This video is the best and simplest guide to doing timelapses for the A73 or otherwise!!! I watched it and then read/watched a million other guides on timelapses and then kept asking myself 'where was that video that provided a really simple explanation of different interval settings under different conditions. I was so happy when I found it again. You rock Mike.

That's great to hear, I'm so glad my tutorial helped!! One thing I try and do is make them as simple as possible...Most elements of photography are fairly straight forward but so many tutorials and videos make them so more complicated than they need to be. Keep checking back as I do make 2 tutorials a week, every week! Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting, much appreciated! ... and if you have any ideas for future tutorials, do let me know, I'm always open to suggestions! 😁👍

I just want to echo all the complimentary comments, Mike. Excellent full packed with useful information and no crap! From setup to shooting, then editing time-lapse and the end product your video has now been saved for future reference and learning. I've been a stills shooter for many years but after switching from Canon to Sony, the options available on the A7 series are so feature packed they beg to be used to their full potential. Top class!

Thanks Mike, a few years old but still an excellent and relevant video. I did some more experimenting and testing on this feature in various modes for others that may have my questions. I shoot a lot of sunset into astro timelapse which requires a huge change in exposure to Speed, Aperture and ISO. I start at usual daylight settings of say 1/125th, F8, ISO100 but by night time 2 hrs later I need 8.0 secs, F1.2 and ISO3200. The problem is almost every mode locks the Aperture at whatever you start with therefore as it gets darker you can never get enough light because your aperture is locked at F8 or whatever you started with. This equals dismal failure - EXCEPT? EXCEPT when you use Speed (S) Mode. In S mode you set the shutter speed to whatever works during daylight and as it gets darker, the aperture becomes wider and wider until the limit of your lens is reached. Then start increasing your shutter speed during the shoot bit by bit until you get to your 8 or 10 secs that you need in the dark. If your ISO is set to Auto, it then starts increasing the ISO as it gets darker. If you had your ISO locked in at say 100 originally, then you can increase the ISO during the shoot until you get to about 3200. Once you get to around 8 or 10 secs with your ISO at around 3200 (either auto ISO or manually), then you can walk away and enjoy a warm coffee in the dark while it does the rest. It works extremely well with little to no flicker. You can also choose whether you want a constant shoot interval, say 10 secs, right from the start and just adjust shutter speed as you go OR let the shutter speed override the interval as you go. This just results in different time effects during playback and is a personal choice. Be aware that Shoot interval priority is locked in the default off setting so your selected shutter speed will always override your Shooting interval.

Don't you have problem with the focus when the aperture changes?
@rareviewphotography Жыл бұрын
@ G'day Antonio, only if you have a very close foreground object. I tend to use wide angle lenses during my astro timelapse which have a very large depth of field anyway. If your foreground object is more than about 10m away, everything will be in focus. For eg, if your object is 10m away, a 20mm lens at F1.8 on a full frame sensor will have a depth of field of 4.29m to infinity. Everything within that range is in focus. If you are using longer lenses or your subject is only 1 or 2 m away, then this may become a problem but up to around a 25mm lens, opening the aperture generally has no effect on focus.

@ Good Luck and no worries. In fact since then I have discovered with my A7m3, I can actually use full program mode now and set the shutter speed range to a max of say 8secs and ISO range up to say 3200 and it does a superb job with little to any flicker. I think the new modern cameras seem to have overcome the old limitations of "Manual for everything!" Cheers.

Hey Mike, awesome video as always. I just wanted to mention a couple extra things I have figured out with the new intervalometer. First, although it doesn't create a time lapse video that can be downloaded, you can preview it in camera. Took me forever to find a video that showed it but if you go to the playback tab in the menu it is in there. I found some instructions on how to use that but it's pretty straight forward once you get there. The other thing I was going to mention is that I just set my back screen to off rather than setting it to viewfinder. The viewfinder uses a lot of power so if I just turn the back screen off when shooting then it isn't running either screen. I learned a lot going through your video though. I know Sony isn't paying you... but they SHOULD BE!
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Seth, I’ll check out the preview option tomorrow...and that’s great that you can turn off the screen without having the evf on. I knew the evf used a bit of power, but was running out of time to get the video done in time today. 👍

