Sometimes it's a matter of people being cheap.. My work has had a construction company and a moving company decide our dumpsters were free to use and save them money getting their own and would fill up our recycling dumpster with trash. Pissed us off to high hell because then we couldn't even use it for it's purpose. (I've even had to drag a room's worth of piss and shit on carpeting out of it before)

God bless you brother. I had to resort to dumpster diving after a heart attack left me unemployed and broke. I'm a tinsmith/roofer and have always scraped metal. It used to be relatively easy to get a decent days pay. Now, with the price of aluminum and copper and even ferrous stuff, it's highly competitive. You gotta get up early or like you, after the day shift leaves. You have to be agile to work dumpsters and it's a nasty job. But sometimes you hit the jackpot. I once found a whole pallet of 4 lb. bags of sugar. It had been left outside and gotten hard. It's simple to soften up, freeze it. Cha-ching. Anyway, good luck.
