I live not far from Mike and the airport he hangers at. So I'm outside and hear the loudest airplane I've heard in awhile in a flight of three. I look up and see the Orange tail and see the bikes hanging on the wings. I'm excited to see this video after seeing him flyby my house. YAHOOOO!!

I'm not close enough to regularly see planes flying in/out of the airport, but I go see friends that are next to the airport all the time.... saw Mike flying around right before Oshkosh. I'm guessing that was some of the initial flight testing.

Wondering about your swamp boat prop. It churns a ton of air and cost you a bunch of performance. Adding the drag with these bikes may mean the boat prop stays around longer? Or do you need (desire) more performance.. My thought on what to hang from Scrappy next is manned wing suits. Like a glider, you haul them up then drop them at altitude. THAT would be cool as long as it could be done safely. Great to see a video come out from you Mike !

Mike, and his helpers, have redefined the term "DIY project" and simultaneously set the bar so high that it seems unlikely that anyone will produce an arguably better designed, engineered and built vehicle, for land, sea or air travel. And, he did all of this with the utmost of humility, enthusiasm and encouragement for all that want to try. Thank you to all involved in Scrappy.

It is an extraordinarily overmatched conventional bushplane design to be sure, but even though this roided up high wing monoplane absolutely sets the standard for this class of aircraft, it most definitely isn't the most efficient design for the best possible cargo lift capacity/horse power/take off distance ratios, not by a long shot.
@michaelmartinez1345
@michaelmartinez1345 2 жыл бұрын
@@Veldtian1 what concerns me about the modifications made to this plane are: 1) How many of them have been authorised , tested and certified with the adaptations , using the STC process? 2) The use of the inset solar P.V. panels on the upper wing surface is another area of concern... Did they replace panels previously made of Aluminum? Were they installed in places where no pre-existing panels were before? The square corners of the cutouts where those P.V. panels are now installed, are possibly VERY bad areas where stress risers can form, and cause structural failure of these highly stressed areas... 3) And the welding being done on the brackets for the loading of the motor-bicycles, should not have been done. Solid aluminum rivets should have been used instead, because welding sets-up fatigue in the aluminum, by heating up the welded area to above the critical temperature, then anneals the welded aluminum making it softer in the heat affected area, and later-causing it to crack as the areas that did not get up over 475°F. during the welding process, retained their original temper and strength... So soft metal being blended with hard metal causes accelerated cracking & metal fatigue. Hopefully, no welding was done to the airframe by ANYBODY other than the original manufacturer...

Going along with your backwoods rescue theme. Why not create a rescue drop pod? For those situations where you need to get supplies to stranded hikers, etc but have no place to land, have a releasable pod with a parachute that you can drop. You could enclose food, shelter, medical supplies, radios, etc. They could be self-powered with a small battery.

Three years ago at Oshkosh i kept swinging by Draco to hopefully meet Mike ( I did get to meet him this year and see scrappy. Life highlight for sure) anyway i had just left the Garmin tent and headed to the hangers behind, I saw someone familiar but not who I would place in aviation. I thought I figured it out and had to go ask. Sure enough it was Dean Kamen the inventor of the Segway. Another life highlight. When I saw the Segway bikes I was surprised they don’t know each other. Keep on the lookout at Oshkosh Mike, maybe you and Dean can collab or get you a bike sponsorship lol. Those things are sweet!

Perhaps you could attach self-inflating life rafts (some of which are designed to alternatively act as a tent for land rescue operations); those tend to start out at around 50kg / 110lb for a ~4 person raft but can go up to about 3x that weight for 10-25 person rafts (those would likely be overkill though).

14:06 for rescue OPs where you cannot land, you could have an on-site drop pod that contains basic medical equipment, food, water, the works. Stuff that would prolong the life of the person in need. I mean, one could argue that's one in one thousand situations, but ya know, better to have and not want, than want and not have, i mean Scrappy can land just about anywhere, but that's not everywhere, and maybe there's situations that warrant such a pod. In theory, it could be long shelf (outside water) with military rations and exist on standby for the right kind of conditions. Dunno, just an idea, you'd know best if there's a reason for something like this to exist.

Mike Patey, you have brought to life the fictional ‘60s “Thunderbirds, International Rescue”! You have designed & built an aircraft so immensely capable, fans suggesting an array of multi-mission pods/payloads, many you have or are considering, all seem possible. Exciting times!

As this is a SAR bird, how about having the capability of an air-drop survival supply & support? Auto deploy a chute on drop?

Static line chute with some basic release shackles. Would be pretty simple to set up...except for running the pull cord for the release. Hmm, maybe something radio controlled for the release system.

What an incredible job on the whole project, amazing! I see one or two things that might be a problem. The front tire might spin while flying, possibly very fast, clamping or strapping the brake handle will eliminate the spin. The second thing is i question an aluminum pin for holding the bike. Why not steel of some sort?
@ChandraSlyFoxPatey
@ChandraSlyFoxPatey 2 жыл бұрын
Great thoughts, we wondered about the tires as well. Since recording this video, Mike has flown several times with the bikes and found that the tires don’t spin. The pin is hardened stainless steel w/ a 9,200 lb load rating per pin.

@@ChandraSlyFoxPatey at the very least he could make carbon fiber caps to cover the spokes which likely has the largest amount of drag. That's why all speed bikes have solid Wheels no spokes! 🤠🐂🏞️🛩️

You once asked for ideas to help general aviation. Is it possible to design a useful electric aircraft? Models for sale today manage 1 hours or so. But they may be a few years behind the real development curve? Is a real electric aircraft an idea? Is it doable?
@austinsmith9413
@austinsmith9413 2 жыл бұрын
I built an electric paramotor which is a manned electric aircraft. In the end electric is totaly doable for aviation, but costs more money upfront and cuts range to about 1/2 to 1/3 of what a comparable combustion powered aircraft can do.

If you're asking for suggestions on what to mount to the wings I have the following two suggestions: 1. For back country rescue or resupply you could add droppable pods filled with food, tent, survival gear, etc.) that could be dropped to stranded individuals not yet reachable by ground crews. You'd need only add a release mechanism on each mount. 2. Although it might seem a bit nutty, you could hang two patient litters (enclosed) to evacuate wounded from back country locations if conditions were difficult for other rescue resources.

It's the enthusiasm I love.! I suffer from PTSD, Anxiety & severe depression, so enthusiasm & motivation are often extremely difficult for me to muster. The easiest thing for me to do is close the curtains, turn my phone off, climb under the quilt & feel sorry for myself.. Seeing guys like this can sometimes (if the stars & planets align & my mind is receptive enough) ignite the spark that gets me up off my arse to actually do something.. Taking out or working on my RC models is an ideal result for me. ENTHUSIASM, INSPIRATION, POSITIVITY & A DASH OF HOPE. Thank you Mike Patey.! Stay safe out there mate & best wishes from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🙏❤️.