@@mikesphotography It was free preset/plug-in from an F-Stoppers article in 2017. It was really laborious to edit and then attempt to save the RAW images through the slide-show module in Lightroom. Great tutorial Mike! I wanted to ask you a question regarding ISO. If I'm shooting in aperture priority and using the interval function, do you recommend using auto ISO? My intention is to shoot primarily sunrise time lapse and starting with relatively low light. Perhaps enable the priority for interval would be helpful and just keep a set ISO?
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Frank!! If you do shoot in auto ISO, make sure you set ISO auto minimum shutter speed to around half the time of your interval time...this will make sure your shutterspeed drops all the way to the interval time and no further before the ISO starts to ramp up....or for a sunrise the iso will drop down and meet that shutter speed. Does that make sense? I'd try it in both to see which one does better. I'm hopefully going to be doing a sunset/sunrise timelapse tutorial soon, once I get the chance to get some time lapses of those two scenarios. Thanks for watching. 😁👍

1. Can you set any Sony A7 series cameras to .5 second interval shooting mode? 2. Can you set it to fire burst between intervals?
@chetandoshi70534 жыл бұрын
While shooting timelapses using interval function, I cant seem to find a way to review the playback histogram. All it shows is live histogram and not a playback histogram between the shots. I believe Nikon offers a choice. Am I missing something here with A7III? This is particularly useful when making ramping the exposure manually and where I’d rather refer to a playback image and a histogram rather than a live view histogram
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, unfortunately it doesn't show the image it has just taken between shots, just the live view...including the histogram if you have that display selected. A preview option would be a good addition to this function.

Is an intervalometer needed anymore? After all, the A7iii can be remotely controlled with the Image Edge Mobile app. The new firmware makes timelapse available. The only use of an intervalometer that I can think of is if I need a shutter speed longer than 30 seconds. True? I like to know your opinion. Thank you.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, You’re correct, the only use now for an intervalometer is long exposures over 30 seconds...other than that...it is obsolete. 👍
@davyfbkk5 жыл бұрын
It's quite risky using your mobile to remotely control your camera for TL shooting because of the likelihood of a lost connection and most TLs would need about an hour or more, so it's impractical to have your phone controlling the camera consistently for that length of time.
@paulvo16215 жыл бұрын
David Found Your point about the connectivity between the A7iii and my mobile phone is well taken. I used to use an intervalometer with my first Canon, but mostly as a cable release for long exposure shots. With my last Canon, I used its app on my mobile in lieu of a cable release. I did the same with my first Sony camera, the A6500. On rare occasions, connectivity between my camera and my mobile was choppy, causing stressful moments and some missed opportunities. But are these rare connectivity issues enough to justify yet another device in my bag? My current day job requires me to travel a lot. I am always on the lookout for simplifying my gears. Your reply to my post is very much appreciated.
@davyfbkk5 жыл бұрын
@@paulvo1621 Hi Paul I suppose it really depends on the subject you're shooting for intervalometer work mostly the onboard intervalometer on the A73 is perfectly fine for most applications. I also have a wireless intervalometer remote control which works perfectly fine but I still prefer just to use the in cam app because it's stable and the camera can be left to do the job all alone if it's in a safe location..I recently shot a 1.5hr TL of lake scene with sun setting and just left it alone while I carried on shooting with my A7RM3 for other locations and all went well. I don't shoot astro style and don't need very long exposures so it's fine

Hi Mike, thanks so much for this tutorial. Very well explained. Thanks for taking all the time! One question. I am about to shoot a day to night time-lapse of the NYC Skyline with the A7III in two days.The Lens will have max aperture of 2.8. I plan to shoot Aperture priority mode. Do you have any recommendations for me for the starting values? I don't want to end in two long exposures in the end. And I don't want all the lights of the skyline blown out. I will shoot in RAW, which should give me some headroom to play with. But the better the starting point, the better the result. Any tips with your experience are very welcome and very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Matthias
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Hey Matthias, The day to night timelapse is a tricky one and come with experimentation...you can get lots of different looks by tweaking the settings slightly. Aperture priority is the mode I prefer to shoot in. I’ll set iso to auto and set max iso to 8000. I’ll then set my interval to about 1 second when I’m closer to the equator and about 5 seconds when further away...the longer the interval, the quicker the change from day to nightnin the finished timelapse. I’ll the turn on shoot interval priority so the shutterspeed doesn’t drop below 2 seconds. I’ll also put exposure compensation to about -0.7 ish... Now this all depends on your location it did take me a few runs to get one that worked but if you start with those settings you should be close. I hope that helps. 👍

HI Harris, They are both great cameras and will both produce some great results. I am not sure of the timelapse capabilities of the Z6ii so I would suggest the A7iii as you have both the S&Q option for quick timelapses or the interval function for better quality timelapses. If i'm shooting highway at night with 4 sec and F10, how many seconds should I put in "Shooting Interval" ? 4 or 8? I'm confused at this point because if "Shooting Interval" set for example on 1 sec and I need to get long exposure effect from cars, than I do my shutter speed 4" sec.

