@markyblaze The addition of the defensive 3 in the key rule and re-interpretation of hand-checking made it easier for perimeter players to score and succeed. Not to make it harder. Hand-checking re-interpretation started in the 99-00 season and full re-interpretation during the 04-05 season. Defensive 3 in the key introduced during 01-02 season. Jordan's 2nd retirement after 97-98 season. Jordan 2nd comeback 01-03 seasons still managed over 20ppg while dropping multiple 40 point games.

if youve seen his moves recently, like the 2 step, dribble, spin, fake, fade away jumper. (well again something like that) that's when i realized that this dude is different. everything jordan did he tried to step it up. especially the fade away and his 3 point shooting is also amazing right now. and recently he admitted in taking moves from d-wade and CP3. that's exactly what i respect about kobe, the open mindedness drive to make his game better and better.

Thing is, clutch isn't just what you do with that last shot but the impact you had when your team was trailing or in desperate need of your leadership. That Utah 98 final game was instructive because Jordan took it to the hole, then got the ball back (which was absolutely necessary) so he could hit that GW shot. Don't forget the Flu Game which is basically one long clutch performance, let alone his 55(right?) against Phoenix. Jordan was clutch throughout a game or quarter not just in a moment

there was a suns lakers players playoff game were kobe would shoot impossible 3's in the fourth quarter to catch up. that was really sick even though they lost. i was really impressed with his will that time. i think it was the time when the suns knocked them off the finals and the spurs ended up champs.

Just a couple of thoughts. In the playoff game against the Celtics that MJ Scored 63 points, he had to go to the free throw line in Boston and make two free throws with no time on the clock to send the game into overtime. THAT is clutch. Also, I remember a game against the Knicks where he scored something like 18 straight points and the game-winner at the buzzer.

Thanks for watching Bruce. Pah said Jordan faced iso and shorter defenders in the clutch so i had to make this video. He also said that Jordan was never doubled without the ball when inbounding for a game winner. So I showed it happened.

@calabis Stu Jackson: Our objective was to allow for more offensive freedom by not allowing defenders to hand-, forearm- or body-check ball handlers. By doing so, we encouraged more dribble penetration. As players penetrated more, it produced higher quality shots for the ball handler as well as shots for teammates on passes back out to perimeter

good video.. wish you could include the footage from this previous year from kobes game winners but i understand what your saying. as a fan im gladm that kobes in the discussion of even being compared to jordan. its like what kobe said "90% of what i learned is from mj". all great players learn something from an existing great player as michael jordan learned from his great player Dr.J. So its kind of a disservice to even argue whose better or more clutch. but good video, phil jackson said

Stu Jackson: With the rule and interpretation changes, it has become more difficult for defenders to defend penetration, cover the entire floor on defensive rotations and recover to shooters. This has provided more time for shooters to ready themselves for quality shots. With more dribble penetration, ball handlers are getting more opportunities at the rim.

very good point, now with the defensive 3 sec rule, big guy can not just wait in the paint. back in the days, those big guys were all waiting jordan to come. and don't forget some other rules like the restricted area under the basket. hand checks or wtever. It is so easy to go to line now

I loved that 'foul?' note in the space jam video. Also everyone forgets that because MJ took off at midcourt and didn't touch the rim, that has to be a 3. In the movie they only count it for 2 points though. Always bugged me.

Great video. To me, the thing that separates Jordan from Kobe as the far superior player, and clutch player, is that final minute against Utah - Jordan goes to the hole for the easy layup, then makes a play on Malone on the defensive end, then sets up the GW shot, whereas Kobe would have undoubtedly tried to tie the game up with a 3 as soon as he got the chance.

