I build something like that for around 200 bucks. Cheap thermal imager from china, mounted behind the car grill (it’s a tiny device), connected to a cheap android TV box. The box gets power when i start the car, it automatically loads the App and mirrors it on the infotainment system. It’s cheap, it works great (only a slight delay), it’s absolutely invisible and it was quite easy to install. If your infotainment doesn’t support screen mirroring you might need a cheap 80 bucks tablet to receive the signal (if you want a wireless connection like i have).
@MikesCarInfoАй бұрын
You should make a video on it.

@Mix1mumАй бұрын
@@erebostdI'm interested in seeing that set up. Personally I want the image splashed up on the windshield, heads up display like. I feel like there's an answer here somewhere, to my desire to not have to look away from the windshield yet still get all the relevant mechanical info I want as a conscientious operator. Maybe a 5% tint (maybe more, idk)on the glass to give the projector something to "bite* on to would have enough opacity that everything would come across as augmented reality. Maybe a smart screen with a program to compress light intensity so oncoming headlights wouldnt be blinding anymore. I'm GONNA crack this nut. And get it all simplified down to a film or screen that can be installed on any car, not just new telemetry-laden, surveillance vehicles. To me it's a safety issue, and we have the tech to do it better, we just need to make it accessible and available

Lexus had something similar to this in the late 90s on the LX 470 in the United States. It used a light emitting infrared set up. There were two emitters in the lower grill and a receiver, then the image was projected on a heads up display on the lower portion of the windshield on the driver side. Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes and Audi eventually offered a similar system

I made my own infrared system years and years ago. Wasn't very expensive, but no pedestrian/vehicle software of course and video display was clunky. And not in color since it didn't do thermal. You can buy your own infrared emitters if you want to increase range. But no huge, ugly sensor on the roof either. Everything was in the grille. But the problem is where do you look? You can't look at the screen all the time. You need to be looking out the windshield. That's what's great about the alerts on the modern devices.

Tremendous video, thanks. I’d mention that glass blocks IR so the camera cannot be mounted inside looking through the windshield. If the image could be converted to a reflected mode, it seems it would be ideal for a HUD type view reflected either by the inner surface of the windshield or by a transparent screen. I don’t think the exterior mount stuck to the top of the car is going to be popular. Perhaps a front license plate mount option might be possible. In cars with a grille, behind the grille might be an option.

You don’t have to worry about it when you’re driving , but consider this . Thieves love stealing stuff like this , because it provides a big reward when the thief sells it . The magnet allows you to take off your roof and hide it in your car . The sticky tape , yes , how would you like to get a garage to repaint your car ? The idea of putting that system in under your car hood , is good idea too . Just get it out of sight .

It's claims of working effectively in fog may be overstated. Yes, it can identify cars, people and animals in fog but the view ahead may be quite blurry, except where the AI identified items. There are scientifically based reasons for this but don't think you can use this during thick fog (especially at night) and drive fast; you can't do that if you want to be safe. I've stored my original NV2 (converted to use GoPro mounts) on a super strong magnetic mount and keep it under my hood in the far, driver's side, corner of my engine compartment, shielded from any heat and protected from thieves. When needing to use it I mount it high over the hood (to keep it from engine heat possibly blurring the view). When done, it takes seconds to store it back under the hood. Otherwise it's very effective. The improvements in this unit are very worthwhile in terms of brightness, loudness, types of reactions to different dangers, etc.

I would also throw a faraday cage on top of it, for I'm not fond of having an open mic inside the car, and that device also having GPS? Or I'd disable the microphone at the hardware level. I don't know. Still not a bad idea, safety wise. In some areas of the world, mainly northern USA, Canada, Australia, and many other countries where you have live cattle roaming around the highways, and roads, it's still a good product. In my opinion , the thermal viewing angle needs to be 180°

@javc7433 Someone might make something like that, but it would cost $15,000 or more.

@@MikesCarInfo I often drive through the forest at night and regularly see deer , i've had many close calls with them . They tend to dart out in front of you , unfortunately it happened to me a few nights ago , about 100 yards in front of me about 6 deer ran across the road , i slowed down anticipating there might be more , i continued driving slowly and it was all clear in front of me , then suddenly i heard an almighty bang from the off/side of my car , a deer slammed into my car , didn't see it , just the loud bang . I pulled over and looked around , no deer anywhere , my driver door and rear off/side passenger door has multiple deep dents . Thanks for your reply . The benefits of this technology is a must , in the name of road safety , it would greatly cut the number of animal deaths with this warning system , and insurance claims , but the cost needs to be affordable to the average driver . As with new technologies it will take time for the price to come down when it has reached mainstream status .

If they make this so it is not outside my car (theft) and can make it connect to my OEM screen, I am in.

That is what the Flir system does. See my Jeep Grand Cherokee video.

It would TOTALLY violate Federal Regulations if I put one of these in my airplane. LOL.

Not interested with on-the-roof mounting. Behind the grill, sure.

Says its a fraction of the cost, 1/2 isn't much of a fraction at MSRP lmfao