For that I would have interval priority off so it gives you a shorter interval than 8 seconds and long enough to clear the buffer for a 4 second interval. I hope that helps. 👍

@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron, I’m glad the video helped. The ae tracking sensitivity only works in the automatic modes, so if you shoot in aperture priority, shutter priority, P mode or auto iso, then it will play a part in how your camera exposes the shot. In manual mode, you take control of everything. 👍

Hi Ronald, Thanks dude. Did you have the sun in your shot? Did you get flickering or steps? What lens where you using?

No the sun went behind the mountains quick enough and the the middle was soon very dark. Also I could see that in shutter priority mode, the aperture stay constant during the whole time lapse
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
So what happened to the exposure? Did it get really dark? Did it change abruptly? ...and what lens were you using?
@ronaldzuidinga37555 жыл бұрын
Mike Smith so basically nothing changes. I put it a certain priority mode and the camera checks the exposure for the first shot. But as the light situation changes the camera seems the stick to what it first detected. So when the sun goes down, and everything gets darker, the camera will not adjust its settings to expose correctly. I am using a Zeiss 24-70 f4 lens. Thanks for your help dude!

That is really strange...I'm not sure why it would do that...it sounds like it is acting as if it would in manual mode...It might be worth contacting sony direct to see if it is an issue that has been seen before... Hi Mike, thanks again for the amazing information you provide. When using the aperture priority to timelapse the day to night, did you manually set the ISO? If so, what setting please? Thank you :)

Hi Darren, No worries, with the iso, I set it to auto and it worked surprisingly well. You just need to make sure you set your iso auto min set. Update: found your other video where you explain settings for time lapse from daytime to nighttime. never mind.

No worries, I'm glad you found the other one. I tend to shoot in manual everything when the exposure is constant...in the middle of the day, or in good daylight. @mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
With Astro timelpases you’d just set up the camera as you would for a single shot and then switch on the intervalometer. I’d have interval shoot priority off and then as long as your shutter time is longer than the interval time, it’ll just give you the smallest interval possible. That’s how I’ve been doing it recently. Day to night timelapses are slightly different...auto iso works really well, just set your max iso to about 8000 and you should be set...
@wilfm85645 жыл бұрын
Just found out that it is even better when you set AUTO ISO MIN SS to 4s, 8s or whatever you like for day to night timelapses. That way it increases the shutter speed to the defined value and then it increases the ISO.

Hey Mike, did you use a ND filter when shooting sunset ? Some birds flew over when I filmed, which made the whole video very bad,so what is the solution?=.= And if you shooting in the middle of the day, How many stops of ND filter you are using? Thx!
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I didn't use ND filters for the sunset...for the middle fo the day, it all depends on how bright it is. You need to set your shutter following the 180 degree rule so if your interval is 1 second, your shutter speed should be 1/2 second. This will then determine how much filtration you will need. THe only way to get around the birds ruining your TL is to use longer intervals and stronger ND filters...this will blur them out and if the shutter speed is long enough get rid of them altogether. I hope that helps. 👍

Great timelapse tutorial. The only thing I can't get it to mach.. How can you manually change shutter speed when you are in A (aperture mode) Any time I change aperture it changes my shutter speed. Thanks.
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Goran, In aperture priority, that's basically how it works. You change the aperture and then it calculates what the shutter speed should be. If you want to just change the shutter speed, you need to be in manual mode...or if you want to be in one of the semi automatic modes, shutter priority might be ok, but then you give up your control of the aperture to the camera. Does that make sense?
@jolebole-yt4 жыл бұрын
Mike Smith Got it. So basically if you want to follow the 180 rule, you need to be in S mode or M. Buy then you loose the Aperture priority if you are shooting day to night and vise versa time lapse. Looks like there is no “magic setting” for a time-lapse. It all depends on conditions and what you want to achieve.
