concert and look around at how people (especially musically illiterate folk) behave regardless of their religious affiliation. There is a growing vacuum of traditional religious belief right now so other cultural spaces have completely taken it over... that's why they're arguing postmodernism is the cause. This is why it's such an awkward time for me to be an atheist; the bandwagon is full of idiots with no self-awareness or ability to analyze their own behavior.

They think it gives them the freedom to act as foolishly and maliciously as they want, as long as they can officially accuse YOU of it. Victimologists do that a lot, including politicians, educators you name it. What they don't seem to notice is that they LIE. They have become so over-confident that they lie the public in its face. I don't usually post things ever really. However this is a real problem with real world consequences. What can I do to help spread this narrative of nuance and truth to others who can fall victim to what you guys are trying to combat? I don't have social media (never liked it or cared for it) and I'm far from being a scholar to fully understand all the terminology used, but I do know what's right and what you have committed to do is the right thing. Thank you for your work. You are a beacon of hope not only for this generation, but also for those that follow.

This is just wrong on every level. I am so glad these 3 have said enough and did what they. It took real courage

I know all too well how infuriating and at times even hopeless it is to stand in front of an agry mob behind nothing more than the banner of truth. The absolute COWARDS in academia who refuse to stand up to this insanity are complicit. You are all heroes. You’re not alone. We can all see how absolutely absurd this nonsense has become and we stand together with you.

I applaud you and your colleagues. None of you have urged anything violent. None of you are alt right (not even close).

I was fortunate enough to take 4 undergraduate courses from Dr. Boghossian. He's brilliant. He provides a platform for ideas to be evaluated on their merit, evidence, etc. I don't know why his colleagues are going after him and not the currupt "academic" journals that published his bad-on-purpose papers. They have clearly shot the messenger here. My only thought is that they don't want to upset the low bar status quo these journals have for accepting papers. They need the low bar, in order to get their low quality work published, in order to keep their jobs. Also, not putting their names on that letter is cowardly.

I'm happy he is not dealing with this alone.

Isolating their victim is the purpose of all the unfounded accusations like racism and sexism. It sure helps to be a member of a team.

If a paper allows articles to be published by anonymous people I feel that paper should be held liable

Hi Mike, excellent production and very enlightening upload if not terrifying upload. I am appalled at the erosion of freedom of speech in our (American and Canadian) societies in direct conflict with our First Amendment, yes the first (USA). I thank you for taking the time to assemble these videos which provide some balance and shed the truth on these popular if not spectacular gender/racism/inequity/... issues the US/Canada media are inundating us with. Please keep on the good work and maintain your objectiveness doing your best to present both sides of the coin(s). Peace be with you, Ciao, L (USA)

I love how the entire purpose of this stunt was to prove that humanities departments have no standards when it comes to their scholarly work and a humanities department responds by immediately proving their point.

Pete's taken a real risk for something worthwhile. Hopefully those at Portland State stand with him and don't let these attacks go unanswered.
