As a huge admirer and fan of all things Canadian I don't know how I missed out on this party! Spreading the Letterkenny love around to everyone I know now, though! Wayne and the buds are so much like the people I grew up with, and I'm probably a bit like them myself; theyre very relatable to people in the Central Plains! The accent isn't even much different, we sound look more like the people in Letterkenny then we sound like people in New York or Mississippi. Unfortunately most shows take place in large coastal cities. I know more people that live in Farms like Wayne then live in tiny urban apartments like on Seinfeld, Friends Etc. I hope the show gets turned into a Blockbuster movie, so much potential!

It IS a good show with a good heart and fun and clever. And kudos to Jared and the whole crew. But the writing ISN'T flawless. It's monotonous after a while and all the characters are written in the same voice especially the female characters. They're written as bros while being sexually appealing to actual bro type dudes at the same time and again, they are written all the same, and in all the same bro voice as the other characters. The one time I saw characters written with unique / different personalities (other than the skids which are sort of unique) was the episode where Wayne uses a matchmaker service. Some of the girls not all but some were stereotypes but still unique characters from others on the show especially the matchmaker herself. Seeing how Wayne struggled to interact with them was funny and good writing. But also, we sided with him. It would be good to see different characters / types of people where in the struggling interactions, if there was struggle, we sided with those other characters now and then for a change. There was one episode that showed a kind of hipster all black wearing man bun type dude from Toronto stopping and wanting to buy some veggies from the stand (and just asking if they were organic) and that was funny cuz he was just fine and friendly but the crew wanted to make fun of him and his style anyway. And then they were put in their place when his hot girlfriend showed up and the crew were put in their place cuz that validated his manhood to them. But I wish somehow there'd been another resolution cuz that was the low hanging fruit they always go for: the women only being valid (and in this case going further in validating a guy's worth as well) if they're pleasing to the "male gaze". It's one dimensional, stereotypical, lazy and unoriginal writing. Not to mention sexist and a little mysoginistic, albeit unintentionally so. But still it matters (if one's going to discuss the pros and cons and merits and originality of the show). You can tell guys (in this case Jared and his friend who plays the pastor) are writing the girls' parts and certain types of guys (and/or views). They could stand to have some more representation in their writing help to help make the characters a little more unique and richer. Maybe that applies to all their characters but definitely the females. A few bro chicks who think and act like bros (while at the same time being sexually attractive to the bro types that they're written like) is fine but all of the females? It doesn't ring true.

Brilliant interview. I think Jared Keeso is my favourite human ever. As a screenwriter myself, it's so darn refreshing to hear that incredible dialogue - the Letterkenny lexicon - and his incredible attention to observational details. Plus, it's so difficult to find anyone with any kind of a moral compass these days, that it becomes twice as refreshing to see Keeso make common sense and good manners into a cool trait for the kids to engage with. More humans like this, please. 🙂
