With that rtx2070 that he has, if he doesn't swap it soon, for something more powerful, cpu upgrade will almost make no change at all. Only benefits vs the old ryzen 3600 will be noticed, on really cpu heavy titles, and that would be 1% and 0.1% lows mainly. Other than that, as far as the average fps goes, basically the same, not even 10% max diff.

Hi Mike, great vid! I recently went from a Ryzen 5600 to a Ryzen 5700x3D and V-cache is great for gaming but I have a Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2 instead of your B450, but was worth the upgrade still a bit of a jump :) I wanted to add that as long as you run both memory sticks with the XMP profile (at 3200Mhz) they will both run without any issues as both sets are running at the same latency. If anyone on the comments are using all 4 Ram slots in their motherboard (2 x 2 set configuration) if for example the RAM sticks mike has used, and don't have XMP enabled you can possibly get stability issues as the latency determines how often the clock cycle gets refreshed from the RAM, if you have a mismatch it could cause programs to crash or other errors, so make sure XMP is already enabled in general. If for some crazy reason your RAM sticks don't have XMP, You will have to manually match the slowest set of RAM sticks in the machine. RAM timings can always be set to a slower rate, but if you were to match RAM to another faster set of sticks your essentially telling the RAM to repeat cycles more quickly than it is used to, and this can cause crashses too, so better to go the other way and match the RAM at the slowest speed (if you have 2 x 2 different sets and no XMP). You can also lower the temps of of the 5700x3D as it does get hot, There is a good bit of software where you can offset the voltage slightly by -0.30 to each core called PBO2 Tuner, There are several useful videos on this but you will have to add it to Windows Scheduled tasks so it applies every time you boot your PC.

I just did a very similar upgrade last month on a system I built for a friend a few years ago. Old specs: CPU - Ryzen 5 3600 Cooler - Hyper 212 Black Edition Motherboard - MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX II ATX AM4 Hard Drive - Crucial P1 1 TB M.2 NVME RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory Video Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER SC ULTRA 6 GB New specs: CPU - Ryzen 7 5700X3D Cooler - Thermalright Phantom Spirit Black Motherboard - No change Hard Drive - Crucial P3 4 TB M.2 NVME Ram - Added another 16 GB kit of the same RAM taking it to 32 GB so now its (4 x 8 GB) Video Card - ASRock Challenger Pro OC Radeon RX 6750 XT 12 GB Thankfully, I got the correct BIOS update from MSI's website the first time so there were no hangups there. The update did put all the BIOS settings back to default, so I had to re-enable XMP and re-enter the custom CPU and Case fan curves in BIOS, but that was to be expected. I probably didn't need to upgrade the cooler, but it was an easy swap since I had to remove it to change the CPU anyway. Also the 3600 only draws 65W while the 5700X3D draws 105W so better safe than sorry, especially since it was a relatively cheap upgrade to the cooling solution. Next, I migrated her OS from the 1TB M.2 drive to a new 4TB M.2 drive using the OS Migration tool in DiskGenius. It worked flawlessly and greatly increased the storage space. So now there's no more uninstalling an old game just to install a new one because of limited space. Lastly, the GPU upgrade (got it for $269 in July on sale about 2 months before supplies ran out) should give this system a few more years of life playing new AAA games at max settings on 1080p. This card will even play those games at 1440p at high settings so if she upgrades her monitor, no other hardware changes will be needed. Another potential pitfall to watch out for is making sure to use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to uninstall your old GPU drivers when changing from one brand to another. In this case, I went from nVidia to AMD, but it works either way. This helps ensure that no residual driver files remain on your system potentially causing conflict with your new card's drivers.

Very interesting to watch the process of upgrading including honesty of error! Curiously the cpuz showed the B450 as PCIE Gen4 as I thought they were all Gen3 mbs. I know the RTX2000s were gen3 as shown in cpuz. As for the DDR4 I agree with policy of 2x sticks rather than 4 but never thought identical sticks would have diff memory suppliers & affect xmp! Thanks for doing this very informative video. I came to similar conclusions to you when I did the same thing a year ago to get more gaming speed. I have the same motherboard. I swapped out my 3900XT for the 5800x3D and pretty much doubled the FPS in the world of warcraft, especially in main cities. I did run into problems when I tried to add 2 more memory chips... very unstable once XMP was enabled, even though the RAM was rated to 3200Mhz. I was told on the mobo forum that this board isn't overly happy about having all 4 slots occupied and running at 3200Mhz, even if it was the same memory chip in all 4 slots. I ended up giving all 4 sticks of 8GB to the friend who did the CPU upgrade for me and just had 2 16GB sticks instead to get to the 32GB total. This has been completely stable for the last year, and passed all the memory stress tests I ran after installation. The icing on the cake was that the bios on the motherboard allows undervolting the 5800x3D to run it a bit cooler. I have a huge Noctua D15s (I think) air cooler on it. Did have an AIO initially, but it clogged up and stopped. Known problem with that AIO model.