"Zone defenses are [rarely used] in the NBA for a [number] of reasons. [Because] of the [defensive 3-sec rule], the NBA [does not allow] a [true] zone as post defenders are [not allowed] to just [park themselves in the paint]. Beyond that, it is [viewed] as a [gimmick] among players & coaching personnel." -- Jonathan Abrams, NBA Reporter for NY Times; "Talk to the Newsroom: NBA Reporter"; May 10, 2009

@atm23cp so you think that becasue maybe kobe will pass him on quantity of clutch shots it makes him more clutch? as a matter of fact, clutch ain't just the winning shot, they are the important shots at the end of the game, and everyone knows who;s the king at that. Another thing to mention is teh degree of dificulty in jordan's shots vs kobe's.
@calabis
@calabis 14 жыл бұрын
@wawiebeastman exactly here is what kobe goes against. NBA rules expert Rod Thorn said this after the handchecking rule was changed and the defensive 3 second rule:"It's more difficult now to guard the quick wing player who can handle the ball," Thorn said of the change. "I think it helps skilled players over someone who just has strength or toughness. What the NBA is trying to do is promote unimpeded movement for dribblers or cutters."

@KiidMamba24 So you cant say fg% has nothing to do with clutch shooting. What IF Jordan made all his game winners while they were contested, while Kobe only made half of his when he was wide open. That right there proves fg% doesnt mean nothing. It just has to be put in context.

@aaaahhhdamn22 Sorry but you're totally wrong. Late 80s and early 90s are believed to be the toughest era in the NBA history. Lack of the zone defense doesnt mean anything when you look at handchecking and 3 second rule. Today rules create more opportunities for players like Kobe or Dwayne. It is so easy nowadays to penetrate to the basket or draw the faul because of the rules. Do you think it was easy for MJ to drive to the basket when he had Mark Eaton on his way without 3 sec?

There are quite a few plays that you could have added for Jordan. In the 1st game 98 1st rd series vs the nets in OT. Jordan steals the ball and goes full court for a dunk and foul on Kendil Gill. Also there is a game vs the Sonics I believe in 87 or 88 that also went into OT where Jordan stole the ball at the end from Xavier McDaniel and did a 12 foot leaner windmill jam to seal the game.

The amount of assists isn't the only way to measure if a person is a ballhog. If you remember, Kobe came into the league out of highschool, and was limited to under 10 minutes for many games during his rookie season. It is hard for rookies who just came out of high school to automatically start making plays for others in the NBA. Assists is not a way to measure if a person is a ballhog. You have watch and study the game and not get caught up in the boxscore.

@jp3813 i mean when u think about it, kobe has already played longer than jordan has and so based on the long year he has played he's more tired then when jordan came back in his 30's,. but the fact still remains that although he might have missed the last 5clutch shots, not forget jordan has missed several gamewinners also,. so it still becomes a debatable discussion due to both of them bein great players in general, and they always been the person to take the shots for the team their own,,..

First of all Ervin Magic Johnson was pretty established during the 80s and when Jordan faced him in the finals And he and Scottie did both guard him. Jordan guarded drexler in the 92 finals who was also established. Magic was drafted in 1979-80 and Drexler was in 1983-84. I also remember the Lakers choking in the playoffs until Phil coached them. I remember the lakers not making the playoffs in 2005 when Phil wasn't there. Whereas Jordan made it with 3 different coaches before Phil.

Of course you can compare them. Kobe started playing in the NBA when Jordan still dominated the league. He wasn't in his prime anymore, but still. Their style is often very similar due to the fact that Kobe molded his game after Jordan's. He copied not only his moves, but his mimics and gestures as well and even asked Jordan about the correct stance for his fadeaway.

@mrdogyman123 u might want to take note of why kobe has more defence in the clutch. Simple, because he doesnt pass the ball in the clutch. the reason why jordan faces less, is because every team knew that if they tried to overcommit on jordan he is going pass it to someone to make the shot.

Kenny, do you remember basketball before '98? There were a shit load of players Jordan had to compete with. David Robinson, Ewing, Olajuwan, Gary Payton, Grant Hill, Shaq, Charles Barkley, Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning, Stockton who is one of the best defensive players ever, Malone, Shawn Kemp, the list goes on and on. I would wager that most if not all of these players are better than most, if not all players now. This was back in the hey day of basketball. Defenses are weaker, less stars.