Yea my experience is the same mixing memory. Only work around I have found is to manually try speeds with the "Try It" type functions on the motherboard. You may get 3000 with low timings or 3200 with looser timings. The Samsung pair did look to have the lower timings so maybe try profile 2. Good news is that the 3D cache does offset the slower ram somewhat. And now he will need a GPU upgrade to take advantage of that faster CPU :) I'm still running a 5800x3d with a 4090 and it does great (monitor limited to 120Hz at 4k so even if I could push more fps it would not show)

This is the upgrade path using the sam e specs im considering however I already have the ram part done @32GB *Note majority if not all motherboards should have an approved list of ram that has been tested to run on the particular motherboard. While other ram "may work" as it may just not have been tested with that motherboard for compatibility. Its highly advisable to use the ram that has been listed as tested and working fine with that motherboard, especially if you're ordering online as many stores, including physical ones, will not refund or swap to something that is compatible. Its not their fault you made a mistake, got what you asked for and its fully functional just no compatible. As pointed out its also critical to avoid issues that you don't just get the same brand and speed by the same memory chips type on that memory. The ram chips fluctuate in price over time and various brands will go with what is cheapest at the time but brand it the same. If you are unable to get the same brand and the same ram chip types on a ram, stick for upgrades to your existing ram, then find another brand with that same ram brand on its Hynix or Samsung for example and Ensure that they have the same memory timings. As while the new ram is not guaranteed to work, as it will work as it hasn't been tested as compatible and on the manufacturer's approved ram listings, it will reduce the potential for issues. This will give you the best outcomes % chance, if you're unable to source identical ram, to add to your existing ram.

After doing this would you recommend just buying 2 x 16gb and just replacing the ram altogether? I too upgraded to this CPU on a b450 Tomahawk Max. Just need a new GPU. From what I've seen there isn't minimal to gain from a b550 having newer gen pcie and m.2.
@mikesunboxing2 күн бұрын
yes replace the RAM it is much easier to get the full speed and also stability from using just 2 ram sticks. and the performance drop is about 0-5% depending on the game and the GPU, but keep in mind 5% can sometimes be the difference between to tiers of GPU so it sounds like not a lot i reality but in terms of the cost of the next gpu up the stack, that could almost be the same as the price of a new motherboard

Question Mike: I'm on a 5700g still with 4070 gfx, 32gb Ram on the MSI b550 pro vdh WiFi mobo. Would I see much of an improvement in 1440p gaming with a 5700X3D CPU?.. Probably single core performance would go down but would the extra cache + PCIe 4.0 from PCIe 3.0 produce that much gain in gaming performance?
@mikesunboxing9 күн бұрын
that is a tough one, as the cpu speed itself is quite close, in games the extra PCIe lanes and being 4.0 rather than 3.0 will help. You should be able to sell the 5700g for good money and almost cover the cost of the 5700x3d so if you are going down that route it would make a lot of sense. If you cant get a good price for the 5700g then maybe not
@MobiusDude9 күн бұрын
Thanks Mike... I don't really want to sell the 5700g as eventually I'll upgrade to a newer platform & have a complete mobo CPU with gfx system as a 2nd PC. I just wasn't sure if I would see a worthwhile upgrade from 5700g to 5700X3D as I don't plan on upgrading any time soon. Hope the 5700g will keep my 4070 fps high enough till then. So far so good.

You should have moved the old sticks to the same channel. Mixing the RAM in the same channel could cause problems.

Great video Mike, I am considering a similar update, I have a 3700X. But I am trying to resolve my DRAM issues first. It runs at 2133 and no matter what I have tried the XMP profile will NOT stick. If I set it in the BIOS it runs as 3200 great. But with 2 exceptions. BG3 crashes at that higher speed, and upon restarting the next day the memory sets back to 2133. Could it be a CMOS battery issue, or just dodgy RAM? Maybe someone can offer a suggestion. Reddit was unhelpful.
